I mow my tall fescue at 3" weekly, except for hot summer, then I let it go to 3.5". I water frequently during the hot periods. My lawn looks great.

I like to mow my tall fescue at 4 or 4.5 inches. I like the dark green Stripes on my lawn. Plus it’s stripe better when it’s tall .

Thanks for the great advice when I first watched this video 3 years ago, I found it again when looking up how to best care for Tall Fescue.
I planted Tall Fescue from seed in clay soil on my house in Southern California. I used to mow it at 2.5" and noticed it struggled really bad during our 105+ degree Summers. Last year I raised my mower to 3.5" - 4" and even with less watering, it has thrived so we'll and has kept most weeds out. Few bald spots here and there due to gophers poking through after the Winter. We get snow in the winter and 105+ degree Summers, it has withstood both without issues.

I have a patch of GCI in the backyard I dormant seeded. Going to do a Reno in the fall and just let the Bermuda take over this summer. But from scalping it the last few mows it really looks awesome that low. Probably wont survive the heat at 1" but pretty nice looking.

My mower top setting is 3.5” for my TTTF. Part of my lawn is in direct sun for 11-13 hours. The grass looks great although I would love a mower where I can mow 4” during the hot summer. Certain areas need 2” of water per week compared to 1-1.25” of water for other parts of the lawn. Constant updates to irrigation (depending on the weather) help keep it strong and thriving.

Holy cow, if I waited 12 days between mows I'd need a windrower and a bailer. LOL....I have part KBG and TTTF in the area I mow.( I mow my next door neighbor) I tried 4" and the KBG layed down and got diseased in spots. Rabbits played a part in some areas. I finally took my rake and stood it up and it was over 6". So I've decided to compromise at 3.5"

I'm in central Virginia. I use contractor's mix so my height varies. I do 4" in most places. If I get a ridge, I'll drop it a little to blend it. I try to fill in dips with topsoil to keep my grass even. I noticed with riding mowers, overtime you'll get a mild gulley where you follow fences & walls. It's usually 40" or so caused from the right wheel. You either need to switch up riders, or edge with a push mower. 🐀🐾

I'm in the UK and one very popular turf company's main product consists of a ryegrass/fescue blend. I like mowing it at 30mm but my father insists its too short. I love it. He prefers the 45mm setting.

I went down to 2 slowly, the grass didn't look to good, I could see a lot of thatch so started reel mowing @ 2.5 it's starting to look nice, I'll go back up to 3.5 late spring and summer, I'm in California.

I tilled and laid down new lawn (fescue). Obviously its coming in on the thin side. The grass is falling over since its not dense enough yet for the grass to help hold itself up. Should I cut lower?

The problem I have with 4” is that I get a lot of fungus underneath because my grass lays down a lot. I mow it a bit shorter due to having a mixture of T3F and KBG at 3.5”. If that doesn’t help I will drop to 3” and see if that helps (fall 2021)

I am mowing tall fascue at 2”. I don’t think it is all fescue I believe there is other mixes of grass mixed in. I use a 55” zero turn mower and mulch my clippings. I use a big mower because I have a lot of grass. 4 acres probably of grass. I believe I can get away with it because of the frequency of mow. I mow every 3 days if not more sometimes and I have irrigation. I want to try mowing it even lower and have not got there yet. So much rain this spring I can’t keep up. Going to try PGR this year.

You can mow TTF at 1” even lower! A real mower is a must to mow at 1” and below. Being consistent is the key. You’ll train the grass.
    Use growth regulators.

I have been mowing at 4.25" for a long time and now I have fesuce that has fallen over and still growing. It has caused dead spots in the grass. I am assuming I need to mow lower? I'm really hating this fescue at this point.

    • @sarahmartinux

4.25 is way to high for fescue. 3.5"-4" for summer. 3" for spring and fall

I put down tall Fescue and my seedlings are about 2 1/2 inches so far. Do I wait til it gets to 4 inches before mowing. I’m scared of ripping out my new seedlings as not all are growing at the same rate. I heard to mow shorter in order to promote deeper roots. I’m in South Kansas

how does one keep the tall fescue from rotting? The grass mats down all over, and stays down . turning into alot of rot down below. The lawn looks ugly and uneven with this grass. The typical mower wheel pushes it down as well causing a dead rut. Is there a top brand mower that has suction to lift the matted grass to cut it at the same height throughout the lawn? This grass is a nightmare, very temperamental

Make sure the grass is dry and your blades are sharp. Cut in late evenings. Dew on grass looks like a cow pooped in your yard. That also can clog your mower up. Make sure your deck is clean.
