    Been watching your videos and doing a lot of research on generators lately. One thing I would recommend, since these don’t have oil filters, is replacing the dip stick with one that has a magnetic tip to catch at least some of the suspended metal shavings in the oil.

      @@johnnysweekends I really don't think securing the cable is going to void the warranty. It's not that much different than cracking the case door to put the oil in. If you damage the case I can see them having an issue, but I know a few people that were told directly by Westinghouse how to resolve the issue and that it wouldn't void any warranty and that it would save some down-time for them taking/sending it to a repair center.

    Wow! I just bought two of these. I was thinking there is no way the actual running watts would be 3,700. It looks like one will do the trick! I was planning on running them parallel. I still might and use mine with propane, or just use gas on one and keep the other as a backup. Mines the DF unit 🤞I don’t have to fix the choke issue. Seems these units are really well engineered just have some QC issues. I’ve noticed a lot of other manufacturers sell this rebranded. I need the the Duel Fuel, Remote Start, Parallel option, light weight 3,000 plus watts. So this or a rebranded version were really the only option I could find. I really appreciate this detailed honest review. At least now I know what I’m getting into.

      @@johnnysweekends Will do! Your channel has a ton of useful videos. I have a small fleet of mobile pet grooming vans. My generator is going to take a month to rebuild. In the meantime I’ve spent an unbelievable amount of time and money trying to build a viable solution. I wish I found your channel sooner. But if I got these generators and the remote start wasn’t working I would have probably waisted more time and money returning and waiting for generators. Knock on wood It all pans out!

      @richardbixler ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well so far so good! Had two of these (DFc updated model) running all day yesterday. My work van has two separate 30 Amp terminals one for 1,500BTU A/C and another for my 2,500W blow dryer and a few 120V outlets. So haven’t needed to use a parallel cable. It was between 90-100 degrees all day. Was able to get about 6-7hrs of work at nearly full load before having to refill fuel. No issues with remote start. The units stayed pretty cool. It’s only been one day, but so far so good!

      @@johnnysweekends There was some oil in the gen when I set it up. I put the 1/2 qt of break in oil that came with the gen. Checked the oil today after about 14hrs. The oil looks really clean, with only slight metallic silt on the tip of the magnetic dip stick I upgraded to. I’ll take the side panel off and carefully drain the oil and add an EZ drain valve. Really happy so far! Considering all of the unique requirements of my particular use case, I don’t think there’s a better generator for any price that would work as well for my application.

    It’s amazing that the manufacturer hasn’t addressed the auto choke issue already. You shouldn’t have to do troubleshooting and moderately skilled maintenance work just to have a brand new unit work properly. Also, I highly recommend you change the oil ASAP. The majority of the contamination happens in the first 10 minutes of running. I’m making a video addressing this topic with my WEN 3800.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And yes this issue should have been fixed a long time ago but when you ship a few thousand generators to America there is no way to send them back.
      So I suggest anyone with the problem to return to the store or where ever they got it and let them deal with it.
      Then someone else who can fix it will get a great deal on a open box item that needs a quick fix.

    I just have to say that during my lifetime, I have been up to my elbows in more machines and systems than I can recall. That having been said, the choke issue you showed is a complete non-starter for me. $1000 to have to tear the thing open to fix a QC issue? What other issues are hidden that will cause a premature loss of my $1000? Now, as someone who is elderly and somewhat limited, they can keep this junk. I would rather go with a brand that cares what they sell you.

    • @johnnysweekends

    • @tracyperry6231
      @tracyperry6231 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Generally I'd agree, but if all other things are equal in the generator to a higher dollar one ($2529 MSRP or Honda EU300i with less power compared to $1049 for the iGen4500DF unit which runs off of propane or gasoline) I can take 20 minutes of time to check the plug and make sure it is secured and add a drop of adhesive to make sure it doesn't "jimmy" loose. And I'm almost 60 years old and nowhere near as "agile" as I was 15 years ago. They make electric tools that do wonders for removing those screws now.
      My second iGen4500DF (ordered through Lowes) came in with no issues and I've been running it for 6 months with no problems showing up. The first one was not a QC issue but a shipping issue. Lowes apparently decided to abuse the box and the plastic case on the iGen4500DF got cracked and I refused to accept it. In fact, I liked the iGen4500DF so well when I noticed that Lowes had the iGen2500 for $399 on a one day sale I grabbed one of them even though I really didn't need it. I can add a MicroAir EasyStart to the travel trailer and it will run our 15K unit just fine, but I really got it for a spare in case we only needed to power the fridge and a few lights around the house it would keep me from pulling out the big gun.

      Popular in the racing world, if you actually get time to break in your stuff sometimes it’s build, fire it up , run a easy lap and go line up, lol. Funny how we ran a whole several times like that and tear down looks great…😂

    Hi! Great video! Very down to earth not nerdy explanations, so crapy old guys like me can understand evrything. Have a question; if you put two of them in Paralell, means that you will have 9000w peak, 7400w running with 50 amps and 240 volts? Or you will have all the above but still 120 volts? Maybe a stupid question for many, but new on this generator thing and want to learn. Once again, great video mate! 👍

      Yes 9000 peak watts and 7400 @ almost 60 amps!!! But yes you will be at 120volts.

      @@johnnysweekends Thanks for your speedy reply. Only thought instead of buying a $3K+ or more if is an inverter, 40-50 amp generator that will consume almost 9 gallons of fuel in maybe 10 hours so I can use the two bedrooms a/c. Maybe using two of those 4500 in Paralell was going to get 240v, so more running wattage, more amps, less fuel consumption (maybe 14-16 hours on total 6.6 gallons of both tanks of fuel) and less money spent. On nights both inverter a/c 12,000btu 20EER 240v from 9pm until 6am, fridge 3.8 amps whole night, 5.0ft chest freezer 1.2 amps whole night, LED tv 1.5 amps for couple hours. And by day only use one of the 4500 for the fridge, freezer, tv and/or laptop cuple hours. Was an idea because I live in PR, which is on the path of 90% of hurricanes. Since hurricane Maria hit the island on 2017 which the energy infrastructure was badly damage, as of today 4 years later, we are dealing with blackouts weekly. @@johnnysweekends Hi again! Saw a Ryobi 4000w inverter in Home Depot. Very user friendly, no techy gadgets. 4 120v 20 amps plugs and one 120v 30 amp plug, says will deliver 12 hrs on one tank of fuel (3.3 gallons) @ 50% load. Is not Paralell capable but is almost half the price of the other ones. Checked your channel but didn't saw any video of that one. Will like to know your opinion of that one, if is possible. Thanks!

    So many issues with my Westinghouse (see my videos). My choke has been one item that has worked flawlessly since day one. They wired mine backwards. The hot and neutral were switched. I used an outlet tester and it showed them switched🙄. Who is assembling these? 😂 My first inverter died and I ordered a replacement ($200). It was also wired backwards. It would be a good thing to test on all Chinese gensets. The remote is a great feature but these generators feel like such a gamble...

      But you should be fine for a easy 10 days I would think. Maybe after letting it run check voltage to make sure fully charged after it shuts off for a couple hrs. Then check in about 3 days and see if it drops a lot.

    Nice video...thank you. Is this generator one that has recently shipped in last couple weeks? Just trying to determine if this is any different than earlier shipped units from several months ago. So I believe this unit was a early model still floating around from a couple months ago because I got it and didnt make the video for over a month as I was busy with work and other vids.
      Most all these generators that are the enclosed inverter type all seem to be neutral floating type. Which if using in a Rv they are supposed to have grounded neutrals like in a home I guess. So it does not transfer the neutral on the 120v units but I’m curious on 240. But I suspect the same.
      And no I don’t have a bonding plug just the surge protector that I use before plugging into home or vacation pedestal.
      Some have said that you can add a ground to the nut on the gen but now it does become dangerous and poses a shock hazard so per osha generators don’t need to be ground to earth just the frame of the gen.

    I have a question, I recently purchased the dual fuel version of this generator and used it for the first time dry camping. It ran great but did not charge the battery right away after opening it and setting it up. Instead I just filled it with gas connected the two cords for the batteries and ran it on its own for a couple minutes. Then I plugged in my travel trailer and ran the AC right away and it worked just fine but when we went dry camping I left the travel trailer plugged into it turned it on and ran it for about an hour right away with the AC before the overload light came on. Is it recommended that I run the generator for at least five minutes before plugging in the RV and start running the AC? I did just recently install a soft starter based off the recommendation from Westinghouse and it seem to do really good but I wanted to make sure I’m not missing something.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well always good to read the manual to understand your gen fully. The battery thing as far as charging it is so you don’t put a load on a low voltage battery that can prematurely damage it. Super important…? No not really but just something to consider as some gens can sit for months before being sold.
      When you get your gen ready you should fire it up and let it warm up fully about 3 mins maybe then plug in your trailer with everything off you should have no load on.
      Then once plugged into gen go ahead and turn on what ever in the trailer. But you don’t want the trailer hooked up and gen not running and then as soon as you fire up the gen the ac unit is turned on waiting for power which puts instant load on the gen, which is not recommended.
      Again though take a couple mins to read the manual as there is good info in it…👍🏼
      Thanks for the comment and thanks again for watching 👍🏼😃

      Hook the RV up to the generator using the 30 AMP cord. Start the generator (with it NOT in Econo mode) and let it run for a minute or so and then switch to Econo mode. Then go into your trailer and turn on your A/C or furnace (depending on the season) and then simply operate to like you normally do when hooked to a 30 AMP supply pedestal. Your generator will provide slightly more amperage than the 30 AMP power pedestal does, but you are still restricted by the RV/Trailer itself to 30 AMPS unless you have a 50 AMP RV/trailer setup.
      You should not be getting an overload light, especially if running a soft start (something like the MicroAir EasyStart). If you are getting an overload light on the generator then it is possible that the "generator" (basically an alternator) portion of the generator is having issues. It is possible that your soft start may not be functioning correctly or your compressor on the A/C unit may be going bad. You really need to see how much of a load is being drawn by the RV from the generator to know for sure.

      Only thing is double the maintenance but really, the maintenance is super easy on these little things. Also if one doesn’t start for some reason you still have one more.
      Hope this helps.

      @@johnnysweekends I see Westinghouse’s website has a chart for both the 30 amp and 50 amp kits and the wattage to expect out of each with different generator combos. The 30 amp only puts out 3600 due to it being 30 amp. Can I go up to the 50 amp kit to get the full doubled output I’m shooting for (5000/2500)? Is this safe to do? Anything to keep an eye on? Appreciate the quick reply.

      (5000/4400)*

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Westinghouse 4500 is 3700 rated watts at 30 amps
      The two smaller ones are 18.3 each. So you want a 50 amp parallel box and you’ll be good because most have a 30 amp and 50 built in. Even at almost 40 amps you could still use the 30 amp side. It will just trip if your running to much.

    Unfortunately, these are junk. Had the Cummin's re-brand (same genset, but with Cummins warranty authorized service locations that made it more convenient for service). I had several warranty replacements for these due to one reason or another. I did all the maintenance on the correct schedule on each replacement.
    Go with another equivalent option.

      Westinghouse is 899 on Amazon currently, predator 869 from Harbor Freight. Considering they are basically the same price what would you choose?

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The biggest two things with predator is how quiet it is and being there are a decent amount of harbor freights around for warranty exchange. But I have heard they are cracking down on that and not just taking any generator back for no reason. But some are still having luck.
      The Westinghouse has more power and more features and a Rv plug if that means anything along with remote start. So it is a really nice unit and it’s the same unit as the onan 4500.
      People have reported good service and warranty from customer service and others not. But I don’t hear a lot of problems with these units. They seem to hold up well.
      The biggest problem was the choke issue which I show a quick video on the problem which is just a wire unplugged .
      You may also wanna look at the new powerhorse 4500 which is a new version of the old and I assume predator will do a copy again like they did with the 3500.
      They are the same. The new 4500 PH is a little quieter and has more power.
      I for the price would rather have more power and features knowing that both last a long time and you can always buy a extended warranty from Amazon or northern tool which the power house come with a standard 2 year warranty verses the predator is only 90 days so you have to buy a extended warranty just in case.
      So I would be looking at Westinghouse or powerhouse now to be honest and Amazon has a good warranty program.
      Hope this helps..👍🏼😀
