Andrei Kirilenko: The Career of AK-47! Russia’s Greatest Weapon… On the Basketball Court | FPP

  • He was the definition of a positionless player; long and lanky with the quickness and agility to defend on the perimiter, yet also the timing and instinct to defend down low if he had to. Andrei Kirilenko is arguably the greatest Russian Basketball Player of all time, and without a doubt had the greatest NBA career of any Russian born player up to this point. He was a pro from his mid teens in Russia, playing with SPARTAK St. Petersburg and CSKA Moscow, before joining the John Stockton and Karl Malone led Utah Jazz in the early 2000s. Once they were gone, he took the reigns of the team and put together a brief but incredible stretch where he was a perennial Defensive Player of the Year Candidate and even an MVP candidate one year. But as the Jazz filled out their roster with guys like Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer, Kirilenko struggled to find his fit and had some conflict with Jerry Sloan, up to the point where Kirilenko almost left the NBA altogether. But a move to the bench allowed Kirilenko to rediscover his love for the game and play the free defensive style that he loved. He returned to Russia during the 2012 lockout and would even bring the country an Olympic Bronze Medal in teh 2012 London Summer Olympics. When he returned to the NBA, he was no longer a member of the Jazz and would spend a year with the Kevin Love led Minnesota Timberwolves then a little over a year with the Brooklyn Nets featuring Williams, Joe Johnson, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. Rightfully so, his last time playing professional basketball was in Russia, and soon after he was done playing he became the president of the Russian Basketball Federation, which seems appropriate, as while there are many great and well known players in Russia, the international face for Russian Basketball is Andrei Kirilenko.

I wouldn’t say Sloan didn’t know what to do with him, more like he was just a very stubborn old man. His biggest problem was always his lack of a consistent 3 point shot which would have made him a star. I agree he would put up better numbers today just based on the pace of the game and the fact he could even play C today.

    The Best Nickname ever.
He was a good defender though those Jazz teams with him were sneaky good. Remember them taking down the We Believe Warriors I was sad as a fan when the Dubs lost the series because I wanted them to go all the way as they had become the team that I cheer for to this day.
But back to AK what an underrated player.

AK-47, one of my favorite wing players. He was truly the archetype of a do-it all forward who can shoot, pass, and play great defense. I always felt that 02-03 Jazz team was super underrated as you still had Malone and Stockton putting up good numbers as experienced vets along with Harpring and Kirilenko as a great tandem on the wings. Maybe not championship contenders, but man were they fun to watch.
