    Love these videos. I am much the same as you. Buying old telescopes and mounts and fixing them up. Nice!

      Thanks for watching. It really is a surprisingly fun hobby, especially if you can find them at a really good price (due to being broken). That gives you budget to really add valuable features.

    I have the same mount and tripod. Couldn't wait to stop using the tripod. Complete hassle to set up / tear down. On the other hand, the mount is a delight to use, and is easy to polar align. Just put it on a better tripod.

      I'm used to very low-end tripods, so this seemed like an upgrade to me. But I've seen some of the super high-end tripods that look rock solid. Thanks for watching!

    Such a good feeling to give things a second life. I just “rescued” a Vixen Polaris eq mount. Good job!

    Great video as always strangely enough last weekend I stripped & regreased a Skywatcher EQ5 mount & I brought my other halfs mount back from the dead an EQ3-2, although I call it a Franken mount now as some of the gears were damaged in the mount so I swapped it for an old CG4 I had laying around which is identical & made by Synta I believe.

      Thank you for watching. I love the name "Franken-mount", lol. Clear skies!

    You make it look too easy. Especially the taste test. On the 1st day of vacay, I noticed my Sky Watcher Star Adventurer appears to have a broken shaft on the mode selection. It no workie. Now that I am back, pulled out the Allen wrenches and started taking screws off. I'll send you a message about the lens option later today.

      Haha, it's all on the editing. It was 106 degrees on this one and my camera kept overheating. Challenging for sure. Clear skies!

    So glad I found this (via Cloudynights page). Yours looks to be exactly the Orion Skyview mount I have (except mine has motors). My problem is the DEC axis is completely frozen. I suppose if I get my polar alignment correct it should be a non-issue (right?) but it irks me. Any tips on freeing it up? I've tried to drip penetrating oil in, no luck yet. I'm nervous about gripping the gear to get some leverage on it.

    • @reflactor
      @reflactor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you disassemble it very carefully, I bet you can find the problem. Either a screw is bound up or there is rust. Are you able to remove both axis lock screws? Take lots of pictures as you disassemble it - that is a game changer when putting it back together.

    • @GarethRidout
      @GarethRidout ปีที่แล้ว

      @@reflactor I can remove lock screws no problem, my first thought was that would be a good place to start dripping in a penetrant. Thanks for your responses!

    Do you know what the scope weight limit might be for this mount?

    • @reflactor
      @reflactor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure, but I'd guess at least 10 to 12 pounds. I used it for my 127mm Mak-Cass telescope and it could handle more than that. Clear skies!

    Thank you for this excellent presentation! Would you be so kind to help me, how I can fix the declination centerline? It isn't rotating. Regards from Hungary.

    • @reflactor
      @reflactor  ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally speaking, you have to point the telescope at a known target (for example, Sirius), then using an app or star map with a coordinate grid, read the right-ascension and declination angles and set them on the telescope - the setting circles are adjustable. From that point on, you should be able to find anything if given the right-ascension and declination angles.

    • @imre2784
      @imre2784 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the quick response! I think I was misunderstood. There is no adjustment difficulty,; - the declination axis does not rotate. I have to take it apart and apply with WD40. How can I take it apart? I removed the mounting screws and the top yet. I see the aluminum gear weehls....and...how to proceed next?@@reflactor

    What to do if a dobsonian telescope getting rust😭

    • @reflactor
      @reflactor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends. A rusty Dobsonian probably won't affect the view, but if it's messing with operations (trunions, focuser, etc.), then you may need to sand down the rust and repaint it.

      @@reflactor someone told me to coat the outer part of the optical tube with epoxy... Should i do that?

    • @reflactor
      @reflactor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@adarsh2919 Well, that would certainly give it a hard shiny coating, but that's a lot of epoxy. If the entire thing is rusty, I would recommend doing a good sanding job and then paint it with a primer.
