It’s all about welcoming back the legendary King Mahabali. Described in early Hindu texts as a kind and generous king, Mahabali possessed a special nectar that granted him immortality. After many wars, the unbeatable Bali had conquered heaven and earth. Devas got worried and asked God Maha Vishnu for help. In response, Maha Vishnu transformed into a dwarf named Vamana and tricked Mahabali into granting him three paces of land. Vamana then expanded to an enormous size, covering heaven and earth in just two steps. When asked where to place the third step, Mahabali bravely offered his own head. Consequently, Mahabali was sent to Patala Loka. However, Maha Vishnu granted him a boon, allowing him to return to his homeland once a year to visit his kingdom.
History about him are found in Buddhist and Jain texts as well. He is known as Chao Krung Bhali in Thailand’s version of Hinduism.
Onam lasts for ten days, and features flower decorations called “pookalam,” traditional dances, and games. The festival’s highlight is the Onasadya feast, which includes up to 30 dishes that showcase Kerala’s cuisine. People of all religions celebrate Onam in Kerala, making it a time for families to come together

Celebrations apart, nice to have a festival that is completely non- violent in nature, the food and sweets are completely vegetarian, I mean the time this festival began, basically a harvest festival. The true history being, The emperor never ruled Kerala, in fact MAHABALI ruled a kingdom in ancient BRUJ ( between present day BHARUCH AND RANN OF KUTCH ). Also there is an ancient temple of VAMANA (sixth avatar of LORD VISHNU) in that precinct. It is believed that a ruler of mid- Kerala present day Kochi Kodungallur had once visited this VAMANA Temple, when he returned , to please Lord Vamana he built a temple there , present day PARAVOOR, the deity called THRIKKARAPPAN, after the inclusion of ABHRAHMIC faiths one later ruler ,to bring harmony togetherness among the people Onam was modified as for today and the history of Mahabali was adopted for the same.HAPPY ONAM to all.🙏👍

Onam is not just the return of king Mahabali. It's also the birth of lord Vamana, 5 th incarnation of Lord Vishnu onam is celebrated across kerelam as Vamana Jayanti. And Mahabali was sent to Pathala lokha aka sutala lokha.

Onam is a hindhu festival celebrated in kerala but after 2010 some other community members also started to celebrate onam internet and smart phones also played a huge role for that but after 2015 it is started celebrate widely in kerala but still mainly only in hindhu homes and temples and then a new narration also started to erupt like harvest festival etc.and nowdays many love jihad gangs also taking over onam festivels and it's celebrations in places like Malabar Bangalore dubai gulf etc to spread love jihad

As shown in some of the images, the lord vamana never kept his feet on mahabali as he was a noble king...the lord just placed his feet just above the head of mahabali without touching the head giving blessings with feet. It is called nigraha rupena anugraha....

It's celebrated by all irrespective of religion. Not a Hindu festival but a state festival. Wecelebrate the return of our King who is infact an asura. He defeated Indra and people loved his kingdom as everyone was treated equally. So for us keralites, it's the day of remembrance of our Great King Mahabali, and religion is the least important thing with respect to this festival. Ps : I'm a hindu, but I dont wish to celebrate onam as a hindu festival, it should always be celebrated as our state festival.

Until Bali Mahārāja achieves the position of King of heaven, he shall live on the planet Sutala, which was made by Viśvakarmā according to My order. Because it is especially protected by Me, it is free from mental and bodily miseries, fatigue, dizziness, defeat and all other disturbances. Bali Mahārāja, you may now go live there peacefully.

Srimad Bhagawata Purana the authentic scripture conveys that he was placed in Sutala and the gates of Sutala guarded by Vishnu and Lakshmi!!
Mahabali was also given boon of immortality and he wished to visit humans on the birthday of Vaamana Avatar of MahaVishnu.
In the Vaamana Avatar, Vishnu as a dwarf was awarded anything that could be measured by the three paadas of the dwarf (Vaamana).
Vaamana measured the earth (BhooLoka) with one paada, the sky (SuvarLoka) with another and as there wasn’t any visible place to measure the third, Mahabali offered his head (I.e. his ego /ahamkaar) indicating that his head was equal in measure to the two worlds already measured - such large was his ego !!
Vishnu therefore put his paada on his head and pushed him down to paataala Loka (which is below the earth- ie the other side of the globe !!
However, after his ego was extinguished , he was given the boon of immortality and thus raised to Sutala (meaning the level which is good - Good Level) protected by Vishnu and Lakshmi as gatekeepers!!
In the spiritual (AdhiAatmic) sense, this story is about how man can become immortal and rise to better levels by surrendering the ego!!
In the bhautik (AdhiBhautik) sense it is about the rise of the sun on sunrise from a dwarf state in the morning to growing larger and larger high up zenith in the afternoon and later again becoming the dwarf at sunset and becoming the guardian of the night ruled by demons (raatrincharas).
It can also be seen that paada in Sanskrit means foot as well as one quarter.
Thus three paadas means 3/4.
The sun is seen only in 3 positions while the 4th Paadam is on the other side of the globe which is hidden.
The three small stupas places at the centre of the circular orbital flower arrangements indicate sunrise, noon, and sunset the two small ones on either side and the tall one in the middle. The flower orbits indicate seasons that arise when the sun transits thru the 12 zodiac Rasis.

Nether Worlds in Sanskrit language is called Bila Svarga. Bila Svarga means : So-called Heavenly Planets. Bila Svarga are planets where the Danavas, the Daityas, the Asuras, etc. resides. And Bhagwan Vishu was so taken by Bali's devotion that he remained with Bali. Goddesses Lakshmi wanted Vishnu ji to return to Vaikunthlok. So she went to Bali and tied him a rakhi. Bali wanted to give a gift So she asked Bali to allow her to take Vishnu back to Vaikunth lok. Bali requested Vishnu ji to do so. Goddess Lakshmi was so pleased with Bali that she told Bali that for three days she would come to earth and shower her grace & prosperity on all . Hence we got Deepavali. People light diyas and decorate homes to welcome Goddesses Lakshmi on these 3 days.

And remember another major festival of hindus, holika dahan is also connected to prahalada and another great avataar of lord vishnu, shri narsimha avtaar. I have some corrections , Mahabali is a great devotee of Mahavishnu.Even mahavishnu likes him as he was the grandson of prahlada . Mahabali ruled all the 3 lokas . But ruling indraloka is not allowed as it can be given to only selected people in every yug (ie, mahavishnu said indra pathavi will be given to Mahabali in savarni yug) . So ruling indralok at that yug was wrong . Also Mahabali thought that he was the god of three lokas ,to end this pride Mahavishnu taken vamana avatar and asked 3 step land , Mahabali given the land and even allowed to take himself(body) , ending the superiority in Mahabali (as he thought land ,body is everything , but Vishnu makes him understand there is something more than this ,(soul)). For this mahavishnu gives blessings with his leg (in Hinduism giving blessings with leg by bhagvan is considered as luck and it is given rarely) many people misunderstand with the picture . Vamana avatar keeping leg on Mahabali is giving blessings and not sending him to patala . And the truth is Mahabali is in sutala (su : meaning good) .And sutala is guarded by mahavishnu himself to protect mahabhali . Many keralites don't even know onam is the birthday of vamana avatar .
