- Artis Wodehouse pianolizes Scott Joplin's own 1916 piano roll of his great 1903 ragtime composition, Weeping Willow.
Wodehouse plays Joplin's roll (Connorized 10277) on a restored 1912 player piano made by Bush & Lane of Chicago. This instrument has been referred to as "the Bentley of player pianos". Restored by Paul Manganaro.
It is thought that Joplin preferred slow tempi for his ragtimes, but Wodehouse follows the roll speed marked on the roll and the expression line printed on the roll which guides her dynamics.

It wouldn’t do his music justice, far too complex and dynamically intrinsic to be pulled off by a paper roll. Notice how none of the articulations change in the video - articulation is 80% of classical music

Dear Ms. Wodehouse, I applaud you for posting this and other "foot pumped" piano roll interpretations on TH-cam!. Electrifying a pump player is OK, but it really removes the "feeling" from the rendered music. Coin operated piano are a different "animal" altogether! When restored properly even these "boisterous" pianos are capable of more subtle, but recognizable expression to the music being played.
Beautiful, Ms. Wodehouse! My jaw just about hit the floor when I saw that that was an original Joplin Connerized roll and not a QRS recut; your use of expression here is nothing short of stunning! Thank you for sharing.

This is fantastic! Also it's funny how there is a misconception about "playing fast." This is the correct tempo aka "slow." However I read people used to play songs way faster than this (like showing off). That was considered too fast, but not this tempo. So folks get it confused and think it was meant to be played even slower than this, which I feel is incorrect.
Its an interesting question about tempo. What we hear across the board on old 78 phonograph disc recordings of standard classical works (and ragtime) are tempi that we would, today, consider "fast". On the other hand, the early recorded artists were up against the time limitation of a 78 disc side. However, because "fast" tempi was pervasive, I think there's something to the idea that people in the early years of the 20th C. conceived of music to be played "faster" than we want to hear, today.

I´m interested to find this original piano sheet, the same like how Joplin plays this. But I didn´t find it :-( In those which i found there is differences to your video for example in bars eight and at the end of section A. It´s often a pity when a composer does a work and thinks which chords are the best - and then someone makes an "easy to play version". Do you know where I can find this original and more difficult version sheet? Ofcourse I can try to make corrections to my sheet, but if there is the original publishing possible to find, I would ofcourse appreciate it and the work Joplin has done as composer.
What do the pedals on this player piano do?
Make a vacuum in the system which powers the player stack.

I do wonder, though, about your choice of tempo. Joplin famously advised:
*"Do not play this piece fast. Ragtime should never be played fast."*
Do you think this tempo is correct?
Please read the description I posted. I am following exactly the roll speed marked and the expression line. Whether these were Joplin's choices cannot be proved or disproved at this point. However, they are artifacts of the original roll, and as such, my goal was to work with this authentic information and try to make something musical from these instructions. Again, please read what i've written in my description.
@@ArtisWodehouse The tempo has much to do with how fast the piano plays itself. The only way to get accurate tempo from piano rolls is to put in a test roll and gauge how fast the paper advances. The tempo marked on the roll is feet per minute not beats per minute. If this piano is calibrated correctly then this is indeed the intended tempo.

Never saw such a short stroke on the pedals.
My strokes are short because my technique is to fill the bellows, and facilitate my accents and dynamics primarily with my foot pumping. I believe I've developed this technique due to the superbly tight bellows of my player piano and from my experience as a player of the European harmonium.
The stack and pumps are so tight that it takes almost nothing to build up a vacuum.
I think Joplin sounds good either way, but if you slow it down, you really feel it.

You know, there's a theory going around that these rolls were never played by Joplin but were played by William Arlington who was the main Connorized ragtime arranger. I believe this is true, his style is so similar to these rolls.
Great version by Scott Joplin, but I notice the operator pumping with different strength throughout. A pump piano you must pump consistently. Never seen a piano like this.
Please note my many videos concerning the issue of pumping and expression. Joplin's rolls have an expression line printed on them throughout, ranging from forte to pianissimo. In order to achieve this it is necessary to modify one's pumping and use the levers under the keys. There's no "rule" that you must pump consistently. The goal is an expressive performance, taking into consideration the expression line original to the roll.
This piano is tight enough that you can coast and not pump as hard, the slower or lighter you pump, the quieter the music gets.
Why so fast?
As the uploader has stated, this is the specified speed of the roll. I believe Joplin's admonition not to play his music too fast was directed at players who would play much faster than this to show off their technical prowess.
@@dielaughing73 Well, the player piano might also not be adjusted right. The tempo states not bpm but the feet per minute that roll over the tracker bar. The roll should be played at 8 feet per minute and then, ONLY THEN, will we know the intended speed of this roll.
