  • Not only do all three of us love Rush, they are the cornerstone of our friendship. How did it take us this long to finally make this video? We're not really sure. But the time has come...this is the Listography of Rush!
    ****
Rush was a Canadian rock band formed in Toronto in 1968, consisting of Geddy Lee (bass, vocals, keyboards, composer), Alex Lifeson (guitars, composer), and Neil Peart (drums, percussion, lyricist). After its formation in 1968, the band went through several configurations before arriving at its classic power trio lineup with the addition of Peart in 1974, who replaced original drummer John Rutsey right after the release of their eponymous debut album, which contained their first highly-regarded song, "Working Man".
After Peart joined the band, Rush achieved commercial success in the 1970s with several albums, including Fly by Night, (1975), 2112 (1976), A Farewell to Kings (1977) and Hemispheres (1978). The band's rise in popularity continued throughout the 1980s and 1990s, with some albums charting highly in both Canada and the US, including Permanent Waves (1980), Moving Pictures (1981), Signals (1982) and Counterparts (1993). Rush continued to record and perform until 1997, after which the band entered a four year hiatus due to personal tragedies in Peart's life. The trio regrouped in 2001 and released three more studio albums: Vapor Trails (2002), Snakes & Arrows (2007), and Clockwork Angels (2012). Rush ceased large-scale touring at the end of 2015, and Lifeson announced in January 2018 that the band would not continue. On January 7, 2020, Peart died of glioblastoma, a type of brain cancer at the age of 67.
Rush is known for its musicianship, complex compositions, and eclectic lyrical motifs drawing heavily on science fiction, fantasy and philosophy. The band's style changed over the years, from a blues-inspired hard rock beginning, later moving into progressive rock, then a period marked by heavy use of synthesizers, before returning to guitar-driven hard rock since the end of the 1980s. The members of Rush have been acknowledged as some of the most proficient players on their respective instruments, with each winning numerous awards in magazine readers' polls.
Rush ranks 88th in the U.S. with sales of 25 million albums and industry sources estimate their total worldwide album sales at over 40 million as of 2005. Rush has been awarded 14 Platinum and 3 multi-Platinum albums in the US plus 17 Platinum albums in Canada. Rush was nominated for seven Grammy Awards, won several Juno Awards, and won an International Achievement Award at the 2009 SOCAN Awards. The band was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.

Geddy is my rock god. I don’t listen to Rush anymore - burnt out on them but still my favorite band of all time.
Thanks so much for covering them - I love your show - you guys are great - love your opinions on rock !

I'm happy for the love for Hold Your Fire. A lot of people put that album toward the bottom of the discography. I'd definitely put it Top 5 for me. Happy to hear all your comments were so positive. Great video.

I love Rush just as much as you three guys; they've had a huge influence on my entire life and I view them as intellectual and emotional spirit guides. They're musical and lyrical educators who'll sharpen one's sensibilities, broaden perspectives and help develope intuition and awareness. You guys listen intently and assimilate their magic and I know this based on the Listography Rush album rankings.

the reviews are in and The Digital Man and The Analog Kid agree: "Listography's Rush Albums Ranked Remastered exceeds all expectations. All three Listo boys bring their A-games with deeply insightful analysis and humorous personal stories. Kramzer in particular goes full 'PHD in Rushology' with his articulate reviews of even the most molecular Rush moments. 5 and a half stars."
I am a 52-yr-old lifelong Rush fan and this conversation just nailed it end to end. Brilliant.
IMO the empirically best Rush album is Permanent Waves, but factoring in deep emotional connections my Top 5 are:
    1. SIGNALS
    2. MOVING PICTURES
    3. PERMANENT WAVES
    4. POWER WINDOWS
    5. ROLL THE BONES
Six would be HYF, which I agree with Jason and Kramzer is outstanding and underappreciated.
    Listography & Rush 4ever 🎶🙏🔥🎉

Rush has been my band from the beginning. I think each member is at the top of there respective fields where instrumentation is concerned and my personal favorite is Alex. Those mid 80's releases really take Alex out of the mix and that hurts my heart. Those albums, as great as they are, take a hit when I can't hear Alex like we couldmthroughoutnthe 70xs and early 80's.
These guys have not released a clunker throughout their career and that makes them unequalled after 40 yrs.
Well done gentlemen. Nobody is wrong here since you are listening to and celebrating the greatest band ever...RUSH!

Wow, your top 5ish ratings are similar to mine. Kram and I didn't jive on the ELO list but we do here! My top 5 includes Hemispheres, so it's basically Hemispheres through Grace Under Pressure. That truly is the sweet spot for me with this band. I will always love the earlier albums, especially Caress (gasp!), but albums like PW and Signals are downright masterpieces. Great job guys. BTW, Tyler Warren just posted an entire album cover of P/G on April 12, which was the 40th anniversary of this album. It's so KILLER! Check it out.

Fantastic job, guys. Had no idea they were the cornerstone of your relationship. That said, a "Power Trio" band is certainly appropriate! I see you guys as a Power Trio of music reviewers, complimenting each other so well with your diverse viewpoints. As for me, I LOVE Rush. Been a fan since I first heard "All of the World's A Stage" shortly after it was first released. Also agree with your collective Top 5 choices. "Permanent Waves" through "Power Windows" is the "Power-Band" for sure. ;)

This was the best album re-listen I've enjoyed in a long time! Thank you, boys!!
I've been a Rush fan since I first heard the live album "All the worlds a stage" in 1976, when I was 8, and then spent all my allowance $$ to buy their earlier albums. They forever changed the way I listen to and appreciate music.
In 1991, I took a guided tour of Le Studio, in Morin Heights, Quebec; a 5 minute drive from my aunt + uncle's house in St. Adolphe. Rush made some of my favorite records at that studio. I remember crying a little.
My list skews a bit older, because I'm older than you guys:
    1. Permanent waves
    2. Moving pictures
    3. Hemispheres
    4. A Farewell to Kings
    5. Signals
    6. Fly By Night
    7. 2112

I watched this video a couple of years ago and used it as basis to further investigate Rush. I was a huge fan between 2112 and Moving Pictures but wasn't keen on the more synthy move after that. But I am now complete convert to mid 80s Rush. Signals, Grace under pressure, Power windows, all 5 star albums!

Hail Joe, a fellow Canuck and bassist. Great lists. Can’t go wrong with most of their catalogue. Caress of Steel has climbed my list from bottom just into top 10 the more I listen to it, especially with Baccus Plateau one of my favourite Rush songs. Permanent Waves turned me from a fan to a mega fan when I bought it in 1980, so it’s top of the list with Moving Pictures next, then all the ‘70s albums followed by 80s albums. But you’re splitting hairs for most of their output

    Fun fact for Krams:
When `Signals` came out, my best friend - Buddha - lived on the edge of a housing track. Beside and behind his house was a covered walk bridge that crossed over to the next subdivision. We would load our `Signals` cassettes into our Walkman’s and around 11 at night, go up on the bridge and blast `Signals` super loud on our headphones. And light up some sweet flavored Mary Jane. And wait for the train to come. We could tell when it was getting close because we could see it’s light glaring over the roofs and thru the trees. We could not see the actual train until it was about 50 feet away and coming around the bend. And it was BOOKING! It was always one of those fast Amtracks that are about 4 cars long. We grabbed hold of the chain wire mesh that kept one from falling over and as it passed under the bridge it was ROARING - MUCH LOUDER than the music! And talk about a RUSH! When the bridge started shaking and the wind from the train hit you it WAS A RUSH! And those rare times when the engineer driving the train noticed us and hit his horn - PHUCK!!!
This was the best and most surprising video I have seen by you guys, because your taste matched up so well with mine.
I mean MY GAWD… `Hold Your Fire` is gong to make the Top 10? And not just with Krams but Jason too!
And then Joe makes his CLASSIC #1 pick.. who knew!!
    19 Presto
I have taken enough time so let’s make this quick
    8 Hemispheres
    7 Farewell To Kings
    6 Power Windows
    5 Hold Your Fire
    4 Permanent Waves
    3 Signals
    2 Moving Pictures

Signals. ( I think Chemistry is their most underrated song )

Greetings from Rush's Hometown of Toronto, Canada. Not quite new to the channel; I commented on the Queen ranking last week and have watched the Steely Dan one as well.
Fascinating getting your perspectives on this. I have found a few "rank the Rush album" videos on youtube and I just how how they are all so different. I thought that most of the bottom picks would at least be the same for most people, but they really aren't (some people rate the last three albums from the 2000s very highly, especially Snakes and Arrows and Clockwork Angels).
My two favourite Rush albums are probably Signals, and Hemispheres. Kind of two opposite sides of the Rush experiecne really, and I think that's probablyi why I like them both about equally. They both represent the pinnacle of what Rush was trying to do in a certain vein (Hemispheres the prog, Signals the thoughtful but accessible pop/rock). Jason is right ona bout Signals btw and I *love* "Analog Kid".
That whole stretch from..I don't know, i think, Hold your Fire, to Counterparts, really does very little for me. I used to say the same about the early 80s synth albums but I've noticed I gain a little appreciation for each subsequent album as time goes on. Most recently it has indeed been Power Windows. But I just can't see myself loving those other albums much. I was a kid in the 90s and that's when I started getting into the band. At the time, like (I suspect) most 90s kids, I hated the synth sounds of the 80s (though interestingly was ok with 70s synth sounds, moogs and such) and also disliked that shiny plastic 80s production jobs. They did grow on me though. Now I actually love the way Power Windows sounds, somehow.
But as to that stretch of albums I think might forever be closed to me...Roll the Bones is the only CD I ever legitimately used as a drinks coaster. That was definitely early on in my "70s Rush or nothing" phase though.

Really enjoyed watching this video, even though I don't know much about Rush. That said Rush was the favorite band of my favorite teacher (history and social studies) growing up, so I gotta give them credit for that. Something about their hits (the synths, maybe) turned me off when I was younger but the sound does intrigue me more and more as I revisit some of those songs. Fun to listen to your glowing reviews (almost feels like the way many reviewers talk about Radiohead) which makes me more excited to potentially dive in more.

It’s here! My Christmas present from Listography!
A lot to say, but much of it was summed up by you guys. I call them my favorite band and have for a long time. The Rush well runs deep for me. I also have to think they’re my most listened to band and I can’t help but to include 4 of their albums in my personal top 100.
They’re pretty darn important to me and my development as a listener, musician, and yes, human being.
It wasn’t ever just their songs, albums, concerts or virtuosity that made Rush so special. It was the thing that ties it all together; Their chemistry. The remarkable friendship that lasted nearly 20 (gold) records. The fourth member of the band, that layer of spiritual unity between the bars of their compositions that could have only been brought out by the three of them.
    As for my list *today*
    19.) Test For Echo
    18.) Rush
    17.) Vapor Trails

      #1-4 - 10’s/strong 9’s
-the top shelf records. My very favorites in the catalog. These are the 4 in my Top 100. (For the record, while I think Moving Pictures is closer to a 10 than Signals, I have more personal connection to Signals than MP. However, I have consistently found them to be in the same realm of excellence)
      #5-7
-9’s on their best day, but mainly 8/8.5’s. I love these records and they mean a lot to me but they aren’t in my top 100 (P/G is fucking excellent though).
      #8-10
-8’s at their best but generally more like 7’s. While they’re good records with standout moments, I have my issues with them.
      #11-13
-Kind of a weaker version of the previous group. 6-7’s but they can be my go-to Rush records from time to time.
      #14-15
-6’s with big highlights. Struggled with the placement of these two albums because I REALLY like half the material on each record and kinda couldn’t care less for the rest.
      #16-19
-5’s that behave like the previous group but less enjoyably. I return to these albums resoundingly the least even though I don’t find any of them to be terrible.

This is kinda hard, especially determining the top spots. The classic synth period keeps climbing for me though- Signals, Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows, and Hold Your Fire are fantastic albums. Power Windows especially has such a unique warm feel to it and I love that Grace Under Pressure is like the opposite of it, being cold and icy, but still from that same synth driven era. I love at least the top 12, and there aren’t very many bands I listen to with that many great albums so by that score alone Rush has to be in my top five favorite bands ever.

Can't help going back to this topic- lot's of personal stuff here:
High School talent show 1982- we rocked Tree's, La Villa, & Working Man. No vocals of course, what 16yr old could handle that? Had my double cow bell, woodblock combo that kinda sounded ok!? Won the show! The rich-kid guitarist in the band had the real-deal Moog Taurus pedals and PA to match.
2015- One of my son's basketball teammates parent's was a sports memorabilia broker and had regular contact with Geddy. Blue Jay's and hockey stuff mostly. He played a round of golf with Geddy and Alex and posed the question to Alex, "Why still touring after 60?" Alex replied, Standing on stage in front of thousand's and kicking off Spirit Of Radio is still pretty cool.
And then the wine deal- I've sold premium wine in the Midwest for 25 years. Numerous wine shops have mentioned a Rush visit and how modest and cool they are.
    Cheers!

I am a huge fan of the early stuff. Everything up and including "Moving Pictures" is great. They lost me at "Signals". It took until "Roll the Bones" to bring me back. Can't stay away from this thread because I love it so much. And you guys inspired me to go check out the albums I hadn't heard. Have given Clockwork Angels a heavy workout the last week or so. Tend to be with Jason on this one. For me it's like an hour of this kind of mundane heavy rock that doesn't sink in for me. I can't understand the lyrics. Clockmakers and something. Not getting it. That bass drum just pounding the shit out of you for an hour. And I'm a drummer! For me it's like Geddy Lee signing with some generic heavy rock group. Probably a little harsh but there you go. Then you get to the final track and that Lifeson solo and the emotion finally comes - it's like, where has this been the last hour?
For Vapor Trails I didn't know which to go with but didn't think I could deal with "clipping" so went with the remix. I remember some of these tunes from the Rio live album. It's really hit and miss. Pretty bad overall. Some of this later stuff is like some lame late period R.E.M. or something. Awful. And some of it is super cool. His voice on "Earthshine" sinister and intense as fxck. Like - my guys! There they are again, yes.
Test for Echo will end it - I'll have finally gotten to all the full studio albums.

A rare discography where there are no bad albums. My takeaway quote from this video is, "You're not a Rush fan, you're a prog rock fan who likes Rush." Definitely connected with me, as the '80s are my favorite decade for Rush, as demonstrated in my list:
    19. Test For Echo- I just never connected with this one. I only listen to it out of obligation when doing full discography marathons. Not bad, but one has to go last.
    18. Caress of Steel- I agree a lot about what was already said. Flashes of future brilliance here and there, but doesn't seem like Rush knew where to go.
    17. Vapor Trails- the first Rush song I ever heard was "Secret Touch" when it was on the radio; I was 13. Thought the lady singing had a very distinctive voice 😂 Very dense album, enjoyable, but not one I reach for much.
    16. Snakes & Arrows- not too much to say, I haven't listened to this enough to have a stronger opinion of it. I just remember liking it.
    15. Clockwork Angels- See above
    14. Rush- A solid classic blues rock/proto metal album.
    13. Fly By Night- Don't get me wrong, I really like this album. A lot. It's a testament to just how much I like the rest of the albums. Still a very young band shaking off the early blues rock sound.
    12. Counterparts- I can't stand "Nobody's Hero," but the rest of the album grooves hard. Good production, solid songwriting.
    11. Roll The Bones- I like Rupert Hine's production, for some reason the razor thin mix works for me. Feels like Presto pt 2 in some places.
    10. Hemispheres- I love prog rock, and I love this album. I don't reach for it as much as I should, but it's my favorite prog album from 1978.
    9. Presto- My friend got me into this album early in my Rush discovery, so I have fond memories attached to it. Back to a more guitar-focused sound.
    8. Hold Your Fire- I love the atmosphere on this album, mystical, introspective, nostalgic.
    7. 2112- I love the title track, side B is more of an obligation for me to finish the album out of respect. Not bad songs at all, but "2112" is why I come back over and over.
    6. A Farewell To Kings- my favorite '70s Rush. Prog rock AND pop hooks? Yes please.
    5. Permanent Waves- I feel so bad ranking this so low... it's a downright classic, and objectively deserves top-3 placement. Unfortunately, this is a subjective list.
4.Grace Under Pressure- I love how dark this album sounds, very cold and digital. Yes, it was peak Police worship, but it's way more consistent than any album the Police ever made.
    3. Power Windows- My top-3 is where I have the most trouble ranking. If it was based on atmosphere alone, this is my number 1. Solid pop writing, amazing musicianship, detailed, crystal clear production.
    2. Moving Pictures- Almost every fiber in my being wants to put this first. The first Rush album I ever bought. I don't care how many times I hear it, I'll never get tired of "Tom Sawyer." I enjoy side B just as much as side A. Objectively as close to a perfect album as Rush has got.
    1. Signals- I have to be true to my heart. This is the Rush album I've played the most, and "Digital Man" is my favorite Rush song full stop. Any flaws it has don't register for me. It has all my favorite elements of '70s and 80's Rush wrapped up in one album: killer bass, drums, and guitar, pop hooks, cold synths, and the last hints of prog before going full pop. Just absolutely incredible.

Really liked Jason’s comment on the synths providing support and adding color for the band. I LOVE 80’s Rush. I like the 70’s stuff a lot too, the run they went on from 1976-1985 is almost untouchable for me. That’s 8 great albums, and they even have great stuff outside of that timeline. I find Hold Your Fire to be just a slight step below the previous run. And the way people usually feel about Roll the Bones is the way I feel about Presto, which is just a really charming and enjoyable record with a nice vibe to it, despite the thinner sound.

Subdivisions may be my favorite song. But so many great albums and songs to choose from.

Finally wrapped up the discography with the one missing piece - Test for Echo. 🤩. I dig it! Really good, simple in your face production. Some really cool stuff e.g. “Time and Motion.” Sounds like a Hemispheres sequel. Underrated album anyone?

Took me a while to get into them, probably because of Lee's vocals on the early stuff just hard to get though. Really got into their 80's and early 90's stuff, the later stuff unfortunately I haven't given it a good listen, so they're going to be at the bottom of my list today.

I’ve always had a soft spot for Roll the Bones. It was one of the first albums I ever bought with my own money--right after I got a job as a 16 year old stocking shelves at a local store, I picked this one up.
That said, my top 5 Rush albums are:
    1. Moving Pictures
    2. Signals
    3. Farewell to Kings
    4. Presto
    5. Fly By Night
    Just missed: Roll the Bones.

Guys the only progressive rock I like are Rush and Pink Floyd. Are Rush progressive rock. Seen them only twice 1981 and 2011. Stopped listening to them Circa Power Windows & picked them up again circa Vapour Trails. Keep up the good work guys I'm picking up tons of great music ideas. You deserve way more subscribers. I listen to Sea of Tranquillity but its mainly metal which is ok but I'm 56 now and I was into heavy rock at 16 prior to discovering bob Dylan. My musical tastes have changed. Much more subtle now

1985 was a great year, also the year I was born. :) I have been a bit of a bad Canadian as I have not listened to all of Rush's albums. Their music has always been around as they get a lot of play here. After watching this I really want to check out more of their 80s albums as Subdivisions has always been my favourite song of theirs and I generally just love an 80s sound.
Lots of fun to see you all rank a band you love so much.

Thanks for a great show. I had stopped listening to Rush often when Grace came out the direction was just too different for my taste at the time. Listening to your list and comments has me going back and listening to the material from that point on. I should not have given up on them I am enjoying it much more now. I particularly like Hold Your Fire.

I think it's totally cool that you took a break from Rush and you're just getting back to them now. I had to do the same thing because my tastes were going in different directions (pretty much stopped listening when Power Windows came out). But I have very much enjoyed going back to them to do this listography.

"Moving Pictures" is what I would consider a perfect album, front to back it is amazing. I'm really not a fan of what the band put out from "Hold Your Fire" through "Test for Echo" outside of a handful of songs over the five albums.
