I met Roberta in the late 60's when she was playing upstairs at Mr. Henry's in D.C. We sat at long tables on benches and it was very intimate. Before singing each song, she would sit quietly at the piano until the room quieted. It was magic. I went to a party thrown by Robert Shirley (the manager at Mr. Henry's) that Roberta attended and we sat and talked. She said that a young lady had come to Mr. Henry's and heard her sing and went right back to her father, who was a record producer, and told him he had to sign her right away and she had just signed. Almost everything she sang at the club has been recorded but I will always remember sitting in that small room at the club, listening to her pure voice during that magical time.

Saw Roberta Flack with Donny Hathaway when I was just a girl in Detroit at the beautiful Fischer Theatre. She was so great I rose to my feet ! I was so young my parents took me after I begged my father. GOD it was magic ! ! I will never forget it. So many greats were there. Joe Williams, Cannonball & Nat Adderley Jr., Les McCan. Parents... try to leave your children with beautiful memories.

Roberta Flack is such an amazing talent. Cohen's 'Suzanne' is one of my favorite recordings by Ms. Flack. I listen to it often. My favorite song by her is 'The First Time..." and I believe Ms. Flack's rendition is one of the most beautiful love songs ever recorded. She does not fit into one kind of genre of music: she isn't pop, adult contemporary, r&b, soul, jazz...but she is all of these. I love that. I have so much love and respect for her.

A lady of class!! Saw her perform in the summer of 1975 at red rocks amphitheater near Denver. She captivated us!!! We were like putty in her hands. Her soothing and lush voice just filled that place with so much love and serenity!!! It was a night I will always cherish.
I was at that concert too…Red Rocks is a very special place.

No one brings this song to LIFE quite like Roberta Flack. Sadly, the songwriter has left the building. There are but a handful of scribes who carved these sad-lovely ideas of being a writer into my psyche. Leonard Cohen was one of them. T'is true, I hardly knew ye. In 2020, Roberta Flack won the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. She did survive a stroke in 2018. The American songstress left the stage, but not the building. :)

I have always loved and admired Roberta Flack for her singing, piano and heart. Regarding Leonard Cohen's song about Suzanne Verdal... Leoanard Cohen as I understand it wrote this song about a deeply spiritual woman who held the mirror of unconditional love to all including him. Suzanne Verdal was the opposite of self-obsessed. She is a woman who holds the mirror of unconditional love available to all, showing Leonard and others this is existent for all. Regarding lack of attention to others in pain, she was the one in pain being ignored. While this song inspired by her exquisite being and consistent generosity was making others famous and lucrative, she was living homeless in a truck for six years with a broken back. A very accomplished dancer full of heart and soul, her broken back truncated her career at a young adult age. She never gives up hope and contiunes to work to heal the back for decades, remains a deeply loving person. It was she who continued to beam love but was not helped by others benefiting from a song about her soul. Because of her this song has touched a multitude of millions.

Wow, this live version is gorgeous! I prefer it over the studio version that is available .... The musicians are adding a very deep funky element here, and Roberta sounds like she is really feeling it! I wish they would make this available as a recording.
