I met Roberta at the Aspen airport in 1990, and when I told her I loved her, her singing, her songs, and especially this one, she gave me a big smack on the lips ! My heart still races at the memory.

@randyisfrank1. I GATHER THAT GESTURE WITH YOU "FROM HER",OF HER"....FROM Roberta Flack. She was SOOO SOFT SPOKEN. EVEN HER LOUD OR RAISED VOCALS HAD A "SOFT, CASCADING EFFECT"! A BEAUTIFUL WATERFALL OF MELODIC, TEMPERATE BEAUTY AND QUIET BUT FORCEFUL PURPOSE. LIKE A VIOLENT, HARSH, BITTER, GUSTY WINTER STORM IN A BARREN REGION OF THE WORLD......THAT...."SERVES PURPOSE" FOR SO MUCH "LIFE" THAT MUST....WILL BE PRESERVED FOR TODAY, NECESSARY FOR TODAY. TOMORROW AND OF COURSE........ALL OF OUR UNITED "FUTURE".🤔🤗😳

WOW! On the lips too? As Bruno Mars wrote in a song, "Give me a memory I can use"...you got a huge one there, friend. Envy.

One of the greatest interpreters of song in our time. Saw her at a fundraiser for Harlem Hospital at Riverside Church in 1977 where she opened with a cover on Melba Moore's hit "I am his Lady" and Roberta's cover was to this day the most perfectly rendered song I have ever heard. Her musicians looked almost like a random assortment of folks when they preceded her to the alter in the sanctuary of the chapel but when they picked up their instruments and she sat at the piano and sang that first lyric, she had us all for the rest of the evening. When she finished that first song, there was a moment of silence as if none of us could believe that we had just shared such an exquisite moment as her FIRST SONG and then the applause thundered so loud that they shook the stained glass!
She never recorded the song and in many ways it made her performance of it even more special. It always seemed to be a mark of the greats that they could perform a song that someone else made popular and do it so much better that you cannot go back and listen to the other singer's version. What a brilliant talent this woman is.

And it also shows just how much Ms. Flack admires those artists herself; and how much their music touched her heart, that she would cover their songs. ❤️💫✨

This is the most beautiful song and sadly after 43 years nothing has changed ! I played this endlessly in 1972 and thank you for sharing this on TH-cam. I wish someone would start a campaign to bring this song back as it is even more than relevant today! Beautiful haunting song and their are no words for Roberta's voice. I was lucky to see her in concert in the 70's and she was mesmerizing. No one sings like Roberta!

I wore out my share of pieces of vinyl back in the day, too. I love any and everything by Roberta and Phoebe Snow, but "Trade Winds" is one of my favorites. You are correct about this song being timeless...it should be used as an anthem or something. I think the youth of today could learn a thing or two from this song. I've met Roberta several times and she is a lovely, genuine songbird. Thank you for sharing this fantastic song.

I remember when I was about 12 years old when I heard "Patches" by Clarence Carter for the first time, the song hit my little pea brain so powerfully that I cried. 41 years later, this song did the same to me( I have a bigger brain now though). No other song has ever had such an effect on me. The funny thing is I've heard this song before, by Lou Rawls and Randy Crawford, but Ms. Flack's rendition just does something to me. Thank you Mr Smith for posting this version. Thank you, Ms. Flack, for crooning a timeless ballad. I love you, God bless you eternally.

After all these years, it seems that people still aren't listening. This song along with a few others, explains in detail the troubles that face our youth. We can teach our babies how to "TWERK" (whatever the hell that stands for), they can repeat verbatim "Tom Ford" but have no idea nor an ear for the conscious truth told in this song. How sad.

    Marvin Gaye's What's Goin' On

with her amazing lyrics & amazing vocals.
THIS song & THIS version of THIS song NEEDS to be put into a prominent movie soundtrack that is directed at today's youth...something similiar to
    The Freedom Writer's...
to put it onto the music charts & into

I came here from Randy Crawford’a beautiful cover from 1981, all those years I didn’t know it was a Roberta Flack original, until about 5 years ago. As far as the lyrics go, some things change, but these words are truer and unfortunate the last decade then even back then in the 70’s and 80’s. All of our traditions that our parents and grandparents us are blowing out with the tradewinds. The present young generation has no clue what’s right and wrong these days.

First heard the song done by another angel, Randy Crawford, produced by Ralph, and I think they credit Ralph and Bill Salter in that album. I actually thought it was her song. By the way, play that flute beautiful lady. I own two of your albums, here in Swaziland, Southern Africa. It's nice to here from another artist you like.

@@nhlekoclement3389 HEY ! You guys in Swaziland and southern Africa rock . I first heard it sung by LOU RAWLS but I thought it was a cover version of Roberta Flack's. Harold Gibson is bang on.

My Pops would say we are caught in the Tradewinds of our Times back in the mid 70?s. I didn't understand back then. But I see it now at the end of 2021. What a year Great song, penned by percussionist Ralph McDonald.
