  • Death's Door is a charming dungeon crawler that is more about relaxation and exploration than it is tense combat or sophisticated item economies. Those seeking deeper, more challenging gameplay will be underwhelmed, but those looking for something clever, elegant and at times emotional will not be disappointed.
    Thanks to Devolver Digital for the review code.

    Got a lot of feedback here about the 'exclusive' section. In hindsight, I regret including that. Some people said it was about platform bias, but it was just a few weeks ago that I called out Square for making the latest FFVII Remake DLC a PS5 exclusive. Tbh when it comes to exclusive deals, I think something different about each of them because each one is a little bit different.
    I think this vid was a good example of what happens when you try to talk about that stuff in a review - it just becomes a distraction. A lot of the comments section was about that when it should have been about the game.
    So I take feedback, and I agree. I'll likely talk about this sort of stuff in the weekly news show (when its relevant) but I'll keep the exclusive discussions out of the reviews (except when it's really vital to talk about).
    Thanks for the feedback.

      What bothers me about this is that reviewers keep demanding small studios to port their games to as much platforms as possible, while the big first party ones can have it easy and develop for just one. I mean, you people know that porting a game to different platforms takes time and resources, right?

      Or how far the engines, assets, tools etc. has come. Two people farming an entire field using plough and bull, thats something. But give them tractor and modern technology, it becomes everyday stuff. Not that it takes away from the creativity of the indie devs, but it gives them more time to engage in actual creative work. For example, Nanite in UE5 eliminates the need for retopologizing and creating different LODs for many many assets. Usually, it's a very time consuming, mechanical work, to the point most big studios outsource those work to other countries. And UE5 removed that roadblock for indie devs. Give these people, who are working so hard on the tools, their due respect as well.

    9:57 This is untrue, because you do in fact regain your "ammunition" by hitting some objects such as mushrooms and vases or enemies. See 10:04 where you get those white slots back by hitting the big guy. Also, some enemies shoot projectiles which can be reflected back to whatever. Personally, I found the combat really enjoyable, easily on par with Hollow Knight which at first seems simple, but offers a lot of options in the end. Get a few hits with your melee weapon, dodge and hit the enemy with projectiles, charge up a strong attack and swing it out. Death's Door is definitely one of the strongest indie competitors this year.

      Oh man. At this point, he finally uses a ranged spell, depleting all his ammo, then immediately after refills it by attacking the enemy with the melee weapon. But the voice over says "you typically won't have a source of ammo nearby", which couldn't be further from the truth. Every enemy is a source of ammo. And for every puzzle that requires ranged spells, there are actually other sources of ammo nearby.
      Well, yea. This game is about discovery and exploration. If you miss something like this, the game won't explain it to you. You have to find things out by yourself.

    Note about the exclusivity: Given the team size (2 people + artists), developing for fewer platforms (especially just PC and XBox, which I guess are very similar to develop for) saves a lot of time. Especially if 1 of the skipped consoles is Switch (Switch ports can be quite hard by itself).

    Making this game exclusive was actually probably a good choice for them since they are a small studio, they could use the Microsoft funds for all that polish, and it’s also hard for small studios to release games for multiple platforms all at once anyways and no one is buying a Switch for Hades but that didn’t stop them from making it a timed exclusive so what’s different here

    • @weirdslime262
      @weirdslime262 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I don't know if Hades was intentionally a timed exclusive as much as Supergiant only had the resources to port it to one console, they're still a pretty small studio after all and have their no crunch policy and whatnot. They spent a fair amount of Hades's development time rewriting the engine they make their games on just so porting anything after Hades would become easier in future. They only ported it to the portable console first because it's a natural fit for the game, and the ports to the other two consoles are only coming just over half a year after it launched.
      After launch they quickly realised that the game was popular enough to be worth porting to the other two. It's the reason why they never bothered porting Pyre to Switch despite porting Bastion and Transistor well after those games launched. It just didn't make economic sense despite the fact that Pyre is both a superb game and a perfect fit for the Switch, simply because it isn't critically acclaimed.

    • @anthonytitone
      @anthonytitone 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@weirdslime262 I agree but my point is just that since they knew Hades wasn’t coming to X box and PlayStation at launch it would have benefitted their budget if they were able to sign an exclusive deal and they would still be able to release the game on x box and PlayStation if it did well (which in hindsight it did extremely well) so with Death’s Door it’s possible that Acid Nerve didn’t have the resources for a PlayStation and/or Switch port at launch so an exclusive deal would just be free money, and if their deal with x box is timed they can still release it on PlayStation and/or Switch if it does well

    • @weirdslime262

Like sure, they could try the game and think it may be worth it, but this doesn't strike me as a game with enough WOW factor for Microsoft to bother. Especially since it isn't on gamepass either, and I'd like to think that Microsoft would mandate that for any exclusives. I feel like the more likely reason is that the Xbox and PC architecture are so similar that Xbox just happened to be the easiest console to port it to. The only exception would be if Devolver has a contract with Microsoft that opens the possibility for any game they publish.

      And, you can also upgrade each of your 4 powers if you find the right secret locations. For e.g. the flame power can be upgraded to burn your enemies for damage over time.
      The powers aren't all the same either. The bomb has AoE damage and consumes 2 mana. The hookshot is a quick way to pull yourself towards an enemy.

MS's old policy regarding indies during the 360 generation didn't help with their case on top of their XB1 fiasco. Those two factors made games media to jail Playstation as 'the home of quality indies.'
      Fast forward to these past 4 years, when PS's award winning first parties started to release in a regular cadence, Sony essentially tossed indies to the wayside. If you're not an indie dev of notoriety, you basically have no chance of being seen on the PS store.
      In fact, a couple weeks back, a bunch of indie devs were basically burning their bridges with Sony, saying they had to pay an exorbitant fee ($25,000) just to get placement on the front page of the PS store. One dev had a pie chart of their revenue splits where out of the top three console makers Sony was last (Nintendo and surprisingly Xbox were 1st and 2nd respectively.)
      But these were just a couple cases, and many indie dev dog piled on Sony's archaic policy.

It's a pretty sensible approach and the only reason I imagine he didn't do it for major flagship titles like Ghost Of Tsushima is because they had huge marketing campaigns that let you know EXACTLY what console the game was for. People didn't click on those videos to learn about some new underground gem, they wanted to know what he thought of the next big $90 dollar hit everyone was talking about.
      This is a tiny indie game made by two people, it's worth clarifying because not a lot of people would actually know going into his review. Maybe that MS money might have helped make it so polished too? 90% of indie games are on your beloved Switch day one. Let the rest of us have it for once.

The Series X|S have been getting flack from GAMERS more than critics or anyone else, when it really doesn't deserve it. I don't ask for people to say nice shit about Xbox, I just ask for bias to be removed from the equation. And if that is impossible, for it to be stated honestly. If SkillUp said it would have been great on the Switch, end of sentence, fine... but he went on to say it's "unfair that it's an Xbox Exclusive". Meanwhile, the Medium goes to PlayStation, and the only NEW X|S Exclusives (I'm going from memory, correct me if needed) that have any weight behind em, and launch _before_ FALL *2021,* are Psychonauts 2, MS Flight Sim, and like maybe The Ascent? The 2nd half of 2021 is DEFINITELY picking up in that regard for X|S Optimized Exclusives, but Psychonauts 2 might be TIMED, even though MS own Double Fine. The Medium seemed like it was only 6 months of X|S Exclusivity, and I was under the impression MS acquired Bloober Team, so... WTF? So just bc Xbox acquired Bethesda and a bunch of Devs, doesn't mean everyone on the planet isn't buying PS5s & Nintendo games RN. I'm not RICH, so if TH-camrs of widespread influence (and therefore sales, etc) didn't reduce XBOX's worth as a Brand to some bottom of the Console Hierarchy trash, it'd make me feel like my $500 Fridge PC isn't in danger of losing support from Pubs, Devs and Gamers... ending up on a "WHA HAPPUN?" video in 4 years. PS3 was in that position, and look where Sony is now. GameCube was a joke in terms of relative unit sales, look where Nintendo are now. I love games, & hate seeing SO much DRAMA in ALL areas of life; Games aren't POLITICS, they're fcukin "NERD" ESCAPISM, RIGHT?! Wasn't that the idea? Aren't we all enjoying the same hobby? Back when Dust an Elysian Tail came out in 2012 (where one guy did like 99% of the work, outside of music and voice acting), we were all blown away, since at that time, development tools weren't as advanced as they are now.

    People only say stuff like that when they're talking Xbox exclusives. I doubt you said this about Journey or Resogun or any of the other indie exclusives on playstation. I don't want exclusives to be a thing either, but their competition is doing it, so they have to also. This looks like my kind of game. I'd buy it if it was exclusive on another platform, and if I didn't have that other platform, I'd have one more reason to invest.

On the other hand you didn't say a word about FF7 Remake being a Playstation exclusive despite FF has been on Xbox for years and the original ff7 is even playable on the Series X? This doesn't make sense to me

    • @maz4145
      @maz4145 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Respectfully, you didn’t understand his point. He was saying this title doesn’t offer Xbox much benefit as an exclusive.
      Exclusives are bad for gamers in general, but we have to accept them since platforms use them to sell their consoles. His point here was that Xbox likely won’t sell any consoles because of this game, so why make it exclusive? Maybe there is some vague argument that the overall number of exclusives will drive console sales, but it doesn’t really hold much water.
      FF7 Remake IS an example of a title that will sell consoles. Again, it sucks that Sony has exclusivity. It’s bad for gamers in general. But you can understand why they have made it exclusive.

      @@maz4145 this is a weak take because Sony has funded plenty of lesser "non system sellers" and will continue to (kena) and yet no one "disclaims" anything on those games.
      He did this because he knows he has a very solid PS fanbase and they themselves know he's a bit of a Sony fanboy himself and therfore he was trying to heed their anger as they expect him being a Sony fan to have their back and see things from their perspective.
      Which whether he actually thinks it consciously or not he does... Hence why he felt the need to make such disclaimer.
      When he wouldn't have (and has not) in any Sony exclusive indie he's reviewed before.

    I get what you mean about wanting more depth to the combat, though I've actually played games where the simplicity of the combat was one of their best features. The Ys titles from the early 2000s are good examples. The player basically gets a single-button combo and a small handful of minimally-useful spells. But those games deliver some really wonderfully unrelenting action, and the main reason why they do is because they don't make you waste time with special attacks and elemental weaknesses and other extra mechanics. The bosses especially stand out because you think more about learning their attacks and behavior than you do about managing your loadout. It makes for a great experience when it's done competently.
