Everyone is talking about how they bonded with niko and all that but no one is talking about how this game literally flipped the meaning of immersion on its head. Usually, you get immersed by thinking that you are your character, but here you get immersed by knowing that you arent your character

But I would argue that yes, you ARE your character. Not like Niko, you, the player, the person behind the screen exists as character in the game. You control yourself giving instructions and interacting with Niko, solving the puzzles that no other character besides you could. This game is so amazing not because you feel immersive without being your character, but because you are a character in the game, and not some avatar that you created, YOU the person in real life is the main character in the game along with Niko.

    • @memor22
      @memor22 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

well, in this case, you right now, typing away at the keyboard, are the canon god of that world, you know it and the game knows it, niko knows that too.
every individual person RIGHT NOW, a human being is who the game is calling out to, and you respond

So I haven't actually played/watched someone play One Shot, but I'm now a little confused? Specifically, what I'm getting from this comment, the song description, and the song title reminds me A LOT of The Eleventh Hour from The Adventure Zone: Balance. Is that a coincidence?

Then I played Undertale, and thought no other game could beat THAT.
And then I finally played Oneshot after researching for more games like Undertale.
God, this game does everything in the right way and is possibly the BEST game with the absolute best story ever. I have never cried harder in a video game.

Ok, I'm just going to say,
    *Spoiler*
My final choice was to let Niko return home the first time I played. I cared to much about this kid to make them die such a death for an electronic world. But holy moly, when they *walked out of the game window* after saying goodbye, I was astounded. Yes I know, it was just a game, but oh my, that one specific part made it seem so real to me.
So I started digging around the files. I saw my save pop up, and looked around for a bit in there. Then a thought occurs, "would it be bad if I deleted this? I could play it again and maybe save both? What if there's something I missed?"
So I delete the file, and I almost have a heart attack when Niko remembers my name. The entity knows I was here before. Niko woke up with the Journal.
So at this point I'm basically screaming because *i think I did something good*. This was all part of the game. I can save everyone.
So I go to get what I now know is the solstice ending, and my heart breaks a little with each little thing that happens. I feel like I made such a mistake, Niko is upset, the world is ending, my favorite characters keep dying, I messed up.
But then I didn't. I was able to save them both. And I was happy. I got to see Niko leave once again, and there was still light shining through the world.
So I'm happy, but at the same time, I miss them so much. I miss Niko so very much. But they're happy. And the world is happy. So I should be happy as well. But, I miss them. And I can't stop thinking about them.

It's seriously surprising to me how much of an emotional impact this game gave me. The story wasn't even that complicated, neither was it that long. It had something to do with the bewildering and unsettling atmosphere of the (amazing) music and the visuals, and with the smart way the game made you care for the character(s). Niko was always optimistic, but the player would constantly be given a feeling of uncertainty and apprehension because of the overall tone of the game. You knew always something was going to go wrong, and it wasn't going to be that easy. If you couple that in with the main character's innocence and likeableness, along with their certainty that everything would turn out well despite not knowing what's to come, it becomes very impactful. The thing is, both the player and Niko are mutually unaware of the situation they're in. However, as the player, it just doesn't feel right. You know things are going to go wrong, but you also don't.
It's incredible how this game has extremely overwhelmingly positive reviews on steam, in the top five of the most highly rated games on the entirety of the library, but it still has only small amounts of recognition. It does, however, feel nice that this game doesn't have a toxic fandom. It just has several people who really respect it. Anyways, this is probably somehow one of the most memorable games I've ever played.

"Toxic" is subjective. Some people simp for the game and keep arguingo about it being superior than undertale and that or this or those games and bla blabla. Thats a pretty annoying part of the small community

Samwad Undertale is a plot-driven RPG, Doki Doki is a visual novel. They're similar in that they reach out at the player, but in general are two completely different game genres.
Edit: I would say that Doki Doki is my least favourite, however... The plot and/or story for all the acts were all quite uninteresting and bland, considering it's supposed to be a visual novel with a proper story. I still prefer Undertale and OneShot though, they really give you a kick for playing the game.

    • @samwad484
      @samwad484 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

BlueSharpie I would agree that doki isn't on the level of this or undertale (not quite anyway) but I found the story and learning about the girls fascinating. Yuri's chill but the whole game wasn't as purposeful as Undertale or as ambitious and successful as Oneshot. For some reason I like it better than undertale though, I can't really give a good reason xd

I liked undertale back then so i watched some youtubers that made gameplays on it,then one of them also started a oneshot series and i didn't really watch it because i was expecting it to be another short fangame.
4 years later or so i was pretty bored and didn't have the best pc(it barely ran tf2) and i was looking for a cheap game with low specs required,so i see oneshot on the steam sale and i kinda remember i saw that thing somewhere once,i had found much better looking games for the same price but for some reason i just got oneshot instead, best purchase ever.
Now i can't stop thinking about it,its just too good to forget and whenever im bored i just do some oneshot related stuff/art,right now i am making this song in minecraft using noteblocks,in vanilla without any other song importing programs etc. And its going pretty good counting i never used redstone before.
It really is an experience,i really dont get that much sadness from sad parts of books/films but after this masterpiece,i couldn't help but cry even after not crying at any movie or book for the
the past years, this managed it,because it doesn't feel like a just a game or like any other story.

I think my favorite part about the way Solstice was done is just how much worse things go along the way. In the normal route, I felt like a traveler passing through that happened to also be trying to save the world. This time, though? The Author's putting it all on the line to get it right. And suddenly, so do the characters; sacrificing themselves, watching the world crumble around them, holding together an entire broken continent with vines and willpower alone. And that starts putting pressure on you; everyone's made these sacrifices, and the only way to make it worth it is to succeed against all odds. In the Barrens this wasn't really the case, since things hadn't fallen apart yet, and the Glen felt more solemn to me. That might have something to do with the fact that the music hadn't changed. But finally, here things feel truly desperate, in no small part due to this song. It's kind of incredible how it does it, considering the backbone of it is just a 4 note loop, but man does it work. Hearing this for the first time, I knew things were worse than ever, and even though it technically wasn't, I felt like time was running out and fast. Welcome to the 11th hour.

it deeply pained me to see all characters suffering bc of those squares...
it's a good replacement for "on little cat feet" which in a normal playthrough sounds rather quiet and soothing, because at that part the refuge is a very interesting place to explore rather than another place that is being destroyed by the squares

It is a glorified walking Simulator, with puzzle elements, but the things it does with it's world, story and characters make this game one of the greatest of all time. One-shot can weave wonders. I want to tell you guys something weird about me: I really bought this game because i love cats! (I know Guys, Niko is not a cat) And i wasnt expecting it to be this good! (Because i am not a big fan of 2d pixel game)
SPOILERS ALERTAt the end i chose to let Niko put the sun on the THING in the tower because i think its the right thing to do if i was niko. When Niko put the sun in,the sun was so bright and then the people in the barren, the glen, the refuge looked so happy to feel the sun again. Then it ended and niko disappeared. I thought i did something bad and i feels bad for Niko because i think i let him die and never gonna get back to his/her mama again. All the time we spent together to get this far... To save the world...and then Niko just disappear and gone like that it feels like I make him/her suffer all this time and all he wanted was just to go home. I found out that something called SOLTICE ENDING exist. So i go in to the oneshot files and document and then there is the note from the Author and he told me to delete the save file. I did that and return to the game. I was shocked that Niko remembers my name! And the entity knows we did this before! I thought i did something horrible again.Niko knows what happened to this world. Niko was upset. Then it turned out to be good. I saved both: Niko and the World. And then its the goodbye time.Niko was happy to be back at the villege and the world is back as it should. We say goodbye and then Niko left and walked to the villege.I almost cry at this point that i need to leave this world and let Niko be with his/her mama.
Anyone can call me stupid, crazy, idiot about how i feel to the game thats all of it is not true but i dont care i just miss Niko what do want from my life?
Thanks for reading the feelings. I really miss that cat tho.

For me, I guess I just couldn't follow through with one decision or another without "cheating". I guess you could say I cheated by looking up what happened before I chose.
But if I was a god, I was going to be the most powerful I could be, so I used omniscience and discovered that there was another way. I sought the wisdom of other gods from parallel universes. They spoke to me.
Sure, maybe this made my decision lose some emotional impact in a way, but this wasn't about me. It was about saving lives! If there was a way I could save both, I had to know. I finished and delivered Niko home and still, it hurts. I miss you Niko :3

Friend I hope you read this after 10 months...I replied to someone else about why this game makes us feel so intensely. I want you to read it too. (I actually just added a lot, i felt it was incomplete)
"Something was so intense about how they designed that storyline. Niko was so special to me it just killed me inside to say goodbye. I loved niko. But perhaps these feelings we feel so strongly are because...we know it's just a game...but we're confused because we so truly love this character...but again...that's all it is...a character. We forget the interactions we made are an illusion. We feel intensely because we don't want it to be an illusion anymore...we want to be close to niko. We want to really tell her how much we love her. And maybe even give her a hug...
...We feel angry when someone else loves niko just as much, because you thought your relationship with niko was exclusive. This is why the game is cruel to us. Somehow they caused us to feel a true, personal connection with niko...this is why the game has us say goodbye to niko, so we can let go. Because it knows, that you know, you realize it's just a character...it doesn't want you to be wrapped up in something that will unfortunately never come to be. So...hold niko...as a concept...in your heart."

I do remember to start watching this few days after Solstice patch be release and considerably change the experience.
The way that this game touches is pretty much special in its points, it takes us to the 4th wall and put an lightless yet emotional environment.
The ending is pretty much satisfying as we see Niko going home, as the expectation of concluding the Messiah's mission also saving The World Machine from it's own corruption caused by fighting the own code.
However, as though we believe that it has been over, staying on certain wonder how Niko is, even if being a game, from what i've seen, the story may be not over yet.
There is some holes that we haven't thought, either by the emotion or the limitations that this simulated world has.
It may be a theory, but i'm pretty much to put it in practice, like as the "Author" did its last effort to fix this place.
Not really a mod or fan-made game, but as a continuation of these clever details that didn't escape for me.
I may be talking with the developers one day, but will build at least the base befote making an former proposoal.

  • @Mr._Sherwood
    @Mr._Sherwood 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

This game's music, holy hell. It sets the scene perfectly, and it truly reaches its peak here. It really is the eleventh hour: squares are corrupting everything, you've lost several close friends already, and the world itself truly seems to be at its limit. That alone is enough to make a guy break down on the spot, but the song indomitably carries on nontheless, and so does Niko. And so do you. It gives a sense of both impending catastrophe and that invigorating feeling of seeing things through to the very end.
I love this game, and I always will cherish it.

    MAJOR SPOILERS!
I get it, Niko's not •real•, but lord does he feel that way. At the end of the original game, I felt absolutely crippled at the idea of both endings. I ended up letting him leave, but after he left... I expected something to happen. I expected an end screen, a finale, proper credits, and yet, nothing. Just that broken screen and a buzzing in my ears. I tried to delete my save, nothing. I tried to replace files, nothing, I was helpless. That is, until I got the Steam version, and I played again. I decided to make the heart-breaking choice of letting the world stay, and yet this ending was equally as unsatisfying. I hated both, and felt like there was nothing there for both endings.
And then I heard about a special file
I opened the clover, and followed the instructions, I did what I was told. I confused all of the characters, including myself. Things were... off. I could tell, it was obvious. Things that normally made sense were irrelevant, I was being forced to skip over things. There was a looming sense of dread, and this culminated in the mines.
In the original run, I already felt uneasy being their "god", knowing that I was only somewhat able to interact with the world, but when Proto informs Niko that I'm just a person, with no actual god-status... my heart sunk so much.
I am so glad I went into this blind

I first saw this game just referenced at first. I then heard it was like Undertale. I decided to pick it up (on switch, because my PC wasn’t working at the time). I was playing normally, until the squares. They didn’t grab my attention at first, but I knew they’d come into play again later. I eventually made it to the Refuge. The squares blocked almost everything. I managed to get the elevator working again, after a lot of trouble with the film. Fast forward to with George (Yes, I did pay a visit to Rue), and I didn’t even know where the tower was before there was nothing else to do (Also, I got George’s 6th side every time). Then was my first time closing the window. After that, I genuinely thought it was the end of the game. Well, until I opened up the clover. It took me a while to finally get the lightbulb again (especially the coin puzzle), but I did it. Then I learned the truth, and had to make a choice. I ended up letting Niko leave, because I was already just so attached to him. And then I thought I had completed the game. But I went back, and thought that maybe something would happen if I deleted my save, and I was right. But I didn’t know about solstice, and ended up not getting passed the minecart. So I beat the game again, this time saving the world, but nothing happened, again. So I deleted my save again, but this time figured out the book, and so began my journey on solstice. But this comment is long enough, and let’s just say that I was really happy with the ending.

How can you say this. You must have cried in the normal end but if not, then in the solstice ending or mid-way.

When you had a dream and saw Niko, they tell you they are ok, pancakes were delicious and they miss you but are happy to see you, and you're happy to see them in your dream you tell them you are doing good too.....then you wake up

I’m not sure how many times we’ve went on this journey.
I’m not sure how long it’s been.
I’m not sure how many endings we’ve already gotten
I’m not sure how many goodbyes we’ve said.
But this ending, will be the last.
    Goodbye. Thanks for everything.

also Niko is a real person might be why ppl get upset over him leaving she is also the MOST ADORABLE VIDEO GAME CHARCHTER in history

I don't know but I think it's unnecessary for them to release a sequel to oneshot, or a prequel, plus it would be incoherent argumentatively and practically contradict the whole lore of oneshot.
      PD: I'm listening to it right at 10:59 :') it's almost 11 o'clock
