Brilliant video Mike. Something you don’t see very often. Right place right time. Fantastic capture of the mishap. Thanks for posting. Have a great year. Kind regards C&A
A serious crash occurred with 67002 at Lawrence Hill (Bristol) on 1 November 2000, when a Royal Mail train passed two red signals and ran into the back of a coal train at around 3:30am. The mail train, hauled by 67002 "Special Delivery" with 67012 at the rear, was travelling at 50 mph when the incident occurred. The locomotive climbed over the back of the coal train, coming to rest 40 yards (37 m) later on top of a coal wagon and against the A420 Church Road bridge. The driver of the mail train suffered a broken arm and cuts to the face and chest, but there were no other injuries.[38][39][40][41] The incident was initially suspected to be caused by faulty brakes, but was later found to be caused by misunderstanding and incorrect use of the locomotive's brake pipe isolation valve by railway staff.[39][42]
Love the audio-fart between dissolves . Caught by surprise. Lol. Beautiful photography. Love the long zoom up .... You can tell it's a long zoom out, but it captures the shot perfectly! Shortly afterwards, the audio-fart during the dissolve occurs. Huff yard I think. Great shots of a longass train !! Must've cost a lot of patience... Thank You !
There is footage just after the event as the fire brigade arrive. It’s in the BBC archive. I know as I was the cameraman on call that night. Can’t believe it was so long ago!
Brakes failed coming down the incline from Bristol Parkway, so momentum kept the train moving until it hit the coal train moving slowly ahead or her at Lawrence Hill. Does that help
Note the scene at 14:53. Was there once another line there, passing freight loop perhaps ? I wonder how much track rationalisation has caused accidents delays since it started.
Mike Wilcock, your comment reminds me of some railroad enthusiasts I've known who have, forgive the pun, one track interests. The driver jumped out lineside before the loco hit the bridge and broke his shoulder, but made a full recovery so I understand. Have known him for years. Interesting video, brings back a few memories! Thanks for sharing.
I have been retired for almost two years now so have lost contact with him. The last I heard he was still on the railway but not driving. I will tell him if I see him again. Thanks for the offer!
Well lucky for Fatt Hatt, I came back from the works with our favorite number 1 the day after. I feel not enough credit was given to us, as we were still in disgrace from the incident with the station masters house. The railcar is certainly more enjoyable to work with than Diesel himself.
Percy's predicament series 2 of Thomas the tank engine and friends. Percy crashed into a break van and sat on top of it the break van was squashed under him. Percy also delivers the post all over the island of Sodor as well.
What I saw from the video shot from the ship (in slow motion of course), was the straps on one end broke & after that end hit the dock, the other end broke in kind. The ship's crew was not keeping up on their equipment maintenance.
@@TheMichaelWilcock2016Railways There is another video on You Tube (only 30 seconds long) where the supporting cables break at both ends and the locomotive crashes to the dock. Do a search for "How not to unload a locomotive"
The coal train was stopped at a signal. The class 67 was running down the gradient behind it and the brakes failed so was unable to stop and the momentum pushed the loco up over the end of the coal train...................OK?
Built-in 1999-2000 by Alstom at Valencia in Spain as a subcontractor for General Motors model JT42 HW-HS HAVE A LOOK AT MY OTHER VIDEOS for more clips of loco deliveries at Newport Docks including 70012 that was dropped on board
They were the last 2 wagons the loco rode up onto and then hit the bridge The coupling broke as coal train was moving at the time...........is that clear enough?
Thanx! I convinced myself that the 67002 was pulling the coal train. Just a matter of my skewed perspective. I hope that the crew was not seriously hurt. I'll assume that the loco was a write off?
So, the brand new engine was put on a flatcar that made it too high to go under a bridge, then promptly smashed on it's delivery run and crashed into (again) by a runaway train? ??? Sorry, I'm not familiar with this incident but it does look really bad.
You must have missed my comments on the incident? Loco 67002 was travelling down the incline and the brakes failed and it hit the train in front and the loco was pushed up onto the coal wagons as the train was approaching the bridge. We don't move trains on the back of a coal train here in the UK !!.................Thanks for watching
I was the only non-rail person at Lawrence Hill and I had special permission to be inside the Docks at Newport, It's knowing the right people ( which takes a long time to establish)
Well since this happened in 2000, there has been plenty of time to ask: 1. Why was the mail train on the same tracks as the coal freight train, regardless if the mail train was a run-away or not. Number two. From the clips it appears that the "back" end of the of the mail train hit the locomotive and sending it over the coal cars. So why was the mail train going "backwards"? has this been explained? And number 3. Did you make any video of the clean up and locomotive being lifted off the cars and tracks?
All our trains travel of the same track if going in the same direction; don't yours? It wasn't a runaway until the driver could not apply the brakes on the decline. No 2. These trains have locos at both ends as they reverse into some stations and the driver changes ends. Clean up was at night and I live 60 miles away and do not work for the railway and would not be allowed on their site............hope this helps. Mike in Wales.
Fault was cause when the driver isolated brake pipe, trapping air, so brakes stayed released. Therefore train ran away. All he had to do was hit emergency brake plunger. Panic I guess, and did not do it , he fractured his shoulder I believe when he jumped off . Could have been a lot worse if that coal train was not there. Could have run into Bristol TM . Brake isolation and parking brake isolation notices not very clear on the 67's.
No, it's a 114 mile round trip from home and no times were available. Most German built EMU's come by rail nowadays. Spain might be a bit further away but I'd be much quicker I reckon (including loading and unloading). Although the gauge difference might also have been an issue back in the day.
Dont Spanish railways use a different gauge to the rest of Europe or did I miread that somewhere else? That being the case they cannot be driven from Spain through France to the UK? Although the high speed trains run on standard, I dont think they'd allow effectively cargo to run on these rails.

Before I retired I was called for a light engine job and had to pickup a dead engine that had been dead for three days so no air pressure on her. My conductor described the settings in the cab and only hooked up the brake pipe couldn't get a proper brake test so I finally got out and hooked up the main resivour hose and after we charged up the mains resivour tanks she passed the brake test with flying colors. Be willing they didn't hook up all the mu air lines. If the had the engineman would have been able to stop her with the engine brake alone.
Yes you need to connect the reservoir pipe to build up air pressure in a dead loco to get the brakes working but the coaches on the mail train are perfectly capable of being operated on a single pipe, the air from the brake pipe cross feeds into the coach air reservoirs.
"The incident was initially suspected to be caused by faulty brakes, but was later found to be caused by misunderstanding and incorrect use of the locomotive's brake pipe isolation valve by railway staff."
Force is a function of mass and velocity, with several hundreds of tons of train it doesn't take much velocity to create an awful lot of force. Given the laws of motion, it requires the same force to stop an object in motion as it already posseses.

Did that old 47 haul 8 67s? If that is the case why are we buying locos outside the UK? We invtented the railways, so why is our government destroying our manufacturing capabilities, why have they been destroying our railways, why isn't anyone doing anything about it? why am i sitting on my ass watching videos on utube? I'm having a break, eating my dinner, then I'll back on facebook to campaign against building on the old docks in Porthcawl, I'm sick about them closing the Porthcawl Railway as it is. I'll soon be on the streets begging for help. I am doing this at 70 years old.
Hello Peter. I'm in my 80th year and can understand your feelings. We bought all our 66 from Canada, 67s/68s from Spain. All the loco builders in the UK closed years ago due to the fact they didn't invest in new plant etc so when EWS wanted 66s they was nobody to supply them in the UK. End of story.
A government that encourages British manufacturers to build British designed and built locomotives! the Americans do it, the Germans do it, the French do it and so do the Japanese. Why can't we...we invented them?

It was biult in Spain by VOSSLOH, not Alstom... EMD sold off its factory in Spain...due to the economic crisis
in the USA ...
Thanks, I'm only going by what I was told when they were delivered at Newport Docks.
Don’t forget they were built in 1999 and the Valencia factory was Alstom back then. It was sold to Vossloh in 2005.
13.04 and later. Personnel without hard hats!
European personnel aren't as aware as UK staff were 18 years ago!
And the world record for a scene shot with the most camera angles goes to...
I try to make my videos interesting and show the scene, not just the loco; thanks for watching.. was this 17 yrs ago??
The Fat Manager must have been furious, and no talk about being a useful engine this time.
Sure, you're right. Some nasty diesels distracted me while I was typing )
some really STUPID railroad personnel.
A very rare " brake fault " At least nobody was seriously injured
"The incident was initially suspected to be caused by faulty brakes, but was later found to be caused by misunderstanding and incorrect use of the locomotive's brake pipe isolation valve by railway staff."
Railway not railroad
How the fuck did it fly on to the coal wagon and UN couple that must of been pretty fast for that to Happen
Momentum provided by the weight of the stock behind the loco pushed it onto the wagons and the coupling broke.
Why the need to sware ?
It's not used as a swear but to express the surprise as more of an extreme manor.
Just looks bad in print....................ok
Force is a function of mass and velocity, with several hundreds of tons of train it doesn't take much velocity to create an awful lot of force. Given the laws of motion, it requires the same force to stop an object in motion as it already posseses.
Lol I have freedom of speech cunts
I HAVE 8 CATS,, 4 BLACK,, 2 GINGER TABBYS,, 1 GINGER,, 1 CHAMPAGNE,,
What's your point......................Mike; video producer
Nah, it'll buff out.
And a chip and scratch repair pen
Not often you see a 67 on a coal train.
You're the first person to notice that...............well done! Mike in snowly Wales
OI you can't park that there!!
the conducter was druken
In hindsight jumping over the coal train was not one of the better ideas that day.
Well the good lord above has made some changes , seems time to leave the coal in the ground and use the clean green renewable resources provided by the Holly Lord )
THAT HAS TO BE GREEN! A locomotive that runs on holly leaves?
Loco will be OK but running in only one direction lol.....
Problem with heavy works is to many jobs worth pen pusher going out trying to look important and climb up the bosses arse then u have the real workers bam boozled with rules health and safety he makes a mistake and on half these mistakes I'd tell have the shirt wearing shites if not needed jog on wasting my time as well as everyone else's
Just 1 mistake when coupling the P.O. vans to the loco caused all this, human error
Millions of dollars in damages which will cost consumers in the end because someone didn't do their job and check the brakes.
We all make mistakes; that's wht we have insurance.do you?
I only wish that all class 66s, 67s and 70s would all have the same fate!
What alternative would you offer?
A government that encourages British manufacturers to build British designed and built locomotives! the Americans do it, the Germans do it, the French do it and so do the Japanese. Why can't we...we invented them?
ss That is one of very many reasons I voted Leave!B-)
