    In this episode I (Kale) sit down to analyse some real life examples of beginner-intermediate surfing mistakes which restrict progression in the sport.
    Under analysis are taking off, paddling & speed generation, 3 major areas to work on if you're interested in progressing from beginner to intermediate and beyond.

    One tip i would add is that pumping the wave for speed is very much a “feel” thing. If you try to force it with the board and not your body you’ll end up just chopping your board up and down side to side without gaining any real speed. If you’ve ever ridden a skate board and pumped a pool or a ramp its essentially the same feeling. Compress down and spring back up and you will feel yourself start to flow with it.

    Started surfing in April 19 after watching one of your vids, brought a smoothstar (incredible when sea flat) thanks to your recommendation, watching your vids and applying your techniques has lifted my surfing skills way beyond where I would have been without them. Awesome work boys keep em coming

    Nice vid Kale. Some of the details of the take off. Often I get some of these. Too much in a hurry after paddle back out, and try to take off with sub optimal positioning (too late). Water weighs down my legs, and I get stuck. I am determined to root out all of these struggles and have fun doing it.

      Although I'm not the person you asked, I'd like to share the discovery I made after learning many of these maneuvers.
      Things like snaps, roundhouse cutbacks, or floaters may look like tricks done for flourish but each has its own function. In order to allow you to ride any given wave to completion, you'll need to eventually master each one.
      Every wave I rode while I was at your level looked pretty much the same. I'd pop up, pump down the line as fast as I could and off the shoulder of the wave. That was enough for me, for a while.
      One day, however, I spotted the shoulder before I got there and did an ugly midface checkturn (kind of like a 60° kickturn with a skateboard) towards the beach and that bled off just enough time/speed to allow the wave to wall up more and I could continue pumping down the line and somewhat stay in rhythm. That was the first step towards a snap, and I did it kind of instinctively.
      I guess what I'm getting at here, is that your local break is probably already asking you to do some maneuver to keep going, it's just a matter of recognizing what that is and getting comfortable enough to improvise.

    Hey Kale! I've been surfing on my own for a few weeks now, and I can take-off pretty well, and can angle the take-off when I get it right. My biggest issue is that I tend to pearl, that's usually why I fall. I'm riding a 9'6 longboard, do you think it's just my positioning on the board? I never have an issue in less-steep, like 3 footers, but when I get to chest-height waves which are usually a bit steeper, I pearl a majority of the time. Any tips?

    • @brandontaylor2790
      @brandontaylor2790 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. My main board is a 9' Mick Fanning Beastie, and I usually put my toes right on the leash mount, but depending on how much you weigh, you may have to adjust back a bit if you're nosediving a lot.

    • @toptenmoment8228
      @toptenmoment8228 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scooch a bit back and arch your back when paddling

    • @KalesBroccoli
      @KalesBroccoli 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Long boards are always harder to turn on a big wave and will naturally bog a little more with the big rails. In saying that, ensure you get in early and keep your back foot heavy over the fins so you can do a little kick stall turn if its really hollow. :)

  • @grathe987
    @grathe987 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Kale - I love your videos - I think there's a ton of good info that i can use ONCE I overcome this first issue!
    I'm new to surfing and have caught a bunch of small waves. My problem (among many) is that I regularly get caught on the lip, dangling over the cliff, riding the top of the wave, rather than riding down the face. I've been comfortable enough to lean into the nose to drop in and have landed it without issue usually. But I KNOW that's not how I should be catching waves. I shouldn't be caught catching the top lip and dropping in every time. As far as I can tell, I'm paddling more than enough and I feel that I've "caught the wave" before I even try to get up. I can't seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong though!! Can you put out a video explaining this issue?? I can't be the only person dropping in every time.

    • @relativetruth8889
      @relativetruth8889 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greg, you could try paddling into the wave on more of an angle...if the beach is 90degrees and the wave zero, aim for 45... it's a short cut to getting up and going... good luck.

    Watching this video I realized one fundamental question. The guy in the minute 7:25 pops up after having first stretched his arms fully as opposed to pop up in just one big push from laying down.
    I have seen this in professional surfers and it's different from what most content on the Internet suggests. I wonder whether that is what we all should aim for, if it's just a different style or if it depends on the board or conditions. I am really curious about this and I would like to know if I should try to do it

    • @KalesBroccoli
      @KalesBroccoli 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Angel! Yeah interesting - I dont think there is one secret to popping up - but rather the sequence of movements gets really ingrained in the nervous system and becomes automatic regardless of where you are on the wave or how you are paddling - that's the goal anyway!

    I recently saw an insta-post by another guy, where there were 2 different kinds of paddle strokes, a wider one (travel-stroke) that`s used most of the time (that doesn`t go too deep), and a narrower one, where you reach further in front of you and go deeper, that`s only used for paddling for a wave or in emergency-situations. I realised, that as a beginner, I got exhausted pretty quick because of using the harder paddle stroke like most of the time^^ problem is, I already trained some endurance with fitness-bands at home but don`t really get into the "travel" stroke.
    could you also do a video about that or send a link, in case I missed it? it would be great!
    besides that thank you very much for all the videos, it`s really good to watch them for some advice :)
    cheers from germany

    • @relativetruth8889
      @relativetruth8889 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cristophe it helps to watch other surfers in the water, which i guess you probably do. As far as this paddling thing, imo i think you're over-analysing it a little, the more time in the water on your board the less thought will go into what you are doing. I've seen some very odd paddling styles over the years... (the Burleigh boyz a case in point)... yet it all boils down to the same things... getting out and getting into waves. Trying for deep lunge follow through perfection is bollocks... keep it brisk and smooth. You keep your momentum better by keeping busy with yr rhythm. Long-winded huh!?... and just my op...
      Keep doing yr thing... tune into Ben Gravy / J.o.b. / and Mason Ho if you havn't already...
      (Of course the most important thing is your position on the board when paddling... this guy has covered that i think and feel free to call me out for saying the obvious...)

    Please don’t tell me I’m the only one who sees the shark at 1:35

      it just looks like a black object. A rock maybe. At the very least does it resemble a shark.

      Travis Travis I mean, the shape resembles a shark with the black object fin sticking outta the water.

      @@on0pe773 I see the black object but for me I don't think its a shark. I got no idea whether it is or isnt but just doesnt look too deep there. I'd also assume you'd see a bit more of the shark if it was like that in the wave face

      Travis Travis true, true, I thought it was a shark but maybe I’m wrong.

      @@on0pe773 I might be wrong too Ano, it could be a shark. Hope it wasnt, that would be pretty scary
