    DreamWorks is at it again with yet another trailer: Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken! And it is spicy! Going for a direct dig at Disney just like the studio's origins. It's clearly a parody of the mermaid we've seen in The Little Mermaid and media in general with a new coming-of-age story about how krakens are the real good guys. Featuring an evil Ariel and all! I'm intrigued by this classic fairytale trope subvertion, but at the same time, the more I look into this trailer, the less I see looking back at me. Is this just another shallow piece that's suddenly releasing in 3 months time, or is this DreamWorks next big masterpiece that'll scar Disney Animation for years...?

    I think 20s belong to DreamWorks, Illumination, and Skydance. Disney is way too uptight and way too stuck in its own greed to do something to prevent it. It's also interesting to see Walt Disney Co. making a full circle. If it wasn't for Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm they wouldn't be nearly as successful as they are nowadays.
    Also, from what I remember, everytime this company is struggling; execs are getting scared and starts to rely on "good old classics" or "good old Disney movies" to remind audience what an amazing company they are. Eisner, when he was still around, knew that Disney was struggling while facing challenges like potential hostile takeover. So... guess what? Yeah, they decided that the best way to get out of that situation was to rely on remakes/sequels and live action movies (although, it's worth noting it wasn't to the same extent as modern Disney.) Some famous quotes from Disney execs themselves when Disney company back in 1983/4 was almost on its knees: “How could this be happening, we’re Disney!” and “You can’t dismantle the House of the Mouse, we’re an American institution!”
    And you may chuckle upon seeing these quotes, but the moden Walt Disney Co. is still pretty much acting like this.

      @@megablueflash1816 like I said Spider-Verse had cool animation which seriously impressed me; you don’t see something like that every year. Very inventive.
      I hated HTTYD when I saw it in theaters, I thought the character designs were wretched and the story was painfully predictable.
      I really wanted to like Soul, I’m a huge music fan, but I felt it was used as a plot device by people who didn’t understand it one bit, there wasn’t even a hint of soul music, and I fundamentally disagreed with the film’s thesis that eating food or “just living” could be somebody’s calling in life. Also when he finally does the big performance and it’s not what he really wanted? I guess jazz musicians are just confused about their passion? I enjoyed the first 15 minutes of setup depicting the man’s life as a music teacher with dreams, but as soon as the story got going it started fumbling in my eyes.
      Emperor’s New Groove never held much interest for me, in the same vein as Shrek but at least the animation’s not a garbage dump and if I recall the jokes are funny. If they wanted to have a black live-action Disney princess, they could have remade The Princess and the Frog. Tiana is right there! But no, they decided to blackwash a princess who has RGB red hair, then attempted to keep that red hair by nerfing it to ginger-brown because the original color would have looked terrible on the poor actress, only for it to still look bad on her. So here's the thing: It's like you said. Why are they already showing us the final battle? Does anyone else feel like they're showing way too much for an original trailer? Could the plot really be that simple, that they're already showing us exactly how the 3rd act is gonna go down? OR could it be that Dreamworks is hiding something? Maybe this story is gonna end up being about more than just: "Kraken = good, Mermaids = bad." What if they're gonna pull a switcheroo on us and give Chelsea a redemption story? Maybe have the two of them have to work together to stop an even bigger threat? Maybe that threat is Humans? Maybe it's Grandma? Or maybe there's some kind of natural disaster their giant Kaiju fighting causes, that they have to find a way to stop? I mean, in a world where every animated movie has to have a twist villain, a twist hero, a story where the real villain is life or familly drama, or any combination of the three, AND where spoilers are practically considered punishable by death, are we really to believe this one trailer, represents the entirety of the movie? I personally don't care for the new Indiana Jones movie, I think it's budget will determine its success, if the budget is like it was for the bad guys and puss in boots, which was somewhere around 70 to 80 million for bad guys and around 90 million for puss in boots, I feel it could do well. Not to mention, since to my knowledge that barbie film is not animated, the next BIG animated firm after it releases is TMNT: Mutant Mayhem, which doesn't come out until a month after it releases, so it doesn't have any real competition in terms of family friendly films

    I feel like it is safe enough to see if they want to infest in it, or not, if it flops, this will most likely be a one-off movie, but if it doesn't there is still enough room to make more.
    Now do I think the marketing, and the trailer could have been better, yes. Most definitely yes. Especially when we are talking about the trailer. The thing about is that... it seems to show just the beginning, and the climax, leaving a lot of room for the middle, and this is what I want to see the most, basically how will she manage to balance her life out, as far as I remember she has her small group of friends? but somebody needs to check me on that, and I would love to see their dynamic, and I feel like this would be the actual highlight of the movie... You know, exploring how her little secret altered her life, and if she will tell it to anyone before she will have to revil it to everyone, if they focus more on that rather then her conflict with Ariel, which seems to be the case, then I treat it as just something that is supposed to get us hooked, and nothing else.
    I mean what would you rather put in a trailer with this premis when you have just three months to it's release date, a few conversation between friends, or the twist the movie pulls on the fairy tale word?

    • @YourMomsAltAccount
      @YourMomsAltAccount ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Interesting theories I've heard is that the trailer is actually misleading us and defying our expectations, however in reality the "climax" is much earlier then we realize and that the rest of the movie is the protagonist becoming the exact person the Mermaid was, allowing the praise to get to their head. It'd be so interesting to see if that's how the plot goes.

  • @Lexivor

I wished they released a teaser before Puss in Boots The Last Wish to get some hype for the movie. I am questioning why they didn’t show the trailer before the Super Mario Bros. Movie because one, that would definitely give it more attention playing before the biggest opening for an animated film after Covid and two, they’re both being produced by Universal that owns both DreamWorks and Illumination. While I am worried that this trailer spoiled the plot, Dreamworks movies, whether they're masterpieces or Boss Baby, always have some kind of emotional core and this trailer didn't show it so that gives me some hope.

    Honestly, the animation style is kinda triggering in these modern animated movies at this point, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will always be among my top favorites, and it did so well because it actually tried something new for style. We get the same polished simplified glossy humanoid forms as in Turning Red, A Strange World, Soul, Trolls, etc. It's like movies started caring less about the art style so much than they do about the actual story these days. Puss in Boots was actually entertaining, both engaging and a spectacle to look at both from the art style and the story. Any age group could watch it, but these are just meant for a younger audience that parents have to agonizingly sit-though an hour in the theatre😆
    DreamWorks is still better than Disney though! They try new stuff when Disney is just a live-action remake after remake, and they're wondering off into forbidden territory😂

    5:11 then you would absolutely love the show Once Upon a Time. Not only does it have unique twists on classic characters i.e Snow White is a badass with a bow and expert tracker, Red Riding Hood is the Big Bad Wolf, Rumplestiltskin is literally referred to as The Dark One an immortal all powerful force of evil rather than a goofy imp, and the Evil Queen who cursed everyone to live in our world without magic unknowingly adopts the son of Snow Whites daughter and this all is just established within the very first few episodes.
    Later seasons even bring in characters and locations from stuff such as Peter Pan, Frozen *ugh*, 101 Dalmatians, Aladdin, and Hercules, classics like The Wizard of Oz, Frankenstein, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Camelot, and Alice in Wonderland.
