The first game in the current series of Pro Evolution Soccer games was released in October 2001 for both Sony PlayStation and PlayStation 2. It was released under the name, Winning Eleven 5 in Japan and North America.
Back when football games weren't scripted. Real proper games
They were :) PES in this video was scripted as well - in some way: you would always know ('feel') if computer opponent would take the header from you at the half of the court. Even if you are 2m tall and your opponent is 1.7m. Also you would 'feel' when the computer would take the ball from you when running down the (parallel to) the out line.

Football games may look better these days but Pro Evolution Soccer has extremely good game play. One of the greatest Football games of all time.
