  • Artis Wodehouse pianolizes Scott Joplin's own 1916 piano roll of his great 1909 ragtime waltz composition, Pleasant Moments.
Wodehouse plays Joplin's roll (Connorized 10277) on a restored 1912 player piano made by Bush & Lane of Chicago. This instrument has been referred to as "the Bentley of player pianos". Restored by Paul Manganaro.
Wodehouse plays a recut from the rare original roll. The recut lacked the expression line inscribed on the original roll, so in order to create expression -- dynamics and tempo modification -- Wodehouse studied the original 1909 published sheet music score.
Video filmed 4/28/20 in South Hero, Vermont.

I never heard this Joplin roll before: so wonderful to hear it with his own embellishments!

I have a Connerized roll that looks similar to this. It is A a perfect day. I think it’s about the age of this roll. But I don’t have any original Joplin rolls…
    Yet:)

Nice performance, very atmospheric. It is interesting to note that bass notes are being held down which would be impossible to do in live performance with two hands. This is an important clue to interpreting these pieces.

Thanks for listening. Yes piano rolls were often edited this way I believe in part to give a sustained sound while avoiding the possibility of over-pedalling.

This was most likely done by the roll arranger / editor who created the arranger based on Mr Joplin’s performance (adding bass runs, octave doubling etc). I say this because it is unlikely the craftsman style Autopiano upright piano which Connorized used as their recording piano, had a sostenuto pedal. However, nothing is impossible and some action makers like Wessell, Nickel & Gross DID make upright actions with sostenuto mechanism, although they were only installed in a very few rare and expensive makes and models of upright piano.

You should do a CD of all the Joplin rolls. I'd buy it!

Yeah, it was found in 2006 by Robert Perry, apparently in the wrong box on E bay of all places. It’s a long lost Joplin roll people have looking for a very long time.
