I live in AZ, where there are literally no laws restricting blade size or mechanism, but I still bought one of these knives on a whim because I liked the blade shape and wanted a spyderco that didnt have a black handle. Turns out I love this knife, its great for edc and light use, its light, non-threatening, and its actually really convenient being able to open and close it using just the thumb hole.
I am US Military stationed in the UK, and I picked up the Foliage Green G-10 Leaf Blade and Foliage Green G-10 Drop Point (Full flat grind too, and even rarer) once I found out I would be coming here. I carry them every day (one is in a neck sheath that I wear under my shirt, other clipped to pocket), and they are every bit as good as locking knives for EDC, and even most of my duty tasks. Incredible knives. I will continue to EDC these even when I am back in the USA in a few years.
The reason our knives can lock, is so when you stab someone the knife is more likely to close than penetrate, obviously we're not all cruising the streets for a stabbing victim, but sometimes when people drink or take narcotics they do stuff they wouldn't usually do. But yeah from a user perspective I agree with you, a locking knife is much safer
averageoutlaw But you can still buy normal knives (especially cutlery for food and stuff) so does it make any sense to expect a criminal to use a 3" pen knife when he could easily just grab a bigger one?
Ahhhh the G10 knife I was involved in the design of as part of British Blades, it was my idea to put the UKPK Design Team stamping on the spine. Got two of those knives and it's my EDC. I am lucky to consider Sal, Eric and Gail as friends. Great people.
So glad Spyderco addresses this issue! Next time I go visit my Dad's side of the family across the pond a few of these are coming with me. They will make perfect gifts for my male cousins!
I'm currently living in Scotland working on my PhD and have been carrying the UKPK everyday for the last year and a half. I can't hate the thing enough. I have cut my knuckles or pinched my fingers over a dozen times because it does not lock (I think part of the problem is that I find it hard to hold because I have large hands; so someone who has smaller hands might not have these problems). I can't wait to move back to the US so that I can start carrying my Spyderco Military again.
Thanks for giving this knife some attention! I've had by grey leaf FRN UKPK for about a year and have gotten some great EDC use from it. Spyderco have really done the UK market a favour by producing a blade geared towards our needs and laws. I've also got a Spyderco Squeak, which is a similar type of knife to the UKPK leaf FRN in design except for having a 2" blade. Might be worth a look!
I live in the Uk and I'm a "prepper". My housemate bought me one of these for my birthday and I love her a little more now I've seen this review. Good hardy utility knife I can carry. And besides all the things I can keep ready at home in the event of a SHTF situation, it's what you have on you tat counts. Quality blade.
Just moved to the UK. The laws here are insane. "Lets all be victims" ... and also tear open boxes and such. Because reasons? I just got a UKPK, 2014, they've tightened up the spring considerably. Still easy to open with one hand but safer on the unintentional closing resistance. In a self defense scenario you'd probably be safer keeping something like this in your pocket.
Yeah people here are quite insane when it comes to self defence, only in northern ireland do they have any sense (you can get CCW there, buts its very hard)
averageoutlaw The "legitimate reason" is on the police, not on you, as in they have a list of what is "legitimate"; if you carry it for protection or "just 'cause" then it isn't good enough for them
Great, spot on review, Nutnfancy. My first UK Pen knife was the G10/CPM S30V with orange colored handle scales. That knife is so cool that I bought a couple of the foliage green G10 versions (both drop and leaf). I also bought the Titanium and the Carbon Fiber. All very cool. I decided to add the FRN's just to round out the collection. Totally agree with you on spring strength. The only one that I don't have is the black. Overall, great utility blades.
I got the black plain leaf one, I just love it. Can't carry a locking/fixed blade in Israel, and this thing is just cool. I still can't bring it if i'm going to a mall, school, theater, a club, a sports court or a game room. I find the tension to be amazing for what it is here, an alternative to another slipjoint (which always look the same and have almost no tension).
You got me into Spydercos. First a Para Military 2 then a UK Penknife FRN black leaf shape in spring 2011. Used it for a surf trip to Portugal and travel to non permissive countries and EDC it ever since though I have a Strider, Benchmade and others. Side effect, it is legal as the combination of locking blade and one hand opening became a bit outlaw-ish in Germany. As I do not recognize the government to rule my life I do it anyway. Met Sal Glesser in person, awesome guy.
i wish there was a locking version of this knife..the price size weight and clip are perfect and spyderco has nothing else with all those qualities that locks
we have THE worst laws regarding knifes and fire arms in this country, just neutering honest people who want to defend themselves or carry anything other than a toothpick.
Just letting all UK people who like this knife know that Heinnie Haynes has the full flat ground blade design back in stock. The slip-joint is much stiffer than previous models - a step up. Approx £43 - choose the free shipping method as they usually ship small things out the same day with next day delivery - for free! Mine arrived today - new favorite EDC blade.
great review on a cool series of knives. they are great for edc in the uk and cover about 99% of the cutting jobs needed on a daily basis. we can carry a locking blade if we have a good reason, but for having on you all the time, these are great. if you like a stronger slip joint you should look at the boker plus trance 42 or the byrd tern (made by spyderco and has the full back spring like the g10 version reviewed here). thanks for giving the uk a mention, love your channel :)
@MrFermanaghman Might be just to US free shipping. Sorry about that. I will make the annotation more accurate. I hope you can score one. There might be some good sources over there.
Another UK TNP'r here - had the FRN UKPK for over a year and acquired the G10 via secondary market a couple of months ago. I would thoroughly agree with everything you said about both of them. The FRN is fine - until you try the G10 version which is absolutely superb. Thx for the review though - I think TNP is having a (small) influence on the debate here and getting more people into knives, guns and all good outdoors stuff - so keep up the great work!
this is a good knife. i carried once and it helped me out of the remote garage one night. slip joint never close on you while you are holding it opened. Tks for the review :)
Second type of cool for me: "Golden Colorado, U.S.A., Earth" on the blade. Love it right away cause it's one of life's little pleasures- A Nutnfancy Spyderco knife review.
only 6 teens robbed several passengers on a train in Sydney(about 1 am), two passengers were beaten up. my point is that, as people are so defenseless, they have learnt to cope with evil and live cowardly . it is really a lose of good spirit!
In the UK you are allowed to carry any knife if you have a justifiable reason. For example you may be going fishing so you are allowed to take a fishing knife with you, if your scuba diving you can take a scuba diving knife with you and so on. I know people who go hunting and camping big knives and they never get any bother.
I thought this was a review I hadn't seen. Didn't realise it was new! I am English. And I am looking for a Spyderco legal carry knife right now. Spooky! Thanks for doing the review Nutn. I like it when you cover stuff I can actually buy.
I find the GIN-1 to be an excellent EDC-steel. Holds an edge well enough, doesn't rust and damnit, I can get it sharp with a coffee-cup and and a leather belt. Overall the UKPK is an excellent choice.
True, I have a lock knife for work, need it for opening sacks, cutting flash of parts etc, but I only carry it to and from work, these I could have on me all the time.
@nutnfancy just got a new cold steel recon 1 Previously reviewed, and it looks like they've been listening to TNP. They moved the clip to top of carry handle for deep carry and got rid of the steel liners for weight. Thanks for helping get gear made better when companies are smart enough to listen to honest opinions.
I paid £100+ for the green G10 UK pen knife when I was there. It was well worth it. The knife is small, light and 'friendly' looking but has a finger choil and a sharp blade for for actual use.
Coming from the UK I totally agree with what is being said about our legislation. Its serious pussification. If the scumbags that shank 14 year olds in gangs of 12+ knew that every person is a possible knife carrier the nature of their cowardice would dictate that they would think twice about it.
While I love my locking blades, I would love to add one of these to my collection. I'm a big fan of the "stretch" blade shape on these. These are the best thing to happen to countries that don't allow locking blades since Victorinox knives.
Uk seems to be a weird country. They are allowed to use supressors on their hunting rifles but not to use a fixed blade folding knife?! Glad I live in Austria :-)
i've been carrying one for more than a year as for the moment i live in germany, where there are also some legal issues with carrying knives.. i have the blue one with the leaf shaped blade and i must say it is such a great EDC knife..very light, non offensive design..they ride super deep in your pocket, a great wire clip..
In the uk technicaly you cannot carry a locking penknife. But if you are in the bush or a soldgier you have a valid reason to own a locking blade and nobody would really mind. But I love you consideration nutnfancy, hese would be great for town edc.
Yeah the G10 one looks great because of the FFG, G10 handle, and stronger spring. Thanks for remembering blade centering. I got a Tenacious just recently and the blade centering is terrible! It's about as bad as it could be. My Skyline is not very good but I'm okay with it. The Tenacious though I'm pretty sure I have to send it back because it rubs the liner completely.
Spyderco has a great product but they need to remake their website its totally confusing and very hard to find what your looking for. the knives are not categorized properly which make you have to look through a hundred knives until you find the one you want
Of course this is marketed mainly in the UK or places where locking knives are illegal, but if you're in the States, there are a lot of locking blades @ UKPK money with just as good or even better steel.
I wish it did have steel liners. I know Nunt is always weight conscious which is why every EDC place I carry also fills the role of emergency defense. it is better to carry one 3 plus oz blade than 2 separate knives
I love the gear reviews! I come home everyday from work looking for another review! Please, please slap up some tac wear reviews. I'm looking to drop some money in wearables and need some serious reviews.
I live in the U.K. (great review by the way) and i wont go on about how silly our Knife laws are :( i have the UKPK, Squeek & and Urben and i gotta say there good if not great non lockers i wish moor Knife componeys would adress the the U.K. problem we have hear because there really aint that many options for U.K. edc Keep reveiwing Nutin meybe one day they mite start takein Notice (theres a LOT of people over hear feel the same way)
These really make excellent training knives for when your kids are mature and old enough. Lets them learn what they can and can't do safely with a knife, rather than being given the false confidence of a locking blade right out of the gate.
My Spyderco Bob Terzuola slipit arrived today, wicked knife much better than the three FRN versions you reviewed here, the lock is stiff like the G10 model with S30V steel and a medium traction carbon fibre handle, although I aldeady have the knife I'd love to see a Nutnfancy rewiew, think you'd like this one as a collectors knife mate. Cheers from Joe in England.
I either carry the Spyderco Kiwi or a Swiss army knife as my every day carry knife. Basically you can carry a knife as long as it doesn't lock and the blade is under 3 and a quarter inches.
Perhaps if spyderco designed a knife with the cutting performance of a crayon and a handle that could double as a butt plug, it may comply with the ridiculous knife laws we have in Australia.
You know I was upset you only posted the ZT Shot Show review for 2012 but I'm now realizing you have some awesome gear, gun, and knife reviews instead!
@TheoryTech the law concerning knifes CJA 1988 sec 139 concerns "pointed articles" this was passed to block holes in the Prevention of Crime act 1953 (offensive weapons) where the prosecution had to prove that the weapon was "MADE, INTENDED OR ADAPTED" but could only proceed with one of these options from the outset, and could not deviate at a later date ie knife not made to injure or kill but can,bayonet-kill or injure, pickaxe handle with nails adapted ect PM me if you want more info.
@OriginalOwner777 No, I am serious about that. I checked eBay yesterday on that. In the US incl. exchange rate, the price was approx. 31 Euros. The local vendors sold at 65 Euros. By exchange rate logic only, in Europe (where the € is used) all American knives cost less than in the US (because 1,3 dollars is 1 euro roughly), but in fact it is the other way around, the only way to get it at a low price is to import it yourself.
I'm from the UK and if I need to carrie a knife to do jobs from place to place I use the letherman skelatool and my excuse is for begin a scout and have a fixed blade Gerber near Gyrills for serious shit and as long as I'm outdoors it don't matter, You can carrie knifes of all knifes in the uk as long as you have a reasonable official purpose for them
@maczuka "Better" is subjective. IMO (note, my experience) it holds an edge better but is just a hair harder to sharpen. It's not something you'll notice for EDC tasks, just take care of it when you should and you're all good. From what I've read it has higher corrosion resistance so if that's an issue I'd say it's better. I baby my knives a bit (shapen often, clean often, oil often), I have no complaints with GIN-1 (or, for that matter, AUS8) for EDC.
I have a UK Penknife Leaf blade in GIN-1, Maroon FRN, it's awesome, came RAZOR sharp right out he box, super light, don't even really know you have it in your pocket, but best of all it conforms to the absolutely ridiculous laws we have on knife carry here in the UK. Got it from yourcornerstore, even with import tax, it was still cheaper than buying here in the UK
Of course if you really want to LOVE one of these, try and get one of the original release CPMS30V with black G10.... Had one in my pocket for years, never go out without it.
Great review and vey timely, if you ever get the chance and the time, please compare the Byrd Tern, Sog Slipzilla (the one we saw at the Shot Show) and the UKPK. Thanks from another UK viewer!
From what I heard, pretty much all blades are illegal in the UK. As are all self-defense tools. It's up to the opinion of the police officer who stops you if what you're carrying can be used as an offensive weapon or not. So like, even a writing pen can be considered an illegal weapon if the police officer thinks you're carrying it with the intention of using it on another person. Self-defense in general is very iffy in the UK. Although, the new conservative government is trying to ease that.
@MrByronodmon Utah is a fantastic state -be grateful you live there! Sadly we have crossed the event horizon here -and whilst most British citizens know that something is wrong, they don't really understand how to fix it: basically what I'm saying is not enough people would fight for 2A (which we actually used to have) and those that did would be labeled by the Govt and media as the lunatic fringe. If anything people probably wan't the Govt to 'do more.' SHUDDER.

Idiotic laws, having a knife without a lock makes it all around less safe than a locking one...
The reason our knives can lock, is so when you stab someone the knife is more likely to close than penetrate, obviously we're not all cruising the streets for a stabbing victim, but sometimes when people drink or take narcotics they do stuff they wouldn't usually do. But yeah from a user perspective I agree with you, a locking knife is much safer

i think in the uk you can own locking blades but you can't edc them.
Ahhhh the G10 knife I was involved in the design of as part of British Blades, it was my idea to put the UKPK Design Team stamping on the spine. Got two of those knives and it's my EDC. I am lucky to consider Sal, Eric and Gail as friends. Great people.
In the UK we can own lockers but not carry them without "good cause" like work, camping etc.
I'm glad to see Spyderco making knives with the guys on the other side of the pond in mind, and even with their help in developing them.
Awesome news for all the guys across the pond.
Thanks Spyderco!
Thanks for giving this knife some attention! I've had by grey leaf FRN UKPK for about a year and have gotten some great EDC use from it. Spyderco have really done the UK market a favour by producing a blade geared towards our needs and laws.

I've had the maroon one for about 3 months. You're right of course, light as a feather, you forgot you have it. Thanks Nutn!
Quality blade.
oh man, that good old fashioned nutnfancy knife review to start off the week, awesome, just awesome
Just moved to the UK. The laws here are insane. "Lets all be victims" ... and also tear open boxes and such. Because reasons? I just got a UKPK, 2014, they've tightened up the spring considerably. Still easy to open with one hand but safer on the unintentional closing resistance.

Yeah people here are quite insane when it comes to self defence, only in northern ireland do they have any sense (you can get CCW there, buts its very hard)
The law states that you can carry anything if you have a legitimate reason too, if you feel justified to carry a locking knife then do so
averageoutlaw The "legitimate reason" is on the police, not on you, as in they have a list of what is "legitimate"; if you carry it for protection or "just 'cause" then it isn't good enough for them
Great, spot on review, Nutnfancy.
As a subscriber from the UK I just wanted to say thank you for this and all your vids. Keep up the excellent work.
I can confirm that the new slip-joint design is supurb. Very positive and confidence inspiring.
nice of spyderco to reach out across the pond with a nice looking blade. those should sell well over there.
You could be arrested with a toothpick if you used it in an offensive manner.
I never understood why not ALL folding knife makers make clips like that. I LOVE how that clip allows for really REALLY deep pocket carry.
A reversible version of that clip should be on every EDC knife. If my Resilience had that sucker, It would make life easier.
great review on a cool series of knives. they are great for edc in the uk and cover about 99% of the cutting jobs needed on a daily basis. we can carry a locking blade if we have a good reason, but for having on you all the time, these are great. if you like a stronger slip joint you should look at the boker plus trance 42 or the byrd tern (made by spyderco and has the full back spring like the g10 version reviewed here). thanks for giving the uk a mention, love your channel :)
Guys, the locking version of this knife is called the Caly 3 and Caly 3.5, the numbers designate the Blade length
this is a good knife. i carried once and it helped me out of the remote garage one night. slip joint never close on you while you are holding it opened. Tks for the review :)
I carry a grey one almost everywhere I go. Light and slim, perfect EDC for me.
Second type of cool for me: "Golden Colorado, U.S.A., Earth" on the blade. Love it right away cause it's one of life's little pleasures- A Nutnfancy Spyderco knife review.
I own the grey handled one and have to say its a great knife for the price, i use it to cutout cardboard targets for my pellet gun, thanks nut'n.

Brown Delica FFG in my pocket right now, Thanks Nutn
I thought this was a review I hadn't seen. Didn't realise it was new! I am English. And I am looking for a Spyderco legal carry knife right now. Spooky! Thanks for doing the review Nutn. I like it when you cover stuff I can actually buy.
@trafficjuzz Great comment, thanks. Sounds like it fits in over there and low key. Thanks man.
Very cool. I love my Kershaw Skyline for EDC but I might pick up a Delica at some point for a 2nd type of cool. Thanks for sharing!
I find the GIN-1 to be an excellent EDC-steel. Holds an edge well enough, doesn't rust and damnit, I can get it sharp with a coffee-cup and and a leather belt. Overall the UKPK is an excellent choice.
True, I have a lock knife for work, need it for opening sacks, cutting flash of parts etc, but I only carry it to and from work, these I could have on me all the time.
my girlfriend is german so i bought one of these. they are one of my favorite blades! i need to buy more of them!
Awesome ! been waiting for this video for a while ! , great vid mate as always
Another wicked review mate, got a Spiderco slipit Terzuola winging it's way to me in England right now, and another few you recommended as well.
nutn is pumping out the videos latly! Awesome!!!
"Daddy like!" New classic Nutn' line.
Coming from the UK I totally agree with what is being said about our legislation. Its serious pussification. If the scumbags that shank 14 year olds in gangs of 12+ knew that every person is a possible knife carrier the nature of their cowardice would dictate that they would think twice about it.

for public carry in the uk you are alowed to carry a blade aslong as it is under 3 inches long and is non locking
Thanks so much for this review Nutn, been hoping you'd do this as its something ive been looking at getting because i live in the uk. rock on!
Uk seems to be a weird country. They are allowed to use supressors on their hunting rifles but not to use a fixed blade folding knife?! Glad I live in Austria :-)
finally another knife review from nutnfancy i was waiting for another one of there nice job as usual the ukpks are really sweet knives
i've been carrying one for more than a year as for the moment i live in germany, where there are also some legal issues with carrying knives..
i have the blue one with the leaf shaped blade and i must say it is such a great EDC knife..very light, non offensive design..they ride super deep in your pocket, a great wire clip..

These can be bought from Heinnie Haynes in the uk, great company with a quick delivery.
Maroon, Grey, and Shale? Sounds like Red, White, and Blue to me! Great color choice sir.
Spyderco has a great product but they need to remake their website its totally confusing and very hard to find what your looking for. the knives are not categorized properly which make you have to look through a hundred knives until you find the one you want
One more thing, I have heard that they have re-engineered the FRN springs to be stronger. Don't know if the update is in production yet or not though.
Of course this is marketed mainly in the UK or places where locking knives are illegal, but if you're in the States, there are a lot of locking blades @ UKPK money with just as good or even better steel.

Really wanting to get the penknife but with the CF handle scales. Great review nutn'.
Nice one dude, I like my leatherman PS4 squirt for EDC but i'll give these a look too,
I either carry the Spyderco Kiwi or a Swiss army knife as my every day carry knife.
@TheoryTech the law concerning knifes CJA 1988 sec 139 concerns "pointed articles" this was passed to block holes in the Prevention of Crime act 1953 (offensive weapons) where the prosecution had to prove that the weapon was "MADE, INTENDED OR ADAPTED" but could only proceed with one of these options from the outset, and could not deviate at a later date
ie knife not made to injure or kill but can,bayonet-kill or injure, pickaxe handle with nails adapted ect PM me if you want more info.
@OriginalOwner777 No, I am serious about that. I checked eBay yesterday on that. In the US incl. exchange rate, the price was approx. 31 Euros. The local vendors sold at 65 Euros. By exchange rate logic only, in Europe (where the € is used) all American knives cost less than in the US (because 1,3 dollars is 1 euro roughly), but in fact it is the other way around, the only way to get it at a low price is to import it yourself.
they should put a wave feature. but im guessing they would be up-tight about that as well.
Damn nutn intro music sounds like it's from a 70s porn haha.
I'm from the UK and if I need to carrie a knife to do jobs from place to place I use the letherman skelatool and my excuse is for begin a scout and have a fixed blade Gerber near Gyrills for serious shit and as long as I'm outdoors it don't matter,
You can carrie knifes of all knifes in the uk as long as you have a reasonable official purpose for them
For those type of EDC uses, I would opt for a smaller blade. Especially if it's non-locking.
i think the byrd tern is a high value option too (and really pretty)
I wish spyderco made these exact knives in a regular free man's lock back or liner lock design. Love the looks of these knives.
this is based on the caly 3 witch is a backlock
But the caly 3 is not at this price point or made in America
Seriously Nutn,
Many thanks for giving us a view on UK options.
Keep on with the Nutnfancy lifestyle
=0)
@maczuka "Better" is subjective. IMO (note, my experience) it holds an edge better but is just a hair harder to sharpen. It's not something you'll notice for EDC tasks, just take care of it when you should and you're all good. From what I've read it has higher corrosion resistance so if that's an issue I'd say it's better. I baby my knives a bit (shapen often, clean often, oil often), I have no complaints with GIN-1 (or, for that matter, AUS8) for EDC.
FUN FACT: It is illegal to carry a locking knife in San Antonio, Texas. just a little warning for any knife nuts who plan on visiting.
Brits, UNITE and end these ridiculous knife laws. It may not be easy but it can be done!
loving that leaf shaped blade
I love the shape of the blade on the drop point. I would get a Stretch but it's a little too big for my liking.
5 years from now Spyderco will have to change the name of these to US Pen Knife.
Did you have a booth review with Ben from Beretta this year, last years was great!
I manged to swap the blades very easily actually. The back has some space now but it works great.
What happened at SHOT with Spyderco? I can't find any 2012 coverage of their booth.
They should make one with a Union Jack design on the handle.
Great review and vey timely, if you ever get the chance and the time, please compare the Byrd Tern, Sog Slipzilla (the one we saw at the Shot Show) and the UKPK. Thanks from another UK viewer!
Nice review!
Btw, you cannot test hardness by engraving. What you are testing is abrasion resistance.
Although, the new conservative government is trying to ease that.
love the grey handle
@MrByronodmon Utah is a fantastic state -be grateful you live there! Sadly we have crossed the event horizon here -and whilst most British citizens know that something is wrong, they don't really understand how to fix it: basically what I'm saying is not enough people would fight for 2A (which we actually used to have) and those that did would be labeled by the Govt and media as the lunatic fringe. If anything people probably wan't the Govt to 'do more.' SHUDDER.
