  • We're back to full strength this week! All three Listographers are on board to rank the studio albums of Queen.
    We left it up to the audience by posting a poll on our community tab of some acts that Jason had done solo and were ripe for a remastering. The competition was close but Queen eeked out a win, beating Steely Dan by 1%.
    Fear not Steely Dan fans...The Dan is coming up next week!

    Queen are a British rock band formed in London in 1970. Their classic line-up was Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), Roger Taylor (drums, vocals) and John Deacon (bass). Their earliest works were influenced by progressive rock, hard rock and heavy metal, but the band gradually ventured into more conventional and radio-friendly works by incorporating further styles, such as arena rock and pop rock.
    Before forming Queen, May and Taylor had played together in the band Smile. Mercury was a fan of Smile and encouraged them to experiment with more elaborate stage and recording techniques. He joined in 1970 and suggested the name "Queen". Deacon was recruited in February 1971, before the band released their eponymous debut album in 1973. Queen first charted in the UK with their second album, Queen II, in 1974. Sheer Heart Attack later that year and A Night at the Opera in 1975 brought them international success. The latter featured "Bohemian Rhapsody", which stayed at number one in the UK for nine weeks and helped popularise the music video format.
    The band's 1977 album News of the World contained "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions", which have become anthems at sporting events. By the early 1980s, Queen were one of the biggest stadium rock bands in the world. "Another One Bites the Dust" from The Game (1980) became their best-selling single, while their 1981 compilation album Greatest Hits is the best-selling album in the UK and is certified nine times platinum in the US. Their performance at the 1985 Live Aid concert is ranked among the greatest in rock history by various publications. In August 1986, Mercury gave his last performance with Queen at Knebworth, England. In 1991, he died of bronchopneumonia-a complication of AIDS-and Deacon retired in 1997. Since 2004, May and Taylor have toured under the "Queen +" name with vocalists Paul Rodgers and Adam Lambert.
    Queen have been a global presence in popular culture for more than four decades. Estimates of their record sales range from 170 million to 300 million, making them one of the world's best-selling music artists. In 1990, Queen received the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, and with each member having composed hit singles all four were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2005 they received the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Song Collection from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors, and in 2018 they were presented the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

    Agree with much of what was said here. I don’t think Queen is overrated at all when considering the diversity of musical styles and risk they took, the talent of each member, and how incredible those early albums are and how many hidden gems are on each of them. I can’t think of many other bands that have influenced such a diverse range of artists - from Iron Maiden and Metallica to Boston and then Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga. I do agree they are overrated by most fans as they judge them solely by the hits and haven’t heard the first 4 albums or have any idea how hard these guys rocked live before they got mainstream. I think if Queen arrived in 1970-1971 and not 73 the catalog would look way different because they wouldn’t have had to change their sound so quickly to keep themselves relevant around punk/new wave.
    Along with the first Van Halen and Back in Black, Night at the Opera and News of the world were the first tapes I ever owned when I was elementary school and they were the first bad whose catalog I completely went through (Pink Floyd followed shortly after). Those 70s are all over the place but that is what I find so endearing about them - a different kind of experimental creating a musical adventure when it was done well. The variety of the music I listen to now I owe in part to Queen and the fact I started my personal musical quest there. Prob Pink Floyd too because I’ve always Sun Ra and avant-Jazz because of that early catalog.
    Queen II - for me it’s their masterpiece. You summed it up so well Joe “a Renaissance painting.” I can’t think of any other album like this and just so easy to get immersed and find new things every time I listen to it.
    Sheer Heart Attack - one of the best album openers ever? The first speed/trash metal song ever recorded?? That incredible medley on side one, the first John Deacon pop song on side 2?? Only knocks are I can do without In the Lap of the Gods and the production on Now I’m Here is missing something (song always way better live).
    A Night at the Opera - this is a perfect album IMO, no weak spots to my ears. Great shout out on The Profits Song. Love the Brian May songs on here 39, Good Company, and Sweet Lady is awesome (if you love Kiss how can you not love this song)! I still rank Sheer Heart attack higher because of the raw power in parts and just the murkiness of that album I like more.
    Queen - such an underrated album can’t agree more. Liar followed by The Night Comes Down awesome, the instrumental part on My Fairy King that has such a unique ending in those final notes, those power chords kicking in the middle of Jesus showing what a powerhouse these guys could be when they wanted. The production gives it this dark vibe which makes a perfect nighttime album.
    News of the World - skip to track 3 Sheer Heart Attack and its such a perfect set of songs. Who could pull off Sheer Heart Attack then follow it up with something like All Dead All Dead? It’s Late, Spread Your Wings so good. Gimme generic rockers like Sleeping on the Sidewalk all day.
    A Day at the Races - its a great album IMO but a step down from the first 4 for me for two reasons. First, the production doesn’t have the same flourishes as ANATO - the Brian May jazz band, the touches like on Seaside.....it’s the first album they produced themselves without Roy Thomas Baker and it sounds more polished/less experimental/more straightforward. Second a couple very weak songs in White Man and Teo Torriate which I always thought was cheesy. That said, side one absolutely perfect with a couple tracks that are among the best in the catalog.
    The Game - a great pop record. A few of these songs I’ll never need to hear again but Save Me, Play the Game, Dragon Attack, Sail away all great. I actually really enjoy the Roger Taylor new wave cuts also.
    Jazz - def the weakest least consistent album of the 70s, the worst produced too. Some great moments like Dead on Time and Mustapha but also a few cheesy clunkers from Deacon. Their only 70s album I find myself pulling off after a few songs and going to something else.
    The Works - this is a good album and prob the best one they did after The Game. Agree it’s almost a carbon copy of The Game but there are a bunch of good songs on here.
    Innuendo - I want to rank this a few spots higher - the title track and Bijou in particular are some of the best things they ever did. I like the generic rockers too and Ride the Wild Wind.......the cat song though just sucks and a few other ones aren’t good which takes it down a few spots.
    A Kind of Magic - title track (love the guitar solo in this song - just the perfect solo for a pop song), Princes of the Universe (awesome), Kurgans Theme (Mays intro a nod to EVH), and Who Wants to Live Forever. That’s pretty much it though - the rest isn’t good. Highlander did win the Academy Award for best movie ever made according to Ricky Bobby.
    Flash Gordon - yes I’m ranking this one higher. Just two great songs on it but so many ethereal instrumental pieces that I really love. I always thought Blade Runner had one of the best soundtracks ever and some of these take me to a similar place (although not nearly as good as the Vangelis work). Helps that I loved this movie as a little kid.
    Hot Space - Under Pressure and Cool Cat are the only redeeming qualities. Side one is def a turkey.
    The Miracle - Joe summed it up well.
    Made in Heaven - maybe I need to hear this again but I hated it the first time I heard it. I understand the circumstances but just a strange vibe through it.

      Nope, strong disagree. Great album with good filler but lots of filler nontheless. That's the whole thing with Queen, 4 different songwriters with unique voices with no central authority/ego controlling the output. All of their albums have filler because of the free-wheeling nature of how they organized the band.

      Nah, . Sheer Heart Attack, A Day At The Races, Queen, Opera have no filler, or very little filler. We also have different opinions of what filler is since we all like different things. I feel the 80's albums have more filler, but they're are people out there that love those songs that I consider filler.. I love a song called filler, but you may hate the song called filler.

      @@Destroythealliance I define filler as a song I feel is not quite complete, or just there to fill time/add a certain sound but clearly not meant to be a stunning showoff for the bands capabilities. I love queen, especially Their early stuff (honestly with a few big exception I don't really like 80s queen. 70s queen is genius though) Dosn't mean I can't also see the flaws. For years I've said Jazz is my favorite queen album and one of my favorite albums of all time. Dosn't mean I don't see songs like "get down make love" as good ideas that feel unfinished and are there to add variety but not necessarily the best of the best. Sweet lady really feels like that to me as well. Good riff and melody, but super simple and repetitive and has a bit of going thru the motions vibe. It's Like they said "we gotta add an extra rocker so quick think of a riff and lyric and boom done". Anyway I'm just trying to have a good back and forth with other music fans who appreciate good stuff like queen. Calling me an asshole seems like an overreaction.

    Regarding Queens’ popularity in the U.K.: yep, they’re huge. The problem, however, is that it’s almost solely based around their ‘hits’ and that Queens Greatest Hits is the biggest-selling album of all time, here; followed by another act whom you could label similarly regarding popularity: ABBA, with their compilation, ABBA GOLD. I'm an Englishman that has been a Queen fan since my dad brought home the Night at The Opera album. Queen never really made it big in the US and the comments in this video pretty much say why, I think. It's a cultural thing. In my opinion Queen's greatest strength was their live performances, which you just had to be there to understand how emotionally powerful Queen were, and they set their songs in their proper context. No-one just walked off after a Queen gig; you floated out of the arena and didn't come down for days after. I stuck with watching this video to the end because I was intrigued enough to want to hear a differing point of view, although I think attempting to rank music is a pretty lame and dullard thing to do. Anyway, a big thank you for at least putting serious thought into the back catalogue of a band that has been a big part of my life. And by the way, Queen II is probably their finest recording work. Thanks again.

      I think, relatively speaking, the most anti-Queen dissent comes from British people (even if it's dwarfed by the love for Queen). There's a strong leftist/leftfield element in the UK that despises Queen, mostly for political reasons. For example: if someone raves about The Clash and The Smiths they'll most likely hate Queen.

    I love Queen but they're not really an albums band to me, at least not in the same way as most of the other big classic rock groups. Even their best studio releases have a little filler on them (and their worst ones are almost all filler.) On the other hand, their best songs are as memorable as rock music gets and their ability to hop between genres is truly remarkable. Queen's discography may be weaker than most bands of their stature but I think their peak performances are so epic it justifies the praise they get.
    MY RATING SYSTEM:
    5.0 = major classic
    4.5 = minor classic
    4.0 = great
    3.5 = very good
    3.0 = good
    2.5 = fair
    2.0 = poor
    1.5 = awful
    1.0 = historically awful
    I don't go below 1 star because once I'm in the realm of the truly terrible I don't care to differentiate anymore. Anything I rate 3.5 stars or higher is an album I'm enthusiastic about and would likely revisit at some point.

      Agree with you that Queen is not really a great "albums band". I think they released a ton of great singles, but, more often then not, I'd be happy listening to their greatest hits albums. I mentioned them on the "Bands with no 5-Star Albums" videos, and I stand by it. They have a few that are strong 4-stars, but there always seems to be at least one or two clunkers on all their albums that keep them from achieving greatness.

    • @AbbeyRoadkill1
      @AbbeyRoadkill1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@threestringsomg I could've given The Game another half-star except I don't care for pretty much the entire 2nd half of that album. I think it's got about 4 legitimately great songs on it (and those type of albums struggle to get to 4 stars in my book.) Remember, we're rating the entire album, not just the singles. If I were rating only the singles pretty much every '70s Queen album would get 5 stars. I just think their deep album tracks, on average, aren't as strong as many of the other famous classic rock bands.

    Queen is the second best selling band behind The Beatles, the 4th best selling artist of all time. The movie was made because Queen is the best selling legacy artist on Spotify. They are definitely in the very top league. I don't think you guys really get Queen which is fine, people have different taste. Personally Radio Gaga to me is one of Queen's worse songs. Some stuff on News Of The World may sound basic, but Queen is never basic, their signwriting is always complex. We Are The Champions have 27 different cords, the song has loads of key changes, modal mixture and different time signatures. If you only know the hits then you don't really know Queen. I very much disagree on Innuendo and the low ranking of Jazz. The Hot Space songs are pretty great live. Michael Jackson was inspired to do Thriller from listening to Hot Space. Mustapha is not really made up words it is Farsi and Hebrew, it is one song that really goes back to Freddie Mercury's background.

      Just because we / someone isn't crazy about it doesn't mean "they don't get it" . A song can have 3,000 chords and invent new keys but it still can pale in comparison to a beautiful 3 chord ballad by bob dylan - kram

    • @ZENOBlAmusic
      @ZENOBlAmusic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TastesLikeMusic I did say that I understood that people have different taste, I still watched the whole video. One thing you guys have wrong, is that Freddie's voice became high and higher as he aged, he sang some of his highest notes on Innuendo other then live performances (In All Gods People F#5 in full voice)! His voice was just thin when he was younger, but he actually sang far higher in the 80's and 90's then in the 70's. His voice just became heavier and more powerful as he aged, which is not unusual for a heavy voiced tenor. Heavy voiced tenors are very, very rare, there are lots of Lyric tenors with thin voices. I make vocal range videos, and 85% of Freddie's highest notes are from the 80's and 90's.
      You guys said that news Of The World have too much of a basic sound basic, it is basic perhaps for a Queen album, but as far as composition goes it is not really basic. Queen's compositions are exceptional, which is something that people are starting to study and understand more these days. As I said, I really do understand that that not everyone likes the same music, it would be bad if we all did, and there are lots of different bands and artist to appreciate. Have you guys ever listened to Freddie Mercury's Barcelona album? A lot of people would rank it just as high as their early 70's work, it is an amazing album if you can appreciate more classical sounds. I can appreciate some Bob Dylan but music isn't just always about lyrics, of course it can depend from song to song. Bob Dylan was a great lyricist but his voice was a bit rough.

    MY *QUEEN* ALBUM RANKING
    15. FLASH GORDON : It shouldn't even be considered a studio album. Its a half assed soundtrack that Brian May had to complete by himself because the other 3 had little to no interest in the project. "Flash" is fantastic though.
    14. THE MIRACLE : Half of the album is good, the other half is one big "meh", and the production doesn't help things. " Was It All Worth It?" is a really poignant piece from Mercury, considering he was sick by this point and reflecting back on his life. Albums not great, but it could be worse.
    13. MADE IN HEAVEN : Nothing bad to say about this record, but I don't reach for this one too often. As far as posthumous releases go, this one was put together with a lot of heart, and you hear it. "Too Much Love Will Kill You" and "Mother Love" are the highlights for me.
    12. INNUENDO : Its a mixed bag this one. I don't mind the production, but I feel like it sucked a lot of the dynamics out of the songs. But its not terrible. "Innuendo" (the track) is BRILLIANT. "TWTDOOL" as a single is under appreciated, and "The Show Must Go On" is dramatic and tragic. Not a peak album by any means, but they had peak performances here.
    11. THE WORKS : The "our last album bombed, so let's copy The Game" Album. Ok, its not a total carbon copy of The Game, but it's close. It worked, but it also showed some complacency within the band. Its decent. "It's A Hard Life" is a favorite of mine.
    10. A KIND OF MAGIC : Its better than The Works.
    9. HOT SPACE : Its a Hot Mess, but it's a most glorious hot mess. Songs like "Staying Power" and "Action This Day" worked A LOT better in a live context, versus the studio versions, IMO. "Under Pressure" had been released the year prior as a single, so they totally cheated by including it in this record. 😅 "Cool Cat" is a slow jam. I Love it. "Body Language" is so cringe, its actually hilariously brilliant. This record is definitely NOT boring.
    8. JAZZ : Its pompous. Its outrageous. Its entertaining. Its Queen. I adore how weird and off putting this record is. Also, seriously, how can anyone dislike "Bicycle Race"?
    7. A DAY AT THE RACES : Its " A Night at the Opera " part 2, but more so, its "A Night at the Opera" On STEROIDS. The ambition and risks they took on ANATO are turned up to 10 on this one. "Millionaire Waltz", "Tie Your Mother Down" & "Good Ol Fashioned Lover Boy" are a few of my favorites from this record.
    6. NEWS OF THE WORLD : I really like how dry and raw the production is on this record, in comparison to the records that came before. It has a more live feel and relies less on their brilliant studio trickery, and it showed they could just be a Rock Band if they wanted to. "Get Down Make Love" is raunchy, and "It's Late" is underappreciated.
    5. THE GAME : Its one of their more straight forward and focused records in terms of the songs. You can tell they reigned it in after making "Jazz", and it payed off. " AOBTD" still slaps, the title track is climatic, and "Dragon Attack" contains one of the sickest riffs known to man. Solid album.
    4. A NIGHT AT THE OPERA : Its iconic, but it's not my favorite.
    3. QUEEN II : Its a proggy, regal and most fabulous collection of songs. "White Queen" is spell binding, "Ogre Battle" thrashes, and "March Of The Black Queen" was their proper discovery of vocal layering and would develop farther in their music moving forward. Brilliant Sophomore album.
    2. QUEEN : Even though they didn't have their identity as a band intact, its a most impressive debut. "Liar" "Keep Yourself Alive" "Son And Daughter" & "Modern Times Rock N Roll" ROCK so hard and gives this record a lot of drive. "My Fairy King" & "Great King Rat" are meticulous and invigorating. Yeah, for a debut, this record wastes no time in getting your attention.
    1. SHEER HEART ATTACK: Because "Killer Queen", " Stone Cold Crazy", "In The Lap Of The Gods", " Brighton Rock", "Bring Back That Leroy Brown" and "Now I'm Here".... and I feel like its the first true " Queen" record. Identity intact and all. Its Brilliant.
    Great Episode dudes. Ever consider doing a Album Ranking on SPARKS? GO WATCH "The Sparks Brothers" documentary. You will be well educated in one of the most influential/overlooked bands of the past 50 years. You guys would have a time with that discography.

      Yeah, I don't quite know how to take that song. Is it satirical? Is it the world's worst advice to people suffering from depression? Does Freddie think suicide is like a teenager smoking a cigarette? "Don't try it kids. It's bad for you.". It's existence confuses me.

      News of the World is my favorite too. I don't hate "We Will Rock You" and "We Are The Champions", but I've probably heard them enough times at this point in my life. But, even without those, it's pretty solid. I think this has some of the best deeper cuts on it that the average person doesn't know, like "Sheer Heart Attack", "Spread Your Wings", and "It's Late". "Get Down Make Love" kind of presages the funkier direction they'd take in the '80s.

    I've definitely been more in the camp of knowing Queen only for their hits. They are my son's favourite band (he's 6) and he has that red greatest hits CD. For months he listened to it before bed every single night so I have heard it a lot but lately he has switched to songs about Minecraft so I must say I miss Queen. "We Will Rock You" is his top favourite song, it's fun to see him rock out to it.
    This week I did get to listen to the first two albums and liked them a lot more than I expected. I really was not expecting the first album especially to sound the way it did. So I think I will need to check out a few more of the 70s albums. I am shocked Jason likes Hot Space as much as he does based on the description and what I have heard of it. It's great that you're all always full of surprises lol.

    * Not my favorite band and I'm still not really a fan but the incredible talent here cannot be denied. The Listography boys might cry foul, but I believe I was once again able to overcome my personal tastes and evaluate this music objectively to some extent, based on its merits and how good I think it actually is as opposed to whether or not I would reach for it again.
    * Some might be surprised at my high placement of Flash Gordon. But for me, I was a fan of the movie when I was a kid. So hearing this soundtrack brought back warm and fuzzy memories. It's not something I'm likely to go back to though and the dialogue would probably become tedious upon repeated listens.
    * Jazz was the first album to contain what I consider to be less than good songs.
    * "The Invisible Man" smacks of The Ghostbusters theme. Not great.
    * If the band insisted on that album cover for The Miracle, I would have suggested they call the album something like "Together As One" which would make the whole thing a little less weird (in a bad way).

    Why do many regard "Queen" as one of the greatest bands of all-time(up there with The Beatles)? Easy. They were the complete package and then some. Every member could write and had a hit song. Their discography from the 1st record up til "The Game" is awesome. I'll put it up against any other artist. The consistency is amazing. Freddie Mercury is the greatest rock frontman of all-time. And they were a phenomenal live band. And they did many genres of music well. Now will Kramzer take back his comments? My list:
    15. Flash Gordon (2.5 star BUT "The Hero" rules!)

    Comment # 2: It was refreshing for once to see Night at the Opera not coming at the top of everyone's lists (I also had it at # 6). I've always enjoyed the grimier side of Queen (one of the reasons I love News of the World so much). On Joe's point about never having heard anyone talk about Queen II, Beck Hansen was often heard to rave about it back in the nineties. Slight modification to Kramzer's point that Queen was a band that turned up at the studio with their own individual songs already written and ready to record...in fact that's not quite the case. In a lot of cases, what would be brought to the studio would be song sketches to which everyone would then sweat blood to turn into 'Queen', but the person who brought in the original idea would retain sole authorship. Finally, it's not a kazoo on NATO, Roger did all those parts with his voice!

It´s beyond prog and glam rock, is something enterily new created by Queen, without the vagary and fills that even the most classic previous rock albums had. It has all the excitement Queen can give, straight ahead.

    I skip "Flash Gordon" and "Cosmos Rocks" (I think the Paul Rogers era is better than many give them credit for. I regret not seing them live). With age I think having "favorite" bands or albums varies some but Queen is easily a Top 5 band of all time for me. When digging deeper into the band I had almost all of the albums as a favorite at some point. While they do have some weaker/mediocre songs.. I think their whole catalog is very solid for it's size with many strong moments.
    My Top 14!
    14. Hot Space (1982): The problem for me isn't really the direction (sign of the times) but just how lazy it seemed compared to their earlier catalog. Some things stand out but overall it's a very bland affair that easily could been much better. If they had put half as much time into this as most their other albums I would rate it higher.
    13. Made in Heaven (1995): I think it's hard to understand how big the death of Freddie Mercury became. Offcourse now, sadly, classic rockers are dying by a big amount each year but Freddie's was still bigger. This is bascially some old tracks (the members solow stuff is very overshadowed) with emotional content added. I like most songs one by one to a degree but Kramzér is right that it is too long and the vibe is just not something you return to very often.
    12. The Miracle (1989): I loved this album at one point but I rarely return to it. I think there are plenty good songs but also some obvious fillers. "Party" must be one of the most bland album openers any big band ever done to a decent record. "I Want It All" exists in two different versions and I like both. I would say that I like half the record quite much and the other half I can take or leave.
    11. Innuendo (1991): I really think this album has it's strong moments and what Mercury did under these circumstances were amazing. But I agree with Jason that some songs are sort of "standard".. Not bad, not great.. Just "there". Some think this is like the best Queen album ever. Which is fine. To each their own but to me it's a decent record with a few great tracks.
    10. The Works (1984): Agree with all Jason said. It does seem like Queen stopped trying at this point and their days of exploration were over. They were a huge band and didn't need to prove themselves any more. I think this is a very solid album but not one that really shows what the band was about.
    9. A Kind of Magic (1986): Not a huge fan of the Highlander-movie but I love some of the tracks about the movie and most songs here I do like. Joe is somewhat right that it feels more like a collection of songs than an album per se.. But I still dig it. Probably the post "The Game"-album I return to most often.
    8. News of the World (1977): We are the Champions was one of my first favorite songs ever. Nothing I really need to hear that often these days though. For me this is the record where Queen was a huge band for the first time BUT it also feels like an album with leftovers.. Some tracks here a bit fun and charming but could been a lot better. It feels like they put lots of effort into half of the tracks and the other half not too much. A good album but not a great one.
    7. The Game (1980): A simplified album that sold tons. I like all songs here and it has a great flow but the overall change from hardrock/exprimental rock to soft rock/pop makes it not rank amongst their best albums for me. Very enjoyable but lacks some of the really strong songs.
    6. Jazz (1978): Haha. How can you NOT love "Fat Bottomed Girls". I adore that track! This album feels a bit like a "b-side" collection but it strangely works for. Queen gets to geek out and just do whatever they feel like for the last time. In terms of quality song for song I might put my number 9, 8 and 7 above this but I just have to much fun with it.
    5. Queen (1973): I didn't get this album at all first. I listened to it and had not much good to say. But I did listen to it. Again and again. Now I love it. Especially the tracks 1-6 which I all feel are very underrated in the hardrock community. The later part seems a bit rushed compared. This might be one of the albums, of all time, that grown most on me over the years. From "What's this. Is this even Queen??" to "Turn it to eleven mate!".
    4. A Day at the Races (1976): Queen still putting out great and unique music. I like all tracks here (with maybe the exception of Drowse which is okay) and they get to show all kinds of sides. I would say that the weaker tracks here are on par with the strong tracks of the 80's.
    3. Sheer Heart Attack (1974): Funny that they release this and Queen II in the same year. Two albums I love but very different. This is where the band just does whatever they want. So diverse songs, so raw and just interesting to return to. Many seem to have this as their favorite and I don't blame them. An album where you can find something new after many listens.
    2. Queen II (1974): Taking the debut "Queen" and putting it up a notch. The later side of the LP is amazing and the first part is very strong too. Had a few songs like "The Loser in the End" and "Funny How Love Is" been as good as the rest of the tracks.. This might have been number one. Are you a rocker who doesn't like Queen because of some silly things Mercury did and all the pophits? This is the record you should give a chance. Dark, progressive and just great.
    1. A Night at the Opera (1975): Boring choice? I've heard Bohemian Rhapsody to death but fuck that track LOL. Just such a fun and diverse record. Some songs might be obvious favorites but I like everything here. For me? Queen and Led Zeppelin were probably the biggest "I never know music/rock could go so many places"-bands for me and while Queen influenced so many bands.. Nothing really sounds like this to this day.
    The Top 4 is very close for me. Sort of like the pre-Graffiti Led Zeppelin albums, Deep Purple Mark II, Pink Floyds Dark Side to Animals or something like that. Just a great run of albums. I like so many of their songs.. The only one that surprise even me that I almost hate is... "Get Down, Make Love" from News of the World. I like progressive rock a lot more today than when I discovered Queen. Love all their other progressive moments but this is just such a drag for me. I have no idea how they played it so much live.

      Agree with Kramzér on one something sort of: What if they waited just a little bit with "Sheer Heart Attack" and followed Queen II with Queen III. Another album in that darker and more progressive style? Could been absolutely amazing!

    Tomorrow's video will be much more fun. I have always found Queen to be a band with a lot of great, great songs, but few good records and no great records. I can remember the first time I heard Bohemian Rhapsody, and it totally blew my mind. I went out the next day and bought A Night at the Opera, and pretty much enjoyed most of it. But everything since that time has been a disappointment. A Day at the Races was a Tormato/Love Beach level disappointment. Others less so (except Flash Gordon, which is wholly unlistenable).

      For my money, Steely Dan is a better band than Queen. But the rest of the world doesn't see it that way (i.e. Queen is far more popular than Steely Dan.) Part of it might be that Steely Dan's music is so jazzy. Music with a heavy jazz influence just doesn't seem to travel overseas as well as more conventional pop music does.

    Queen aren't overrated. Just objectively. For all their success, they don't get credit for how wildly inventive they were on their 70s albums as critics have always hated them. Plus, how many bands went from prog epics to topping the R&B chart in 5 years? Its really bizarre. And then right after that do a synth driven score for a sci movie. And in the middle of it all heavy metal and campy music hall.
    Also, Led Zep are the most overrated band ever. Proper snoozefest. Fight me.

    Ahh Queen 👑 How many albums had I consumed properly before this since birth? A mere 5☺️. How. Very. Dare. You! I say to myself. My list....
    15 Made In Heaven 5.5/10 ok You Don't Fool Me always hooked me....like a club floor remix should, but for understandable reasons this relies alot on over dubbed synths sadly to its detriment....perhaps going overboard...a more fun dance record remixing these riffs would've been more exciting. I Was Born To Love You Onwards is good Queen though...
    14 Flash Gordon 6/10 now I love the film and the soundtrack holds up well. It does work as whole listen and whilst there are some lovely similarities with synth work to Vangelis I don't rate this as highly as say Blade Runner for example or indeed Queens work on Highlander (Its A Kind Of Magic),
    13 Hot Space 7/10 Dancer and other tracks are as funky as Scary Monsters. Sounds great this album. Just not enough went into the funky songs craftwise for me 1st half. 2nd half rock ballads are fab.
    12 The Miracle 7/10 interesting start with two wild rocking numbers that build up to the classy title track. This album is better than I'd heard it was....by miles! Really enjoyed heavier first half. Rain Must Fall does stop the momentum...a bit of 80s cheese hangover, but this is Queen so it's never boring even when there's a dip through to albums end where Was It All Worth It feels like Queen being a tad overly nostalgic lyrically.
    11 The Game 7.5/10 the greatest surprise of first 8 albums. The first 3 songs are groove classics. Amazing switch up on this album from the previous. I Need Your Loving is fine and while I love many John Deacon penned songs, this one feels like a calming light interlude on the album instead of a song that could've built on the exciting openers and taken the listener into utter utter dilerium...a missed opportunity there perhaps...and the tail of the album dips even tho Save Me is great at the end!
    10 It's A Kind Of Magic 8/10 I've loved this album the longest. I think most every song is a cracker. Whilst it may suffer a little from post new wave/cheesy 80s moments I think the brilliant rock, synth, singing is all brimming with heart. Considering it's mostly film soundtrack/themes inspired for Highlander....it's amazing. But this time not at expense of composing some more all time great songs.
    9 Jazz 8.5/10 listening to Queen albums in release order really helps you feel where Queen make great jumps with their songwriting and experimental scope. Jazz is very much a shock to the system from the start...in a good way. Eclectic middle east meets middle west wit 1st half then hints of 50s retro rockabilly balladry, this is Queen curtailing commercial ambition somewhat and keeping their integrity really well. Pristine production...just not enough epic omg! to be a favourite.
    8 News Of The World 8.5/10 VGood to Excellent album .... harder rocknroll and then soul/ blues 2nd half but also signs of move towards bigger sound. Their celebrity is officially affecting their subject matter but that's just Freddy- tastic as far as my taste is concerned. Contains classic songs yes but Id argue musically a bit jumpy and not enough Freddie makes it awkward as a whole listen.
    7 The Works 9/10 one thing is clear from the go here, the importance of Freddies piano...that combined with early electronic experiments honed from last few albums serves them so so well on this album throughout. Radio Ga Ga is on its own as their best ever opener. Here they are heavier and show they are now evolving freely but crafting great songs consistently once more.
    6 Innuendo 9.5/10 Still one of my favourites punctuated by 4 all time top ever Queen songs and amazing back to original Queen style folky world music experimental flows...the 2nd album I bought on tape as a 10 year old after A Kind of Magic....this record was a miracle considering Freddie's health...for me their best after first 5....but then raw emotion perhaps, saying goodbye the way he wanted... added a rich poignancy to their last hoorah together. Anyone dissing Delilah...that was his cat goodbye ☺️🙀. The light moment in their darkest♥️♥️♥️♥️,
    5 A Night At The Opera 9.5/10 Lazing on a S Afternoon, Good Co. and Seaside R feel like Beatles/George Formby numbers. First half of album is mixed till Your MBF then BR and The P Song makes the album bloody good overall.
    4 A Day At The Races 10/10 Brilliant album throughout. Understated excellence. Beach Boys again screams out at you but oh my how this album grows and blossoms. White Man really caught my attention. But so did the whole record. Great writing.
    3 Sheer Heart Attack 10/10 Killer Queen is the first popular song to appear in 3 albums, but at least it's clear they don't just do great songs by this point as they had constructed their 3rd amazing album in a row. This has a heavier feel to it overall but great contrasts abound and they really push the glam more than the rock too. Signs here for me that their signature sounds could also feel like a gimmick when overused if not careful, but at this stage their more experimental almost Beach Boys doing prog moments make this flow brilliantly.
    2 Queen 10/10🏆, Keep Yourself Alive opens up Queens legendary status with such an ace base line. This album is brilliantly performed, produced, rocks, rolls and makes a statement. The hints of glam are not over egged but establishes Queen as an incredibly talented force on the rock scene at the time. The album is a great vastly underrated, exquisite gem of a ride and is way too short, varied with ballads, rock, sillyness and glam at its very best....not my fave debut album of all time but def in top 20. Jesus could've let the album down, but that rawer operatic chaotic feel abounds.
    1 Queen II 10/10 🏆🏆 the first hints of that Queen Brian May anthemic guitar whine style from the get go intro then Father To Son nails the start. Sophomore albums don't get better than this. A slightly more disciplined refined Queen than debut. But I can't listen to one without the other. So well matched they feel like double album...sod it. That's what they are.
    Conclusion....this was as fabulous a discography to do as the likes of Sabbath and Maiden possibly more so because I struggled to not be entertained throughout and my song list and comments are by far the longest of all the bands we've ever done on Listography. Can't think of many songs marked between 6 or 7.5/10....most were 8s+...That in itself is worthy of legendary status. But not to exaggerate 13 of 15 albums were sheer pleasure from beginning to end. Great great band who were extremely consistently great song writers who never stopped entertaining ( Platinum collection aside, those 5 albums I knew properly b4 doing this...Queen, Queen II, A Night At The Opera, It's A Kind of Magic-which was my 1st Queen album bought back in 1989! - and Innuendo)...don't make my mistake. Get to all of it!! Now!♥️♥️♥️
