THANK YOU SO MUCH! I read the manual twice and box instructions twice and panicked bc my new filter didn’t have an up arrow. Your explanation and leaf test were just what I needed!!
My friend, thank you for clarifying this so nicely for a non-mechanic like me!!! I Honestly, I was confused but I'm now a smarter non-mechanic just because of you. I'm sure I'm not the only one who can now make sense about "who's up and who's down" on this silly cabin filter thingamajig. Halleluyah!
A useful vid. My RAV4 is brand spanking with 3 years servicing thrown in so it'll be a while until I need to look into this... the vid I am waiting for (although I note that your RAV4 already has one) is how to install a 3rd party powered rear tailgate. In my case, I couldn't justify the extra $6k to purchase the higher model with that feature.
Very useful video, thanks! From experience, if I see a filter in this state, I also wipe the plastic holder, since it's likely to have some dust on it. Hoppe it helps.
It got so confusing for me after going through various youtube videos and online forum. Eventually in the end, I decided to just put it in the "Airflow ⬇️."
Perfect description but I have a question if you could help me. there's an other type of filter ontop of that plastic filter rack, it's kind decomposed and comes in pieces down , I cannot find it a spare in the market
Great video! I bought an AC Delco CF3314. Seems like it needs to be turned 90 degrees in order to fit. So, the filters folds will be at a 90 degree difference from the OEM filter. Can you see any issue with that?
The orientation should not be a problem. Make sure to follow the airflow recommendation on the filter. If the airflow is not observed, the air filter efficiency will be reduced.
I replaced my cabin air filter today. There was pieces of carbon pieces when I inserted the new filter inside. I shaked the filter off to get remaining pieces off will it cause issues with ac system ?
If your cabin air filter does not have arrows or air flow direction most likely it is a basic filter and can be installed either way. The ones with different media layers require you to install it a certain way: Why You Should Not Install Cabin Air Filter Upside Down? - th-cam.com/video/Io-9OAEOEv8/w-d-xo.html.
The general rule is 15K to 30K miles. It depends on the environment you drive in, quality of the air filter, etc. I would visually check it at least once every year. If you have any issues with the air flow, odours or excessive dust in the vehicle, it is definitely time to replace it.
Normally, the carbon side should be on the bottom of the cabin air filter. You should follow the air flow arrows on the filter. They should point down. Here is another video explaining the process: Why You Should Not Install Cabin Air Filter Upside Down? - th-cam.com/video/Io-9OAEOEv8/w-d-xo.html.
If you put the air filter in wrong, it will clog up sooner and won't provide proper filtration. Cabin air filters consist of different layers filtering different size particles. The top layers catch larger particles and bottom ones catch smaller ones. If you install it upside down, it will clog up much faster.

Good job explaining air flow direction versus UP arrow indicator. The leaf was a nice touch.
100% correct , leave it to the automotive engineers to label everything up when air flow is down!!
You're saving a lot of people showing this trick
best explanation in TH-cam about air filters replacement
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I read the manual twice and box instructions twice and panicked bc my new filter didn’t have an up arrow. Your explanation and leaf test were just what I needed!!
Thanks for this tutorial! It helped me figure out the most logical thing-- that the leaf and dirt would be on the in-flow side of the filter :)
Thanks for your very thorough explanation. I watched 2 videos before and couldn’t understand how to change the filter until I watched your video.
one of the best, if not the best instructional video On this topic. Thank you!!
Good video. And most (maybe all) cabin filters flow top to bottom to collect debris like dried leaves that enter through the intake.
@Insignificant Speck Of Dust Toyota air filter = TOP arrow faces up. Other brand FLOW arrow faces down
Super helpful! I’m glad you mentioned the difference with the after market. I was using a new Bosch and was confused. Thanks!
Best explanation in TH-cam about cabin air filter replacement.
Thank you for your help.
Outstanding! You explain things extremely well!
Excellent video. I came upon this one because others were unclear. Your video has cleared up all confusion, thank you.
Thank you so much. The best explanation ever!
You are a life saver - I was going nuts when I pulled out my Lexus Cabin air Filter lol
Great explanation- I replaced the filter in my Corolla in about 2 min! Thanks for this video!

Thank you for the airflow example and demonstration helped out lot 🙏
Like I’ve said… years later these videos will definitely gain traction :)
Awesome ,, recently ran into this issue with an after market filter. Thank you
The Toyota Dealership wants to charge me $80 USD to replace the cabin air filter. Lol
Lmao😂. Takes 2 minutes
That’s not too bad
You always have the answers I need for my Rav. Thanks again!!!👍🏻👊🏻
Well, I have been installing them in my car for the last 10 years upside down!
Great videos! Such good quality instruction!
Very useful video, thanks! From experience, if I see a filter in this state, I also wipe the plastic holder, since it's likely to have some dust on it. Hoppe it helps.
Very clever - thank you so much for sharing. I had the same question and did not think of using a leaf to figure it out =- God Bless!
Great video! Very helpful to understand the airflow!
Thank you for the detailed explanation and excellent video instruction. 👍
Muchas gracias con este video y con tu ayuda por primera vez te envié el filtro yo sola. Gracias
Thank you for this excellent explanation.
It got so confusing for me after going through various youtube videos and online forum.
Eventually in the end, I decided to just put it in the "Airflow ⬇️."

Does this filter fit the 2023 RAV4 Hybrid XLE models? Thanks for the excellent video.
Thank you for your feedback! Yes, it does fit the 2023 RAV4 Hybrid XLE.
Thank you very much!

Hi, is it the same as hybrid version?
Yes, in fact this is the hybrid in the video.
I replaced my cabin air filter today. There was pieces of carbon pieces when I inserted the new filter inside. I shaked the filter off to get remaining pieces off will it cause issues with ac system ?
I bought a Bosch filter and the manual says the arrow of the filter should show towards the airflow not with the airflow...
Hey my air filter doesn’t have an airflow arrow, how do I make sure I inserted it correctly
@@MorozovAutomotive Thanks man, I think you’re right, it’s a cheap one I bought
How often is the change recommended?
The general rule is 15K to 30K miles. It depends on the environment you drive in, quality of the air filter, etc. I would visually check it at least once every year. If you have any issues with the air flow, odours or excessive dust in the vehicle, it is definitely time to replace it.
Great video. Thank you for sharing!!
@@MorozovAutomotive thanks for tip!
Nice to see you got it right. Too bad it's made in China but thumbs up anyway. 👍
@@MorozovAutomotive thank you so much! Now I know where the bad smells comes sometimes even with the car clean! Was driving me crazy!
Carbon side up or down??( air flow is from top to bottom)
Normally, the carbon side should be on the bottom of the cabin air filter. You should follow the air flow arrows on the filter. They should point down. Here is another video explaining the process: Why You Should Not Install Cabin Air Filter Upside Down? - th-cam.com/video/Io-9OAEOEv8/w-d-xo.html.
I cleaned the filter myself in fairy water. car mileage 12700km, not miles.
What if the aftermarket filter I bought just has an arrow? It doesn’t say UP or Airflow
If it is an aftermarket air filter, most likely the arrow means the air flow.
What will happen if i put it wrong?
If you put the air filter in wrong, it will clog up sooner and won't provide proper filtration. Cabin air filters consist of different layers filtering different size particles. The top layers catch larger particles and bottom ones catch smaller ones. If you install it upside down, it will clog up much faster.
Is it normal to hear a whistling after changing it? I just did this in mine and it’s whistling
No, there should not be any whistling noises. You need to check if the air filter and the housing were properly installed.
what happens if you spray the filter with perfume or put some good smelly thing in the drawer with the filter? Has anyone tried it?
i'm still confused :o(
Great vid 👍
Thanks
