We Made An Off-Grid Shop Window From Trash!
We finally managed to get one of our DIY shop windows assembled and installed for our Alaskan off-grid homestead shop building using custom final frames to put the triple pane glass units from left over freezer glass doors into. Magic Metals in Wasilla, AK., a local sheet metal shop, made up some sill plate trim in short notice for us that not only worked perfectly for the proof of concept installation but also matched the paint nearly perfect with one of their stock colors!
The rough opening frames are made from left over concrete form 2 x 12's, the majority of the trim used was left over from the initial building sheet metal package and the glass units themselves were salvaged from walk-in freezer glass doors that were going to be disposed of.
This idea for a project let me essentially turn trash into treasure and end up with very strong, insulated shop picture windows for a fraction of the cost to buy ones pre-made that would be similar to them. Now we just need to assemble and install five more for the shop itself, then install the six awning style windows that I ordered to match these as close as possible since I couldn't get operable frames large enough to accept these glass door glazing units.
When all is said and done we will have a very nice row of 29" tall windows that will wrap around the building from the SE corner to the NW corner letting in ample amounts of light where we will want and need it.

Off Grid Power for 5hp Air Compressor Success!

Our Rolair 60 gallon air compressor would trip our Sol-Ark off grid solar power system off when trying to start. In order to solve this I needed to come up with a way to soft start it so that I will be able to use it for the spray foam machine that will be used to insulate the shop building in Wasilla Alaska. Question, what am I not seeing for running a AC non VFD motor with a VFD drive? Also did you add a shaft grounding ring to your motor?

    • @VowellVentures
      @VowellVentures 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're not missing anything at all. We have run non "VFD spec" motors for decades with VFD's (just not on single phase) with no problem. The biggest thing that I know of is to make sure the size and type are correct for the intended use. As for a shaft ground ring, nope.. I added nothing to the motor, just connected to the factory ground on it, the inverter and the ground bar in the panel which is grounded to the rod for the panel. I actually have a ground rod at both panels in the building and tied them together since my ground is mostly rock and sand. VFD spec motors tend to mostly have heavier insulation on the windings and the ground rings is my understanding, but honestly a vfd can a three phase motor without them just fine. It's just a matter of the motor may fail sooner than without it, but we haven't seen it happen when we have put vfd's on non vfd spec motors. I am sure it has somewhere under some condition though. I have no doubt that the VFD I am using is not the "best" quality, or more durable for what I want to use it for, but it was affordable, easy to get quickly and would answer questions for me. Since it's on the air compressor it also doesn't need to run continuously either and will have cycle time. The real test will be when I want to run the foam machine and it either needs to run for longer duration or cycle more frequently. Even then I will take breaks between the sets of barrels to let the various equipment (myself included) rest and cool off a bit.

    adding 1-2 auto transformers should do the trick. I have a 5k auto transformer in my system. This is so if my central air and everything turns on same time it helps my 2 5k inverters with the loads. For shops I would have went with Snyder inverters.

    • @VowellVentures
      @VowellVentures 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the idea about auto transformers, hadn't even thought of them. Most my experience is with VFD's so I went with what I am the most familiar with, though I hadn't used one to convert from single to three phase until this project. As for the brand, I figured quick and cheap to test. If/when it fails I can swap to a better, or higher quality one. Since I am not there anywhere near as much as I want to be yet, the cheaper ones work for proof of concept and to get things working for now while leaving some money in the account to put towards concrete and foam resin to finish off the main building.. hopefully next summer if I can get enough done this season. Whoops.. you were referencing the Sol-Ark, not VFD with the Snyder recommendation. I have loved the Sol-Ark's overall and they actually have been great at handling everything I have needed up until this air compressor. I had an Outback Radian prior but swapped it with my father so he could have two and I could pair up the Sol-Arks. They work really well for my needs overall. Excellent customer service as well, at least when I have called with ideas/questions to run by them.

    • @dc1544
      @dc1544 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@VowellVentures Yeah inverters that do not have transformers in them are mainly missing the surge power unless you really oversize your system. I myself did the research and Growatt 5k inverters and a auto transformer was the way to go. I could do 3 phase with mine if I add 1 more inverter but I do not power a garage with compressors. Auto transformers are not real expensive. you would need 2 at around $800 total.

    • @VowellVentures
      @VowellVentures 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Sol-Arks have a pretty good surge power on them overall, just not a long enough duration and because of that don't like hard starting motors which I expected and figured I would end up working around. The have handled other heavy loads fine, just not this 5hp air compressor which to be honest, I didn't really expect it to just hoped it would. I also didn't expect to need this new air compressor as soon as I did either, so I thought I had time to finish my system. But when I finally found the specifications of the foam rig I have it became very apparent I screwed up when I bought my gas compressor and got one too small. Then it became time to figure out a work around solutions. All part of off grid and homesteading I suppose. My place is a bit.. larger and "different" than most for off-grid though, part of the challenge that makes it fun. I want a nice shop where I can think and putter to my hearts content and (with in reason) be able to run all kinds of fabrication tools for various ideas I have. I'll just stick our house in the back 3rd of it and call it good! Later I hope to extend the shop enough to make up for the space lost to the house too. I'll check out the auto transformers though, I haven't played with them or even thought of them to help with surge/in rush loads. Great idea actually. Thank you for the suggestion!

      @TdrSld 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@VowellVentures I wonder how the EG-4's would do, seeing as they have stupid long high surge run times. EG-'s 18KpV has PEAK POWER (SURGE CAPACITY) w/ PV: 14700W (10 min), 15500W (5 min), W/O PV: 13500W (10 min) for just one unit.

    • @VowellVentures
      @VowellVentures 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hadn't heard of that inverter setup so I looked it up. Appears to have a lot of similarities to the Sol-Ark I am using. I really like these hybrid units overall. I see this for the EG-4 12K version, "Peak Power: .05s = 16kW, 1s = 12kW, 1min = 10kW, 12min = 8.8kW", it looks like two paralleled like mine are would start most anything just fine, still debatable for something as hard to start as a large air compressor. With the setup I put together I think I could actually use that same VFD on a 7.5hp air compressor if I ever decided to go bigger if Rolair dies on me someday. It's great seeing the solar technology advancing from all angles so rapidly! Gives a piece of mind that as the property grows, I can have the system grow with it and be able to use more and more efficient equipment. Equipment that gives more wattage per foot, takes up less space, lighter and easier to handle.. any or all of the above are great benefits to the technology advancing so quickly!

I have you 7224 snow blower as well and took delivery just in time to test in on some of the most rotten, wet, slushy snow you could imagine early last May. It was great as well, only complaint had mostly to do with operator error actually, and that was the powder coating peeled off the auger and edges of the chute, but in fairness.. a lot more gravel, sand, and nastiness was getting sent through it than probably should have. Performance wise though, it was great on my T190 "high flow"(but not really compared to other brands) machine. It was still able to throw the slop an easy 20+ feet, I just had to be patient and not ram the 12-15" mess down its throat to quickly! You did a very good job on that pump. I had an 88 Dodge Dakota with the V6 and I changed out the power steering pump it leaked worst than my old one did. Took it back got another one, and it worked fine and no leaks. When I put the Caddy engine in the Chevy I had 2 complete vehicles, that made life much easier. I used a the components from the Caddy, , plus the radiator. When I changed the oil pan, I also replaced the timing chain/gears. Water pump, and the thermostat. I wish I could have rebuilt it, and added an Edelbrock intake, I would have used the Q jet carburetor which I did as it was. I agree the Caddy engine is a good high Torque engine. I seen where Car Craft magazine did a build up on a 75 500, they ran it on an engine dyno all stock, except for the carburetor, they used a Holly. It put out 350 horsepower, and 380 pound feet Torque. The factory rated it at 190 horsepower and 370 Torque, if I remember correctly. Amazing what no pollution controls, and no mufflers can do

      This truck has the '71 500 mated to '76 TH400 to get the RWD needed, swapped the 14" tail shaft to a 4" Chevy one and hung a Gear Vendors splitter on the back of it. Worked out really well overall, but I geared the truck to the cam's efficiency instead of comfy highway, efficient driving. 3.73 in the rear with 30" tire, should have setup 3.42 or so to let the engine sleep when cruising. That said though, when towing it has no idea there is a load behind it regardless of the weight it seems! 🤣 Just eats more fuel than it needs too, oh... the 2200 rpm converter doesn't help either, but does make it entertaining on stop light! 😈

      @@VowellVentures Now that's very interesting, you seem to really understand the workings of the engine and gears, plus tire size. They all make a difference to overall gearing. Most people don't understand the difference a tire can make, on overall gearing. A taller tire makes gearing faster, or slows the engine RPM for the same speed. I changed tires on a big truck from a low profile 22.5, to a tall 11R24.5 approximately a 6 inch taller tire, and my top speed at 2100 RPM from 72 MPH TO 76 MPH. With 3.55 gears . I would love to swap a 7.3L IH diesel into the dump truck to use with the twin gear boxes if I can get them to work nicely.. going to be another project/video for that.. but have no desire to reset the gear ratio's in the twin 30,000# axles to work with the diesel's rpm range! LOL Almost leaning towards a Caddy swap into it in place of the tall deck 427 since I can make more torque with a closer similarity in rpm range, but would end up needing to swap to a TH400 setup instead of the twin sticks. I think the TH400 in Ol' Ugly with the GV behind it would take the abuse the way it's built and I do have a spare I can freshen up to use as well. But then the dump truck would lose its primary anti-theft device since most people can't drive a single stick manual let alone a twin stick! LOL Hell.. I can't even drive that thing well yet but in my defense, both gear boxes have seen a lot of better days! Keep an eye on the channel, while it is primarily supposed to be about the homestead/shopstead, there seems to be an awful lot of "old iron" repair and modification going on.. more than actual progress on the main project itself! It took a while to learn, but I came to the realization that if it only had the 5 speed, that engine would have a lot of problems trying to move . It was a straight truck, a slurry truck. It had 2 tanks 500 gallons each. One for water, one for asphalt oil. ( emulsified, so it would mix with water) and a hopper for a combination of small rocks and sand. I was interested when you said you have a Chevy pickup with a 500 Caddy. I had a 77 Chevy, Heavy Half, long bed I put a 75 Caddy with the TH400 transmission. I took the oil pan off an 80 model Eldorado with the oil pickup tube and main bearing stud ( for the oil pickup tube support ) made some simple motor mount brackets from 3/8 thick flat mild steel. Bolted to the cross member, and used 3 inch channel iron for the transmission cross member. Had to shorten the Chevy drive shaft by 5 1/2 inches. Drove it without any exhaust did have exhaust manifolds, to a muffler shop, had them put a complete 2 1/2 inch duel exhaust on. Well, what they did was run 2 1/4 from the manifolds to under the body then stepped it up to 2 1/2 used 2 turbo style mufflers, then pipes out to the rear bumper. Mine was all stock and I got 16 MPG on highway, ( better than the Chevy 350) . I loaded it up with firewood, I measured the bumper height empty, and loaded. The rear bumper was 6 inches lower and the front bumper was 4 inches lower. Don't know how much weight that was, all I can say, is it pulled just as good loaded as it did empty. Loved that truck. 😊

The torque output stock was insane!!! There is a video on my channel showing my truck, dubbed Ol' Ugly that shows my setup indirectly while I fight a power steering pump issue on it. Near the end of it I fire it up to check and.. well.. it's not quiet! LOL The '71 500 in it is .030" over bored to 507cid, MTS#10 cam, roughly 10:1 compression, Edelbrock manifold, Fast EZEfi v1 fuel injection (best mod EVER for it). The exhaust is log manifold to a 2 1/2" Y pipe I built, then single 3" through SpinTech 3000 series muffler. The truck is my pride and joy, though it's the second version I have built. It will end up being shipped to the homestead at some point where I can build a tube chassis for it and retire it to a life of drag racing on occasion. I'll end up building a third version first though by converting my 2000 K3500 in the background of various videos posted. Thanks for sharing about your truck!!! I love reading about other peoples projects, especially ones that have Caddy swaps in them!

    Just came across this informative video, I have a 1968 all original mint single axle C-50 with a freshly rebuilt 292L 4spd with 2spd rear end, it is a one owner large farm truck with a 22' tilting grain body and I am going to restore it and repowering it with a 4-53T Detroit Diesel as that was a option in 1968 (4-53N) would like to install a M-35A1 rear tandem bogey on it but still doing the math on the drive train, probably will need to install a 3spd auxiliary transmission in it what do you think of this idea?

    • @VowellVentures
      @VowellVentures ปีที่แล้ว

      To be completely honest, I am a rank newbie to world of these trucks, and most equipment in general. That said I am a sucker for swaps in general, and have done a number of them in cars and normal pickups with. This truck and my other "dead to others" equipment have been a (usually) fun learning experience so far. I vote that if you can get your hands on the donors you need, and get them to fit.. if for nothing else than fun and smiles.. do it, and enjoy every moment of it! I'll keep puttering on this truck as well, hopefully I can get to cleaning up the body and box while slowing making it road worthy along the way. These trucks at a local car show could be a lot of fun I would think!

    Hey boss. Find a 454 parts engine. Pull the crank, get some 6.535 rods and some 1.64 compression height pistons. Build a 454 tall deck. Should get around 500tq at 1800 rpm. Especially with peanut port heads and the static compression of 10.5:1

      @@VowellVentures aux boxes are notorious for becoming soup bowls. Years of winter and summer condensation gets inside of them and causes rust, bearing failure and gear teeth to become bluetooth. Bet if you cracked the drain plug on your aux box you'd see 2 gallons of water before you'd see oil. Depending on the last time it was serviced. Drain it and open the service plate. If you see rust? And if nothing metal comes out in the drain? Fill the box with kerosene and let it soak for a couple of days. Put some PB blaster on the linkage and see if it brakes free. Hopefully the aux box won't need much more than that. If it does? It gets expensive.
