Spurbus + Strassenbahn Mannheim

  • Apart from Essen the only other German city to have used the kerb guided O-Bahn system was Mannheim, where buses shared a pre-existing surface light rail private right of way. Installed in April 1992 this 800 metre installation helped city-bound vehicles to bypass traffic congestion leading up to a busy traffic signal controlled junction in a location where there was no space for an extra traffic lane. (Out-bound vehicles use[d] the public highway).
    The trackage used here consisted of longitudinal wooden beams and steel guidewalls as developed in Essen for where trams and buses share formation. Compared to wooden track in Essen the ride quality of a Mannheim kerb guided bus was considerably better, however Mannheim's track had more and sharper curves which together with the four guide-wheels (one next to each of the front and rear road wheels) gave an impression of almost 'bouncing' between the buses' four corners! In the event the distance was so short (and the already slow moving bus had to slow down even further for the level crossing) so ride quality was not really too important.
    Guided busway services ended in September 2005 when the majority of buses fitted with guide wheels were withdrawn for age reasons, and it was decided not to adapt their replacements.

    Die alten Straßenbahnen hatten noch klasse, sowie die Autos zur damaligen Zeit.

    @jeffdarga100 nope, it was diesel.
    Nowadays the guided busway has been removed and instead trhe buses share a tarmac roadway with the trams.

    Great video from my home region. When services with roller guided buses ended in 2005, they reconstructed this guided busway section to a combined bus and tram lane, where the drivers steer their buses like elsewhere.
    So they could keep the advantage of accelerating bus service by seperating it from the individual traffic without the need of having specially equipped buses for this short section in the network.
    BTW - not one of the buses or trams shown in the video still exists in Mannheim.

      I do recall seeing what looked like a military base in the distance / a little beyond the entrance to the section of guided busway; happily it was not right next to what I was filming.

    @Sascha7454 Nicht so ganz. Daimler Benz hat sein großes Buswerk in Mannheim und wollte eine Vorführstrecke, deswegen wurde das gebaut. Eigentlich war noch eine zweite, wesentlich längere Strecke geplant, aber dort wird jetzt zum Glück eine Strßenbahn gebaut.
    Eigentlich gibt es recht wenige Einsatzzwecke wo ein Spurbus Sinn macht, höchstens wenn man in einen Stadtbahntunnel wie in Essen fährt, aber sonst ist das System Mist.

      @@CitytransportInfoplus I had no idea. If this fragment were recorded from another angle, it would be possible to see (yes, as much as possible) what the entire truck itself would be, including the part of the tractor.

      Mannheim was a big millitary base until the late 90's.
      Today most of US Army in Germany is located around Kaiserslautern. So it's possible.

      Thank you. Yes, the bus still comes but O-Bahn is closed - instead the bus driver must drive the bus as in a normal 'bus lane'.

      Just for complete information. The track wasn't taken down because it did not work. The problem is, legislation changed and buses are now 2.55m wide instead of 2.5. That meant only specially adapted buses could fit the existing tracks and most of the old buses reached end of their service time.
