Priest and Sabbath both hail from Birmingham England. Imagine that! Same town produces the 2 most influential metal bands of ALL time! I like to put it this way---Sabbath made it Heavy, and the Priest made it Metal!

The Sentinel might just be the epitome of classic heavy metal. Like the saying goes, Black Sabbath invented heavy and Priest invented metal. Just perfect and the live version slays. Rob Halford is really just phenomenal, when he narrates/sings in the middle he always gets me ("the knives fly like bullets!")
Quite right about their beginnings, 1969 was the year they formed (as Freight) and changed their name to Judas Priest in 1970. First album out in 1974 (Rocka Rolla, the s/t song is quite nice) but it was 1976 with Sad Wings of Destiny that their stream of classics begin. Victim of Changes is the undisputed classic from that album but there is a whole treasure of albums and songs in the 70s era (Beyond the Realms of Death, Exciter, Hell Bent for Leather would make for lovely reactions), then British Steel marks the start of the 80s era (some would argue 1979's Hell Bent for Leather but anyway) where Breaking the Law comes from, as well as Living After Midnight (I'm mentioning the uber classics) and then after the not-so-hot-for-most Point of Entry came Screaming for Vengeance and Defenders of the Faith, the two total heavy metal (genre defining) albums (where Sentinel comes from - but I would love to see a reaction to Jawbreaker as well).
In 1986 they released Turbo (the concert you just watched was from that tour), which is their 80s controversial release, they went too pop for most metalheads' taste but I think it's a quality album, very unique for what it is. Then came Ram it Down, suffers from the thin production and drum machine but GOD the solos on that album (the s/t song is otherworldy and a precursor to Painkiller). 1990 came what many consider their best (there is no definitive best Priest album, some would pick a 70s album (Sad Wings... and Stained Class seem to be the favorites) , others one of the two 80s I mentioned and a whole lot of people, esp. the younger generation (meaning up to people now in their early 40s!) just worship Painkiller, which is a flawless, ass-kicking heavy metal album from start to finish, informed by the speed/thrash of the late 80s (Painkiller, Nightcrawler, Touch of Evil, anything really!). And filled to the brim with HOT soloing. I should note that it is incredibly rare to see guitarists into the third decade of their career suddenly stepping up their game musically/technically, esp. Glenn Tipton became a bona-fide shredder in his 40s! They toured with Pantera and Annihilator that year and apparently Rob Halford was quite influenced by Pantera. He left Priest, formed Fight and released War of Words in 1993. That's a GREAT album bby the way (Into the Pit, Laid to Rest, excellent choices) but the follow-up wasn't as good.
At this point, metal was very much considered dead by the industry and many musicians distanced themselves from the scene. Rob Halford did that too. He released his industrial-electronic collab with Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails - do Hurt!) and kind of denounced metal but he regretted that, made a comeback in 2000 with Resurrection (again, fantastic album, Silent Screams is just PHENOMENAL) and then rejoined Priest in 2002.
Judas Priest had replaced Halford with a young American called Tim "Ripper" Owens (incredible talent, amazing pipes) and in 1997 put out Jugulator, which saw Priest being very much influenced by bands like Fear Factory or Pantera. I find the album awesome (except for the solos) but the follow-up (Demolition) was rather poor and the band did not seem to go anywhere. There are many Priest fanatics who don't even acknowledge the albums. Very similar to the Iron Maiden situation in the 90s (the Blaze albums and the Dickinson reunion. Hellrider comes from the comeback album with Rob Halford (Angel of Retribution). Since then, they have released three more, with Angel fo Retribution and the last one Firepower being the standouts.
Anyway, Judas Priest is one of the titans of the genre, they were there from the beginning, they have released many classic albums and tons of classic songs, Rob Halford has influenced pretty much EVERYONE (and not just vocally, the leather and spikes thing can be attributed to him), the guitar duo of KK Downing and Glenn Tipton is legendary and in short (sorry for the long-ass message) they truly are metal gods. HUGE diversity in the songwriting, really, they have covered a LOT of ground...
PS: Really enjoy your reactions :)
PPS: Zed Yago - The Fear of Death (for me and my wife! :) )

Sabbath , Budgie ( formed before Any of them) , Deep Purple , Trapeze created metal in thoses early diverse patterns .
Doom , Funk metal , groove, heavy , speed / thrash , neo classical , progressive ( while Uriah heep would be mentionned too )
But in the 1967-1970, Budgie , and especially Trapeze and Judas priest that are in essence a lot more closer ( and much more influence on Priest than sabb ever ) to each other than most people may think and quite hidden brother .
Thoses bands are a particular trinity , born in the same era of others , but they did something more modern and Edgy than sabb .
Influencing more extreme stuff to come .

The best of Priest is from the 'Unleashed In The East' live album. 'Victim of Changes', most notably.

    • @nickkraitor6560
      @nickkraitor6560 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Walamonga1313 I also think the original Victim of Changes is better than on Unleashed in the East, however The Green Manalishi I find to be amazing. Halford's high notes at the end is just incredible. Victim of Changes on Battle Cry has a great into, but the scream at the end kills it for me, as I find it simple a scream, nothing more.

If you liked "The Sentinel" live version, you need to watch the rest rest of this concert 'Fuel for Life".This was the best live performance Priest ever did, maybe because they were in their prime! Turbo Lover sounded just like it did on the studio album as did Love Bites. I saw this concert and was blown away! You guys really, really need to do a live reaction to the two song I mentioned and trust me when a live video (Turbo Lover) gets 1.2 million veiws I would say it is well liked! Add yourself to the list...

Hi guys yes Rich you are partly right there was a "first version" of Judas Priest that came out around 1969 before Rob Halford joined....the singer's name was Al Atkins....Rob Halford didn't join Priest until early1973 I think and the only original member is the blond guitarist K.K.Downing

You nailed it Rich...Priest's inception (involving members we're familiar with) was 1969 when KK Downing and Ian Hill teamed up and got the ball rolling. The name 'Judas Priest' was already in use by 4 other members just before then, and when their vocalist teamed up with KK and Ian and then drummer Chris Campbell, the newest re-incarnation was born....Halford joined by '73, and Glenn Tipton came along shortly after.

54 now, and still a metal head. I bought my first Priest album starting with 1978’s Stained Class. Their break out album began with 1980’s British Steel. It put them over the top. I pretty much bought everything Priest after that. These days I also listen to all types of metal.

Saw Judas Priest with Uriah Heep live last year in Dortmund (Germany) and both bands are still kicking major butt!
If you want to dig deeper in the roots of Heavy Metal, I'd suggest you listen to Atomic Rooster's Death "Walks Behind You" - or even older songs if you're in the mood, because the need to externalize powerful negative emotions in a creative and liberating way, goes really way back in time!
Oh and that remark? "Agressive Nerds"? Spot on!

As someone who grew up with epilepsy as well as a love of Judas Priest it was touching to hear you talk about your son and why JP means so much to the channel. My first grand mal seizure happened on 7/7/77. I was four years old. Thankfully, I outgrew it when I was about 12. I am so sorry about your son, Rich. While I can't relate to your pain I do relate to what it is like to struggle with epilepsy. As for JPs place in metal it seems to me that while Sabbath and Zeppelin have elements of folk and psychedelia to them Priest was the band that made metal it's own form. They were influenced by those bands obviously as well as Deep Purple and others but metal didn't come into its own until Judas Priest. Godspeed. I enjoyed the video.
