- Russia has launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, triggering the largest European war since 1945.
But this conflict has been over a decade in the making.
Here’s why Russia is invading Ukraine.

What a difference a year makes. $100B later and....nothing to show for it. Well on its way to being an even larger moneypit than Iraq.
Yep. And don't forget the other money pit: Afghanistan. Sickening.
Except we’re not sending money in most part, we’re sending equipment that’s WORTH that money. Equipment that if anything, we save money on maintenance from.
At least $26B has been sent. I believe the overalal number is higher closer to $100B which means even more cash.@@juicedbeetlejuice4572
The problem is that the West never sent equipment that were meant to help Ukraine to actually win but only to hold up Russian advancement momentarily. When Ukraine asked for the Leopard tanks for example the minefields weren't there in the south. By the time Germany allowed the Leopards the Russians already built out their defensive lines and Surprise-surprise! no tank can get through a mile deep minefield. The same with long range artillery, air defense, ATACMS, fighter jets.
Yeah, western politicians let Ukraine down then blame them for the little success. Disgusting.
I wouldn't say nothing to show for it. Russias tank army is basically gone, they embarrassed themselves time and time again with their corruption and poor tactics, and they have shown their true colors in terms of war crimes. We've seen the Ukrainian ingenuity and determination - imagine what they could achieve were they given what the Afghans wasted for nothing. Ukrainians want to be like us and are fighting hard for it, the Afghans and Iraqis never really gave a shit.
Thanks again for another rational, calm explanation. Especially appreciate the acknowledgement of all the people trapped in between the politicians with no voice.
You forgot to mention how Ukraine was trying to get NATO in there, and Russia not wanting that
Russia also doesn't want any thoughts of a Western style democracy inside Russia (thus locking up Alexei Navalny) or near it's borders. Looks like Russia is internally on the verge of declaring martial law too!
Yeah that's kind of a big part of it...
You forgot to mention that Ukraine handed over 4000 nuclear weapons stationed in Ukraine to Russia because the United States of America and Great Britain gave them security assurances. The West cannot back down now. This war isn't just about Ukraines security and their right to live as a free nation. It has far reaching security consequences for the whole region, including already NATO member states.
Yeah he missed a lot, but the vid is a year old.
that's part of russian propaganda, russia's planned to take control over ukraine for long time
You said after a month
And TH-cam just recommended me after 14 months 😂
That profile picture lmao
Nice to hear one overview of Ukrainian history without blatant lies and propaganda.
Thank you so much brother
That should teach anyone to believe in treaties... Russia, UK and US signed a treaty guaranteeing Ukraine's territorial integrity if Ukraine would give up her nukes (1994?)
And Ukraine signed it and promised not to try to join NATO.. nor anything like the EU and not have NATO weapons in the country either, it was Ukraine and NATO that broke the accords.... And this all started in 1996 with Clinton adding NATO members
@o11k says it Budapest memorandum 1994
2014 revolution left the chat:
curiously, Putin's perspective on things has been quite consistent,
"the West's perspective" is describe very shallowly, while Freitas' opinion does not seem to be expressed.
I wonder how much Nick cared about the sovereignty of Afghanistan and Iraq while he was deployed there with the military?
@@Mortablunt
Try to set aside your hatred for America, and think rationally instead.
@@Mortablunt Could say the same about Chechnya
@@dukeofwolves1139 Chechnya was never a sovereign country ever. It has been legally part of Russia ever since it was ceeded by treaty from the Ottoman Empire.
You are missing natos violation of the treaty with the soviet union which allowed Germany to be reunited in exchange nato promised not to expand into the former soviet block states. We violated that. Ukraine is critical to maintain Russias nuclear deterant against the West.
UKraine is NOT a member of NATO.
There is no such treaty. This is widely spread misinformation
I'll pay you $1000 if you can name this treaty. You can't. It doesn't exist.
Look it up yourself if you are not aware. The accord signed with boring yeltsin after the dissolution of the societ union.
@@dennysnowden9418 Don't you want the money? Name and quote the treaty.
Here's an example of how to name and quote treaties. From the Budapest Memorandum of 1994: "The Russian Federation [...] reaffirm their commitment to respect the independence and sovereignty and existing borders of Ukraine". Now you try it :)
Gonna have to disagree with this one
Anything in particular you disagree with?
@@Tjalve70 Russia is acting defensively in interest of it's border security measures with NATO. And NATO is in violation of it's 1000 mile agreement with Russia as it stands already. Ukraine discussions about potentially joining NATO deserve retaliation if I were Putin too.
@@gavinfann7041 Please name that mythical 1000 mile treaty. I think you have fallen victim to Russian propaganda on that one.
I do agree that Russia is acting defensively due to NATO's expansion. And it's stupid of NATO not to consider the obvious threat they are posing to Russia. But there is no treaty or agreement saying that NATO can't expand.
So while I won't say that your points are completely invalid, you are not correct. And nothing that you mention is in conflict with what this video says. So you still haven't explained what you disagree with.
@@gavinfann7041what?! Russia doesn’t even see Ukraine as a sovereign state. Who cares if it is about “border security”. They aren’t gonna give the land they took back. Tankie clown
@@gavinfann7041 NATO is in no violation. Russia itself signed a treaty in 1997 that says they allow countries to join NATO. Whatever Putin says nowdays is made up lies and he ignores history.
Great video!
Why was Ukraine's intent to join NATO not mentioned? The most relevant factor omitted.
So what? Russia doesn’t even recognize Ukraine as a country. It just wants the damn land. If Russia recognized Ukraine then the war would be more justified
@@scorpionjaxxer339 So what???!!!
Russia's recognition or lack thereof for Ukraine's sovereignty doesn't deny the fact that having Ukraine join NATO would be a huge security risk for Russia. Of course wanting the land and believing that Ukraine is part of Russia add to the motivation, but the factor that catalyzed the invasion was the intel they had on Ukraine joining NATO.
@@wisefix9256 yes it does Matter, because they aren’t gonna give the land back. It’s gonna be like a 2nd holodomor
@@wisefix9256 yes, it does matter because they are not going to give the land back
@@scorpionjaxxer339 You are completely missing the point. I already agreed with you that Russia would like to have Ukraine's land. However, that has never been enough motivation for them to invade. To imply that the war has nothing to do with NATO is naive at best. There's been plenty of occasions in which Russia could have invaded Ukraine more easily, like during the 60s and 70s when the US was bogged down with the Vietnam war and the USSR (Soviet block) was far stronger and more cohesive. Ask yourself why now. The answer is that NATO has been getting closer and closer to Russia's borders, and having Ukraine join would put NATO right at their doorstep. Too big a security risk. Add that additional motivation to wanting the land and now you have a war. The NATO ingredient is what made the difference. Without it, there would have never been an invasion, as it's been the case for more than 80 years during which they also wanted the land but it wasn't enough motivation. Self preservation will always supersede greed.
That video has not aged well
Quite the opposite, this video has aged wonderfully.
@@vmasing1965 Well, the map in the beginning, showing Russia occupying all of Ukraine, did not age well.
The rest aged quite acceptably.
@@Tjalve70 This animation in the beginning was a little strange indeed.
Almost as strange as the people with alternative facts who think Russia is doing great in Ukraine.
Nobody knows the future, but as of right now Russia has lost more than half of the territory they had in the beginning of their "victorious invasion". In what world is this success?
This is why India separated Pakistan. Better to have a small country than 2 conflicting nations inside 1.
0:50 Ukraine republic was occupied by russians by 1921 and before it soviets have no access to the Azov or the Black sea because Kuban was part of Ukraine republic from 1917 to 1921.
You didn't go back far enough. ❤
What would the U.S. do if Mexico sided with Russia and allowed Russian weapons pointed at the U.S. Same as Russia has done in Ukraine. This war was caused by the U.S. and Nato. 🇨🇦
Your point would be better presented if you ask what USA would do if Russia tries to place nukes on Cuba.
Except, that's something you don't need to imagine.
@@Tjalve70 Cuba is a small nation state that has no ties to the US. You mention that nothing happened to Cuba, but you forget the bay of Pigs incident or the fact that Kennedy rejected a direct military intervention on multiple occasions.
Canada is a more appropriate example. IF a Russian funded revolution would bring to power a group of extremists who would shout "death to all Americans" or "Americans on the knives", pretty sure the we wouldn't be fucking around.
E.u caused that mess
EU had nothing to do with it.
If you want to blame anyone, you can blame NATO for not paying attention when Russia said they felt threatened by NATO's expansion.
I'm not saying NATO did anything wrong when expanding, or that NATO should not have expanded. But NATO should have paid attention when Russia said they felt threatened.
After all, a cornered rat tend to attack. And I guess a cornered bear would do the same.
Indeed
@@Tjalve70 This is probably the most level-headed take on the war I have ever seen. You have a good head on your shoulders
@@dukeofwolves1139 Thanks.
I have to admit that it did take me a few months into the war before I realised this. But I have realised it for about 2 years now. And it surprises me that NATO don't seem to have realised it.
Maybe that means Russia has a good reason to feel threatened by NATO. Or maybe it means the NATO leaders are stupid.
I can't imagine any other possibilities than those two.
@@Tjalve70 Russia has a reason to fear NATO, but Putin should have known a wider war with the western superpowers will undoubtedly end in MAD. He became fearful, and now he is in this mess, unfortunately
Ukraine signed an accord to not join NATO nor anything like the EU and not put weapons in from NATO members in the country.. Ukraine broke the accords
They did NOT mention anything like the EU, only NATO.
NATO yes.. joining the west and weapons,.. I forget the wording but the USA and Ukraine broke the 91 and 94 agreements.. but the US media doesn't say anything about this and lies.. all for money
There was never such an accord neither from the Ukrainian side nor from the NATO side.
But there WAS an accord that russia, UK and US signed in 1994, the Budapest memoranda. Ukraine gave up its nukes and some heavy weapons in exchange for territorial integrity. UK and US were guarantors in this accord. Guess who broke that. Starts with r ends with ussia.
Don't believe russian propaganda. If Ukraine falls, you WILL be next.
Name the treaty. I’ll name one too- In the Russia-NATO founding act, Russia agreed that it would respect the territorial integrity of the nations around it, something it has constantly violated.
0:33
just like Finland and third of Poland. Just saying :)
btw. Russians haven't even sealed their border with Finland after it entered NATO. Cause Russian fear of NATO aggression so much.
I think it is a pretty fair video but I think we are being unfair to Russia with the fact that Nato and the United States have been pointing rockets toward Russia for years now so in some ways it is just self defense. But the death or punishment of innocent civilians on both sides is not right.
How is attacking Ukraine supposed to do anything about the US “pointing rockets” at Russia? That makes no sense
yes because a country with 5000 nuclear warheads will be invaded. pathetic clown.
Gee, I wonder why the US would want to point rockets at Russia. I’m sure it has nothing to do with anything Russia has done over the years.
@@bloodgout Russia is rightfully feeling threatened by NATO's expansion.
I'm not saying it's wrong of NATO to expand when countries want to join and are eligible to join. But it is absolutely justified for Russia to feel threatened by this. And that is something NATO has been completely ignoring.
Invasion has NOTHING in common with "NATO threat" cause it already had the border with NATO and NATO wasn't EVEN CLOSE on agreement to negotiate Ukrainian membership. Just a stupid justification for the poor awared westerners😢
Only people far from Eastern Europe can say that this is conflict between politicians and people trapped in it. Read the history - russia been doing oppression and forced assimilation of Ukrainians for centuries, yet we are still here, with our own language, culture, long history and country.
P.s. Crimea was given to Ukrainian Soviet republic, but people forget that part of very fertile Ukrainian land was given to russian soviet republic (Voronezh, Taganrog, Belgorod), not even mention Cuban (the region with Rostov on Don as a major city), where the majority were speaking Ukrainian and were Ukrainians in the 20th Century. But you wouldn’t hear from any officials and most of Ukrainians about getting those territories back. Cause everyone agrees that this is an insane idea, yet majority of russians would still be talking about that monster state of soviet union as some sort of "lost paradise"… so everybody should rejoin (wether they want it or not)😑
Where is the seat of the Rus? I rest my case.
All those lands that were given to the Russian SSR were historically Russian to begin with. As was Crimea.
It was Lenin who created the Ukranian SSR, before that it was a small nation name Galecia.
The notion that Russian's tried to assimilate the Ukranians is a false one as well. Go read on how Bogdan Hmelnitskii literally went to Peter I, and asked him for protection and autonomy in order to escape the Polish oppressors. This was also the reason why Ukraine went and joined the USSR 1922, in order to escape the poles. This triggered the soviet-polish war that ended with the soviet's failure to take Warsaw. Again omitted by the author.
@@ArmaDino22 look at the ethnic maps of 19th century and historical records of people traveling by those lands. They were majorly populated by Ukrainians.
Crimea was populated majorly by Crimean tatars, until the mass deportation by soviets. But the reason to unite it with Ukrainian ssr was because it was very logical and logistically good for the Crimea itself. Economically too. It wasn’t because of any ethnic group questions, communists were the last ones to care about ethnicity after 1930s.

@@bloodgout If the roles were reversed y ou'd call it a slippery slope "fallacy"
Ukraine is to Russian civilization what Jamestown and the Colony of Virginia is to American culture: the place where it all began. So, Moscow will NEVER allow the Western powers to control it. Modern Muscovite (Moscow) controlled Russia began as a fur trading colony of Ukraine (Kievan Rus) 1,000 years ago. But, eventually, Moscovy (Moscow) became more powerful than Ukraine and has conquered and bullied her old motherland since...for Muscovite Russia needs Ukraine's farm land and those warm-water ports to maintain ITS empire. It's hard for Westerners to understand that there are multiple, competing Russias within the Russian Empire, not just one unified Russia. In fact, the rulers of the Muscovite Empire used to call themselves "Tsar of ALL the Russias." Ukraine was one of those Russias, and perhaps its most vital one to control.
Gads... Nick, I can't believe you're spouting anti-Russia propaganda. *smh*
Why wouldn’t he be anti Russian? They’re our enemy
“Why isn’t he shilling for dictatorships?” 🤡
I personally would support something more or less like what Vivek Ramaswamy proposed; negotiating a peace treaty in which the eastern regions with large Russian populations are ceded to Russia and Ukraine is barred from entering NATO. I’m no friend of Russia’s, but I have little love for the extremely corrupt government of Ukraine, and a little land on Russia’s border isn’t worth forging a Russo-Chinese anti-NATO alliance over. Besides, if those territories want to join Russia, who are we to stop them? Better that there be some Ukraine left over for those who don’t want that to flee to.
Genesis character 10 is God's segregation plan with land grants. That land belongs to Russia. When the gathering of nations (united nations) changed so many "bounds of habitation" that set globalization into the beginning of the end.
God created different people and gave each a homeland and their own tongue (language). The point of nations is each country will have saved people so the lost people can see the difference. Nations are determined by kindred (race).
This is still in affect see Acts 17:26 (after reading Genesis characters 9 & 10). Then Genesis 21:10 & Galatians 4:30.
Globalization is an old trick of Satan's, see Genesis character 11.
