To accurately measure your pressure drop over the cooler, just put two pressure gages in, one before the cooler and one after. Subtract the two, and there is your drop. Pressure is flow dependant, and it is best to do on the actual motor, so that's consistent. My feeling is that it has plenty of flow. An automotive cooling system runs around 1 bar of waterpressure (i think you could be running 0.5 bar at best). Water is way more viscous than air. Again, I love the work!
Bro, you’re so damn smart! I really appreciate this advice. I’ll do the pressure drop test in one of the upcoming videos as it’ll be super interesting.
You won’t get enough boost to ACTUALLY use that intercooler. Turbos work on pressure ratio’s (at the inlet) as a function of engine flow rate (corrected for flow rate for ATMOSPHERIC pressure). You won’t get enough revs out of a 125 with a good volumetric efficiency at the revs you’d be running anyways to get any sort of meaningful boost (even with that tiny turbo) BUT if you compound turbo it and you factor the pressure ratio’s together… so 4psi of boost (1.27 pressure ratio) increases to 9psi of boost (1.27x1.27=1.62 pressure ratio) which cause a ‘chain’ type reaction in the system to actually force more flow rate and then force more boost. You’ll see probably 15+ pounds of boost with a compound on that motor and with the fuel injection would run great and then you’d actually be using the intercooler.
OMG! That is siiiiiick! Love this build coming from a humble 49cc to a full blown turbocharged, EFI 125cc death shifter go kart love it mate! Can’t wait for the end results of this bad boy.
@@itsmikelake your are so welcome bro. I can tell that you can’t wait for the end results either. Have you thought of installing a waste gate/ dump valve on it? That would be sick as f.
Awesome work Mike!!!! Love to see your talent and ingenuity on such a killer project. That wheel and hub fit nicely in my Infiniti g20t btw! Thank you again for hooking me up with such a killer piece
Keep it coming killing it very high standard 🫡 your learning lots of new skills as you build not bad for cool lil turbo quad next project needs to be something mini too 😬🏴
Haha , i have an 200cc motorcycle in storage almost for almost 10 years. I wonder if it will start and slap a turbo on it 😂 #turbolife 🎉 Love the build!
Wow nice to see you reading the comments and responding to the plenum I think your right the intercooler should help do the same process and store boost so fair play bro I love it ❤don't forget about your vacuum pipe for wastegate
I was thinking about the flow and pressure drop before you mentioned it... and I actually think, that because of the time it takes for the pressure wave to reach the inlet after it's creator has left the exhaust port (the reason there needs to be a chamber to store boost rather than send it backwards like a two stroke exhaust does) the higher pressure on the hot side may stop bleedback from the cold side. the pressure difference may just work to your advantage. I'm also thinking that 2 boost gauges (one on either side of the intercooler) for testing purposes would be interesting, But yes the standard is pretty damn good. It's looking awesome!
The scale of the intercooler is hilarious! It looks so fricken cool though, the pie cuts are beautiful. Way too cool Mike! Really gave this thing a birthday. Excited to see it in action. Also, I do agree the intercooler would do similar things as a plenum. Adding volume. Smart man.
Really enjoying this series so far! Maybe you should try running nitromethane in the car? It will give it an extra bit of kick. Must richen the mixture though.
Hey I built one close to yours last year, very fun build! Pro tip-find a power wheels body of your choice I.e: mustang, bmw, truck, military tank. Hollow out, mount over body, and slam it. Looks fantastic!
Put a cap, with an air line on one side of the intercooler. Get a baseline of what the inlet pressure is. Put an airflow meter on the exit side. Calculate the difference.
You could measure the pressure drop by static pressure. Fieldpeace makes a static pressure meter. You’ll have to rig up something like a leaf blower. Connect the leaf blower to one side of the intercooler and you’ll have to put one hose on one side other hose on the other side and measure the static pressure. or something.
@@itsmikelake I want to eventually get into welding it's just abit harder as I'm off grid and have to use a generator for a welder but I'm slowly doing some videos very amateur stuff but it's a start :)
Make sure u think about crashing the thing while building. Yes the front mount looks tough as on the from but it’s now in kill zone if u send it into a street sign😂😂 Maybe a small “bash bar” underneath the cooler poking out slightly so there is something to hit just in case. Love the video man. Here within 15min😂👌✌🏻
Not sure why automotive youtubers doesn’t do things like this more often. Its a portion of what a car build would cost and it brings curiosity out of potential subscribers. It only attracts viewers.
A great tip that's gonna save you so much head ache and disappointment add a plenum if 125cc shoot for 500cc or a bit more. It won't make much without it and it's gonna be hard to tune. I have a 155cc compound bike that's over 100hp on ridiculous boost it's been a idk how long r&d project of mine and pre plenum we struggled to get any meaningful power. Not to suggest your gonna get over 50hp with one turbo 😂 on a 125cc but you can get pretty close. I prefer carbies but to each their own just when making a new intake you can plum the plenum either between the tb or after but tuning will be easiest engine plenum tb and runner length matters alot they make boost up top as singles and have back pressure issues quick so make that runner longer. Were a bit bigger but saw a solid 20% gain in the usable powerband by making the runner about 10in longer. This is on a xr based engine but similar enough. You can also use the world's fastest postie bike as a great reference I copied a lot myself and when I didn't listen I ended up at the same conclusion eventually like the turbine housings being way too small. FYI they got a semi reliable 60whp on 45psi of boost on a bone stock motor so they can take more than one stage of compressor can give. Looks like your going the vz21 route id suggest a vz45 as the exduser is bigger on the compressor wheel and spends less time in surge along with a bigger turbine wheel so the back pressure is reasonable. Back in our single turbo days we tried everything we could get and the vz45 was best by miles and didn't complain too hard making 30psi although the Chinese so sell billet wheels for them I was able to message seller and get a few custom ones with the absolute limit on exduser size and an extra blade to help the efficiency at higher pr and move that surge line down further. Keep in mind the vz21 wants to see that engine make 30hp before it's out of surge and the vz45 only needs to see the flow of 20hp the custom ones we have would get happy around 20hp too but we were able to lean on them all the way to 50+psi although they don't live long after 40psi as they have a 270° thrust bearing. Carbies make the mixture cooler and you can chill your fuel with dry ice and well we don't need an intercooler although the latest version does have two and it certainly helped us get over the 100hp mark. Oil pressure is an issue although if weight isn't a huge concern an electric pump would be best then you could have a totally independent oil tank just for the turbo.
All I have to say is to get some grommets on that rad. Bc the mounts like that will be destroyed. You’ll be in a world of trouble. Bc it’s going to vibrate a lot. All that vibration is going to find its way down to them mounts and break off
@@itsmikelake yea. Theory the motor shouldn’t have move like a normal vehicle. No dampners. But the rubber on the charge pipe should dampen it some. But the air still would possibly vibrate the cooler. Hopefully u didn’t get too far into the cooler building 😂
On the hot side you should have made a full loop with the pipe. It would look SICK AND GIVE YOU MORE LENGTH AND VOLUME annnndd would look like you have like a 2nd turbo sorta if you can picture it you know what I mean
you need to cut them ugly triangle bars off the front and make two brackets and get two minie quad bike shocks and put them on the front like coilovers that would look nuts with the intercooler and would give it more of a drift kart / drift car look
