How about choosing your starter by knowing where it spawns/how you can get it like routes or eggs or trades
Wanted to suggest an idea similar to the video I saw on Patterrz' channel.
You open 6 pokemon packs and choose a pokemon out of each one to build a team with.
If you get a full art, secret rare or any other special variant of card you get to pick the ability for your mon, if not you randomize the ability.
AND THEN YOU BATTLE!

Here’s a challenge: Have a choice between 3 Pokémon, but the Pokémon the two of you choose will have their stats averaged with the other’s same stats.
Choose a good Pokémon, but it’s likely to have its best stats nerfed and makes the other guy’s stats better. Choose a bad Pokémon, but it gets its stats buffed by the other guy’s choice.
For example, one of you chooses Scizor and the other chooses Giratina. The average stats between the 2 are: 110, 115, 110, 77/78, 100, 77/78. Most of the stats make Scizor stronger, but Giratina gets a small boost to its Attack stat.

Hoopa's form changes by having the Prison Bottle item used on it outside of battle (unless they changed it)
