On the island of Bohol, in the Philippines, an expanse of otherworldly cones look like ruins from a lost civilization. But the Chocolate Hills, formed naturally, over millions of years. They change appearance over the course of each year, as well. Lush in the rainy season, the vegetation dries in summer, imparting the golden-brown hue that gives them their name-people compare the hills to giant Hershey's Kisses. Some 1,700 mounds extend across 20 square miles, rising as high as 400 feet. The land’s limestone base formed from skeletons of sea life. Geologic processes lifted the rock, and water slowly eroded it. Similar processes carve limestone around the world, but the Chocolate Hills' combination of shape and uniformity makes them unique.

These hills in the Philippines got their name because they change color as the seasons shift. What fact about these mounds intrigued you the most?

The whole island is made of limestone. The island moved a few inches to the next island after the last earthquake. That's fascinating.

When my father was alive, this was his favorite place to visit. He would visit the Philippines about every 2 or 3 years and always the Chocolate Hills was a permanent staple on his itinerary.
We have a wall in the study that features photo's that he took of the Chocolate Hills for all 12 months (Jan. to Dec.) but in different years. Dad was just enchanted by the place.
This November (2018) we will be visiting the Philippines to scatter dad's ashes at the Chocolate Hills.

I live close by. The sight is truly magnificent. Should try experiencing the sunrises and sunsets there. At dawn, the hills are covered with clouds with only the tips peeking over the foggy expanse. At sunset, witness the beautiful array of colours in the sky and how it is perfectly complemented with the silhouettes of the hills and trees. ❤️
