For those who don't know. The Greek inventor Archimedes was from Syracuse (Siracusa) on the Island of Sicily. Rome decided they needed to take the city during the Second Punic War. Archimedes, about 75 at the time, is largely credited with the year-long defense of the city by means of his inventions. These included a crane that lifted Roman ships from the water and some type of light magnification using lenses that set Roman ships on fire from a distance. And as cool as all that sounds to maybe see, I still ain't watching this shit.

You know who I would have picked for an older female co star? Sigourney Weaver. She's in her 70's, and she still did a ton of physical training and labor for Avatar 2. Here's a quote from her about it:
"I don’t voice this, because I know that I’ll get teased mercilessly about what a wuss I am, but I think that everyone enjoys working with Jim because he does demand so much. On Avatar: The Way of Water, I was older than a lot of the other people, and we had to do a lot of parkour. We had to do burpees. We had to do freediving. Don’t you love these jobs where you have to learn some really outlandish thing that you keep with you for the rest of your life? Freediving, especially, I’m grateful that we spent a year doing that."
She commands respect, and she puts in the work behind the scenes to deliver the best performance possible. If this movie came with a better script, I think she'd be a worthy co star.

I meant I am pointing out the fact that they brushed off the death of Indiana's ONLY SON and we don't get a real moment to figure out how he even felt about him or how his death would shape the character beyond "I'm now grumpier".
If you are going to kill off Mutt, at least have the death of his only son mean something? Especially if this is his (presumed) FINAL outing.

It's okay to have a character divorced and miserable if there's actually a reason. Like John McClane in Die Hard 1, his estrangement from his wife is used to build this incredible character arc where he is humanised as a flawed man, then saves her and shows her that he loves her.
Unfortunately modern "writers" just add these things to ruin old characters and make them miserable husks, not to build character development.

I pretty much figured that they’d kill off Indy’s son. Because we all know that a story would take place in the 60s or 70s, and Nam was going on. So unless Mutt was able to finish school with high marks Nam was going to get him via the draft. But we all know that shouldn’t have happened and this is the end of the franchise. Because honestly we will need a new team and owners of Lucasfilm to rewrite or completely rebuild their franchises. SW kicking off with hopefully Lucas’s planned sequel trilogy that would erase the Disney trilogy, and Indiana Jones being completely rebooted with new actors (few I see can pick up the role, but Chris Pratt I see could do it and be a good successor to the role, but he will have to be very brutal with holding his beliefs and morals against the movie makers as to protect the future of the franchise from sjw nonsense.)
Let us all hope that eventually other movies are made with similar themes and ideas to that of the original Indy movies, ones that fill the shoes of what came before and do their best to bring back the classic adventure genre that is sorely missed.

The new movie is set in 1969, so he’d be at least in his late 20s and too old to be drafted (the cutoff was 26 in Vietnam). He would have to have volunteered.

I was on a flight a week ago and decided to watch The Last Crusade, one of my favorite films of all time. Throughout the film, Indiana Jones is equal parts the clever hero and the bumbling fool, there are so many moments where Sean Connery gets to make him look like an idiot. But then, there are plenty of moments where that is reversed and Sean Connery gets to be the butt of the joke, and at the end of the day it's their combined wit and skill that gets Indy through the traps. Nobody is consistently better or worse than the other, everyone has their moment of triumph and failure, and throughout the film it is consistently always fun. But then you have a movie like this, where the failures are one-sided and the tone is bitter and spiteful.

Yeah they completely forgot or ignored how the magical stuff worked in their previous Indy movies. What really made Indy movies stand out from generic real-world-but-with-magic is that it was all pretty subtle and never clearly explained.
You never had a wizard say "I cast fireball", you had ancient biblical stuff like the Arc or the Holy Grail, ancient occult magic stones in Temple of Doom, hell even the aliens in Crystal Skull were hardly explained at all. With all these "magical/fantastic" objects the viewer didn't really care about how or why they were made since it could as well have been God or a (super)natural phenomenon.
But directly saying "this historical figure crafted this device in the middle of a battle to save his and his armies' asses"... that's just... *no* it's wrong. It directly breaks the charm of the previous movies and goes against everything that this franchise established. Imagine if I went back in time and told you Lucasfilm is bought by Disney, they put a woman in charge who wears “the force is female” shirts. The new Star Wars films are about how Luke and Anakin were failures who accomplished nothing, and the real chosen one and hero is the new female lead, she is effortlessly great at everything and she defeats the empire and emperor who came back. Then the new Indiana Jones film is about a old Indy whose son and teased successor is unceremoniously killed off screen, and Indy is replaced by a new female lead who is effortlessly better than him at everything and replaces him.
You’d think I was going on some weird rant, making up a straw man to ridiculous and cartoonishly parody like to ever happen. Like someone making fun of feminist influence in films would make it up as a joke. But it actually happened.

  • @initial_C
    @initial_C ปีที่แล้ว +4

Gah...I have a lot to say here. I'm used to classic franchises getting burned to the ground in the name of PROGRESS, but Indy was one that definitely meant something to me. Between Indy and Lara Croft I was influenced to study archaeology for a while, and still- the original three films did kind of foster an interest in history, world cultures, and religions.
On top of that, I'm recalling Plinkett's description of why Indy works as an escapist character (the one including "he punches people" a half dozen times). Indy is someone it would be cool to be, not someone that has to deal with real world issues like aging. I always thought Indy drinking from the Grail at the end and being granted "everlasting life" was the perfect way to cap off the character- that should be the final word, he lives on forever now, no longer just a mere mortal but a character that lives on and we look back on. And in the very end he rides off into the sunset. That's the end.
But of course, Hollywood can't leave well enough alone. Hopefully this is the final nail in the coffin for Lucasfilm. But we know it won't.
Also, something interesting- the artifacts in the original three films were based on things described in the world's myths and religions. Crystal Skull was based on some of Dan Aykroyd's insane paranormalist shit and the Dial of Destiny...WTF even is that?
Finally, how is Harrison Ford okay with it? The check cleared.

Here’s my pitch for Indiana jones VI. Short round is traveling through south east Asia wearing the iconic hat. He’s sad about his friends being dead but honors their memory by carrying on with their work. He stumbles into a prisoner of war camp and finds mutt held for over a decade. Barely recognizable. Short round breaks him out and they have adventures fleeing North Vietnamese Army troops. Doesn’t even really what relic short round is looking for. The movie will focus on family and never giving up. Towards the end short round gets knocked down the hat flies off, mutt picks it up the iconic music hits hard he puts on the hat and kicks everyone’s ass. The end.

I've been saying for the last couple years that the last movie had to be short round and Indy on an adventure from their past. This was so easy to get right. Mutt and Short round at odds because indie was more of a father to Short round than he ever was to mutt..... Think of that nature. Could have set up a fun buddy franchise for the two of them after Indy passes the torch to his two sons.
It's not hard to hit the heartstrings and give a fanbase what they want.

Setting a last Indiana Jones movie with HF in the Vietnam War era would have been a good send-off. Historical conflict as the background while Indy has to gather artifacts before they might get destroyed/end up as colateral damage of the war.

They forgot how to write strong, female characters. Ripley? Sarah Connor (in the first two Terminator films)? Xena? Xena was strong, independent, powerful, but she never had to degrade Hercules to be on his level. That's why she was liked.

I just looked at the He111 schematics online. As I figured there are Fuel Tanks in the wing between the engines and the fuselage. There is No Way that Fleabag would've gotten into the plane as shown. I was shaking my head watching that in the movie and I wasn't wrong. Also I've never seen an He111 with twin rudders. I guess that they just didn't have anyone that could say No Way someone can do that. Don't most films have Technical people with that job to tell the writers that they Can't do something?

The most amusing thing is that this is meant to be yet another "setup for a planned trilogy" that hasn't just failed to launch, it exploded on the launchpad before getting an inch off the ground. Back in the day, all the progenitors of these films were made without concern about laying a foundation for more films, they just made good films and got greenlit for sequels. Today all they do is build a house of cards on a foundation of sand, and then blame anyone but themselves when these hubristic blunders repeatedly fall apart before they even finish production.

The "magical brown little boy sidekick who can do everything" when done innocently is fine. When it becomes a trope played as a "go to" for diversity brownie points, it becomes one of those condescending stereotypes that might "mean well" but look and sound terrible in practice.
