  • I made a quick/short trip up to our Alaska Off Grid Homestead to solve a couple of minor issues with the back-up generator that reared their ugly not long before the solstice after the first two of three snow storms dropped nearly 4 feet of snow on our access road, then the temperatures dropped down around -30*F for a couple of days, with the rest of the week being around -15*F on average.
The system itself was fine and performing admirably other than the birch trees I love so much hindering output performance, but the really cold temperatures cripples the Yamaha EF7200DE generator's starter battery and stiffened up the rubber primer bulb check valve enough that the generator could not get the fuel feed via gravity that it truly needed. This video shows how those issues were solved and a couple other modifications that I made to the generator last fall to help it run better and more reliably when the temperatures drop down to bone shattering low temperatures.
Work started immediately cutting open the access road with our Bobcat T190 and it's dirt bucket. I didn't get to video any of this since I was on a time crunch in order to get the truck out of the shop. This also turned into a Bobcat repair when it smoked the drive belt in the middle of the big hill while digging it out. That, or most of it, made it to video.
I also got to pick up a long awaited surprise that I have been saving for, and play around "testing" an old relic Lincoln Electric Idealarc 250 TIG/STICK welder for the first time in the shop.
All in all it was a short, hectic, and great trip! Dark and cold, but still preferred over suburban life in Hawaii for me!

Here are a few links to things I have found very helpful or useful that were mentioned in this video:
    atkinsonelectronics.com/gscm-mini-60hz-usa-canada/? - Atkinson GSCM-mini generator start control
genexhaust.com/ - Remote exhaust kits and parts to setup custom exhaust to run your generator indoors and have the exhaust exit safely outdoors.
rubbertracksamerica.com/ - source for aftermarket skid steer tracks. The zigzag pattern have proven to be great in the snow, mud, sand, smooth gravel on our property.

I sure hope so too! Slow and steady is fine with me though as well. Still lots of learning to do.
