  • On the second part of this trip, we checked out historic Bickel Camp and all of it's amazing machinery, equipment, vehicles, structures and just relics in general! There is just so much to see and check out around here. After checking out the camp we continued offroading and were able to find several cabins and even the old post office from a neighboring ghost town. Lots going on in this video so I hope you guys enjoy this one!

A buddy and myself rode our dirtbikes to the Bickel Camp when a Mr. Bickel was still living there. I am 80 now and that must have been in the 1990's. I rode a KTM EXC 250. I still ride a KTM 200 on the desert. Usually trailer camp on Searles Station Rd. David Smith

That sounds pretty amazing...and very cool that you are still riding!
Would love to hear any background. I rode my 300 out to Burro Schmidt tunnel a few years ago, walked through and back then checked out that camp and the other cabins nearby.
There's also some borax mines in that area that are pretty cool.

It's strange to see that ol' 320 sitting out in the desert in what appears to be completely original condition. It looks like it would drive!

Really enjoyed this adventure and I want to thank the people for all their hard work in providing us with a unique look at all the artifacts and relics in such a wonderful layout!! At 1:38, looks like a Water Drilling Rig. 4:39, Dearborn, Michigan. 6:17, Stove looks like Butane or Natural Gas; not Oil Burning. 17:22, #14 Char-Glow Made In Japan for DE Sanford Co STP (or SFP) . 18:11, That is a Jack for lifting a car or other heavy things. 19:34, Yes that goes to a Mop. Good call. Keep up the wonderful explores!!

The engine that you looked at immediately after the Datsun pickup is a 1948 or earlier Cadillac flathead V8. And that transmission bolted to it is General Motors first successful automatic transmission.

At 3:20, the first several cans are for water, not gas. Note the caps are different from the cans further back. The weathered olive drab paint suggests military usage. Mfg dates are usually on the bottom, sometimes under the handle. Your "meat grinder" (18:03) is a car jack.

The crane is actually a portable drilling rig for boreholes . It was built on an old vehicle chassis. Seena few of these in the Australian outback.

19:03...canteen. Look at the bottom for a date such as 1944 , 1945, be a WW2 steel canteen. If no date it's an aluminum copy. That international scout is a tank, they run good

That first machine looks like something used to make holes. I've seen some old well drilling machines that resemble that. Some drill in a rotary fashion and others just drop a heavy cylinder repeatedly boring a hole. This looks like the sort that drops the bit. If that's what it is

    • @straybullitt
      @straybullitt ปีที่แล้ว

That's exactly what that was! A Cable Tool Drilling Rig.
And a home-made one at that! It looks like it was cobbled together using old automobile frames. I'll bet that ol' Bickel built that himself. He was known for that sort of ingenuity.
Cable Tool machines were the first effective drill rigs. Before them, it was basically shovels and buckets to drill a well.

Your explorations are very cool man, bold and brave.
You are your own man, watch your rear view mirror.
It appears the daddy’s boy from Vegas is hot in trail of your ideas for example the tunnel.
Just sayin. Good stuff though and nice Jeep✌️

What uou were calling a crain and jack leg is actually a cable tool drill rig and what you didn't want to drop your gopro down was a well .

Purple glass signifies that they added a little bit of manganese ore to the mix. When the silica and other ingredients have a traces of iron, it makes the glass yellowish and unpleasant looking-- adding a little bit of manganese ore to the mix corrects that and makes for clear glass again---but sun exposure and time eventually brings out the purple color from the manganese.

I met Walt Bickel a couple of times back in the early 80s when he was still working the claim. The BLM came in and kicked him off some time in the mid 80s when they were going after "illegal homesteaders". The BLM claimed that he did not have to live on the claim to work it. My friend bought a couple of small nuggets from him. Mr. Bickel was gruff and stern but also friendly. He was an interesting man to talk to. There used to be more cars and trucks around his work shed but the BLM hauled many of them away.
