Same here, playing since release with small breaks in between and love playing it. Sure, some bugs/mechanics are annoying, but the game is slowly improving. Love to play the game with friends, especialy Nomad!

There are many who simply like aoe ii more than the other games. Aoe II is a living classic for me. Been playing it since youth. It's nostalgic and good. Not saying the others are bad, I enjoyed them too, but I like AoE II the most.

I think they missed the opportunity to make a more realistic rather than cartoonized style. Would be better to have more simple graphics but a dark atmosphere.

I started to realize that the better graphics in a troubling time with people not able to get good computers, means less chances to play, or just too high on the graphics that a somewhat decent computer still can’t run the game
I thought Age of Empire IV had a great launch and was much more focused on competitive multiplayer. A lot of the AoE2 pros moved to AoE4 due to the emphasis on competitive play. AoE2 remains popular because it's fantastic, has great gameplay and graphics, still getting new content, and 95% of players are extremely casual
yet, AoE2 prize pool in tournaments has double the amount of AoE4 this year. Its like MS still want people to watch AoE2 events over AoE4 or something.

But I am saying it seems that they have given up on developing AoE4 pro-scene and tournament just 2 years after releasing the games is way too immature. Unless the game just sucks and nobody buying which, but thats not the case here.
@@tigera6 They wanted aoe4 to have its own viewer base independent from other titles, however with the disastrous start and aoe2 players giving it up, the prospect is bleak even if they already fixed the game.
So it make sense that aoe2 has higher prizepool, although aoe1 still have the largest viewers.
@@CrnaStrela I think AoE2 has the most diversified viewer base, as opposed to AoE1 which focused around 2 -3 countries. But I thought the fix on AoE4 is well received, so they should try to push forward with the plan to create more popularity for the franchise. Its just strange to see a new but well-established game not receiving as much support as older ones.
Given AI shenanigans at launch, it was the opposite. TOO MUCH focus on competitive multiplayer in hopes it'll carry the game. But it's nice for the game to slowly make its niche... even if it gets weirder and weirder that each new AoE game has separate fanbase and they all exist simultaneously 😅

althrough probability is not equal, AoE 2 still at the top as live classic, and i'm a bit sad that my beloved AoE 3 are second from the end with AoE 1 probably most rare. But one can argue that Age of Mythology are also part of Age of Empires series and then AoE 3 is just at the middle of the chart.
I think when Retold be released it will be higher by player count than all other than AoE 2. If they will not screw that game ofc

I prefer the medieval age but prefer AoE 3 DE however. AoE3 DE is the best of the series.

I play on game pass and I love it. Started playing aoe as a wee lad in the late 90’s then stopped playing for around 17 years but just picked it back up about three weeks ago and it was like riding a bike. I never forgot. In that 17 yr hiatus is wasn’t like I forgot about aoe either. I continued to love it even though I stopped playing it. I think the new one is great and I play it daily. Can’t wait for the new civs and other content coming out next month!
This game is a ton of fun but aoe 2 is just better. Of course my opinion. I wish aoe 4 would have been aoe 2 remade basically. The super cartoons appeal to it is weird.
They took AOE 2 and AOE 3 and smashed them together, with AOE 3 being a bigger contributor. Very poor business decision.
And it was obvious they received harsh criticism from an early testers since most pre-release studio commentary was done from by marketing and social media employees.
@@joaocherrydon9413 Not at all. Its doing well and growing. Eventually it ll pass aoe2. Which is only still fun for people with nostalgia issues. For me 2 is one big cheese fest. And so slow....Its a taste thing ;-)
@dcolu I don't think you play aoe2 competitively as you are calling it a cheese fest. Others is preference no problem. Balance is better in aoe2. Just because of nature of shared tech tree
@@PolanaAnurag Actually , I attempted to do that, and stopped pretty fast. Got walled in, castled in and more ... several games in a row. Even double chees in 2 vs 2. Friends had a similar experience. Its just so gimmiki, in my opinion.
In aoe 4 I have not had much of that...maybe a Mongol Tower rush... Balance may be better in aoe 2, which does not need to exclude cheese strats ...also...it would be bad if balance wasnt better after all those years. That said, balance in AOE 4 is pretty good already ;-).
@@dmeolu Well it isn't cheese really. Aoe 2 multiplayer starts you at about 1000 elo. People are quite capable at that level. The gameplay has been figured out and there are plenty of guide on how to improve. Most new players experience a string of losses before experiencing their 1st win. The problem with Aoe 2 is not about gameplay or balance. It is the elo system. 1v1 new players start too high (It should be 800 or so for it to be a better exp for new players) and in teamgames it was messed up from the start (some players went till 4000 elo in teamgames). The devs did a reset and now things are slowly coming back atleast in teamgames.

The aoe4 visual aesthetic is extremely off putting to me. I don't know why they didn't try to replicate the aoe2 style but in 3d instead of having a weird modern look and golden hallucinations building structures etc.
Aoe4 is a masterpiece and at any given hour there’s minimum 10k people on 24/7

Is a trap, nothing is changed, the game has movie graphics, no physics, very simple mechanics, siege is a joke and one dimensional, buildings are smaller than units, castle spam, HRE is even more boring than release, barely unique units and the ones are boring
The lack of blood and decay of soldiers as well as no Spy tech really turns me off playing this game. Scattering the map with watchtowers to find the last building or unit on a Huge map against AI who won’t give up is just a drag.

The campaigns were and still are the worst of every AoE title in my opinion. AoE3 and Mythology showed what good campaign are.

Sooo, in the last 30 days AoE4 averaged 11k players with a peak of 21k. Compare that with AoE2 having 16k average players and a peak of 26k. NOW think about the fact AoE2 came out over 24 years ago...11

Lol no. What you must compare to is to other recent RTS games like Iron Harvest, and to AoE 3 and 1 Def editions. AoE 2 is not only most popular game from the release, but also have most active support now, its stupid to compare other games to the golden child. This is literally Rockstar CEO "Red Dead Redemption must be closed as its generate not as much money as GTA V despite being newer" logic
am i the only one who wanted AOE IV to follow III and be about the 1900s?
I'm totally wanted it. 1890-1930 tech divided in 4-5 eras, because its highly unexplored time period in RTS. There is so much medieval and WWII RTS, much less early gunpowder rts as AoE 3 and like nothing about WWI and decade-another in both sides despite military tech gap between AoE 3/Total War Fall of the Samurai and WWII being immense.
But they are clearly tried to stick closer to AoE 2 because of its populatity and low popularity of AoE 3 that tried into innovations. And AoE 2 nerds just remained in AoE 2 instead of switching to AoE 4 because its in strange limbo of being many several key decisions being copies of AoE 2 (return of drop off points, conversions, stone, time period itself) and many other very brave and innovative like most of civ unique mechanics like Rus' bounty, Mongol mobile base or Bysantine olive oil for mercs and water supply. So its not innovative nor conservative. But i appreciate that devs clearly love its game trying to create interesting mechanics instead of making Definitive edition of a Definitive Edition of AoE 2
Given the lackluster nature of aoe4 a new game set in the 19th century might have been the better idea in hindsight
Problem with age of empires 4 is it took them way too long to fix all those bugs, like the Mongol tower rush, the Springalds being spammed, water boats not working right list goes on. Took them about a year to fix some of the most simple bugs and by then people went back to the more balanced games. It may have been all fixed now but the damage is done.

AoE IV was dead on release. "Generally liked" is an interesting euphemism though. AoE IV development was the laziest of any AoE game. It's just a shitty remake of AoE2.

AoE 3 DE is the best of the series.
Even Age of Empires 3 DE received more updates and new civs and content in less time than Age 4. 2 civs in 2 years is just not enough to keep the game interesting for most players... especially after the game released with less civs, maps and other content than any other Age at release...
There's 6 new civs not 2. And the civs in aoe4 are all really unique, not reskins.
@@DanielBlakwell now it have civ variants that range from really unique ones to moderate changes compared to main civ. I think this is still more different than AoE 2 civs but less than AoE 3 even inside one culture (Asians, Native Americans, Africans, Europeans and also USA + Mexico).
Joan of Arc most unique (and barely possible to balance not being autowin nor garbage) civ in entire series of games though as its clearly isekaid from Warcraft 3 judging by mechanics.
All those civ variants were a mistake imo, they should have relegated it to a seperate gamemode and make it more polished

I just started playing and I fell in love with how steep the difficulty curve is. I've never played RTS games before so it's a lot all at once but that makes me more interested in it.
I abandoned AoE4 multiplayer because I was playing Byzantines and there was litterally no way to defeat the Ottoman free units forever strategy. Plus the bombard was broken as hell. Still havent checked if they fixed it.
My buddies and I just got into the game a couple of weeks ago and we haven’t stopped playing 🥰😂 getting us prepared for Age of mythology 😌

im level 80, just by playing campaign... during multiplayer matches i get wrecked :( and the noobs matches doesnt accept me hahaha
Idk if they changed it but at launch the longbows were severely under powered and couldnt do anything. I hear you though im just not good at proxy rts games where you need to be spamming units every second. Its pseudo strategy.

Yea i feel the same. The problem is that players follow beasty and some other pros guides and every match up is the same. People dont make new tactics and built orders are worshipped. Most of the time if you dont play the meta you cant win with ease. Team games are fun tho

Graphics are stylized, not meant to look realistic except with simple cartoon style lighting.
I played aoe3 a lot so was kind of bummed that the next game did not have a more realistic art direction

Age 4 needed to be this good on or very shortly after release to pull people away for AoE2. It's missed it's window, which is a shame because I think it's core is an excellent refinement of AoE2 and possibly superior.
Age of Empires 3 needs more recognition
The problem was the opposite: too much focus on competitive multiplayer with only casual content like campaign as the afterthought. The truth is most gamers are casuals, RTS games ESPECIALLY.
I don't have a PC for years now and I was so hyped when aoe2 de came to xbox it was nice but some things were just hard to deal with on controller. And for that AOE4 is definitely an upgrade.
All they needed to do was keep the same game mechanics and upgrade graphics with civilizations. AOE2 was basically perfect

I bought AoE4 about a week ago. Been having a blast. Didn't really care much for AoE3 even though I love the time period it takes place in. However I was shocked when I seen the player numbers. Late night weekday, I'm on Pacific time. AoE3 had 9000 playing. AoE4 had 5000. Had AoE3 improved that much since release?

It is used, just in a very late stage of the game, it’s called the Great Bombard and is only available to the ottomans

im sure i can run the game but that avx stuff is whats keeping me away from it lol i got the game when it came out and avx prevented me from launching so i just refunded. Age 2 specially and age 3 is too fun.
And now the Relic Entertainment who was responsible from the AoE4 development, laid off one third of their employees. As an old oldschool AoE2 player, I think AoE 3 was the most well thought out one from the series. Graphics, new deck system, mechanics, physics, everything was way above the average at that time. AoE4 came out like a fucking mobile game, both in graphics, mechanics and physics. Archers with aimbots, and resource/stat advantage for hard AI is lazy ass work.
This will affect CoH more. AoE is supported by Microsoft, unlike CoH. It will still receive regular updates.

Archers with aimbot are available in every prosperous and civil RTS game after 2003. AoE2 fanatics always gonna whine on better RTS.

Still needs more work on the multiplayer. Like the addition of alliances and declaration of war so traders aren’t just randomly attacked

Balance wasn’t issue, it was some quality of life features were missing and most of the people who bought the game came from different Age titles, they didn’t like the game, so they went back to their original game

i used to play aoe 2 with my friends years ago 4 came out and we all bought it and didnt like it , we started playing it like 3 months ago and i must say the game feels nice.
I just want AOEO back officially man. It was awesome, I still play it from time to time thanks to project celeste but it just isnt the same.
They need to do a map/scenario creator like back in the day. Where you can build the landscape easily and copy paste as much stuff as you want on the map. The new stuff sucks.

I don't get where you get the 16k number from. Steamcharts says AoEIV per September 2023 had an average of about 8k players per month.
