Making Handmade Ink From Natural Materials & Ingredients

- Today I'm exploring ink making by making some handmade ink from natural materials and ingredients with help from a book by Jason Logan: A Forager's Guide to Natural Inkmaking. Now although I found making handmade ink from scratch with all natural ingredients really interesting, I think I would definitely struggle to make interesting coloured inks based on foraging materials around where I live. But I suppose you can always substitute specific ingredients for others that are more accessible based on your location, and I think it would be fun to experiment with different combinations to see what inks work best. But I had a lot of fun making my own ink, and I would highly recommend it, especially if you're interested in a more natural approach to your art materials. But let me know what your thoughts were on this ink making process! And will you be picking up a copy of: A Forager's Guide to Natural Inkmaking by Jason Logan and trying to make your own?

Anyone else going to make some grape ink? 🍇🍇
You know french wine makers are buying up property over here because they say eventually it will be too hot to grow champagne grapes in France.
I'm assuming that'll be down the south, summer up north's been sooooo rainy!! 😭😭
I think that came out really well Ant, but if you want it darker, try simmering some of the water off and that should make it stronger. I love the colour it came out, it's an unusual purple and would create a great monotone painting or to dye some fabric with. I am surprised the book didn't say to use beetroot to get a good purple, because that has a super strong colour to it, especially the skin of a beetroot. My mother used to use tea, loose or in teabags to dye fabric a tan colour, also she used to boil onion skins to get orange and red from white or red onions. Nature is amazing isn't it! Fab video Ant, thank you. I hope your eye heals up really soon. God bless you and those you love. Have a great weekend!?
Ah good idea! And beetroot would have worked amazing for this actually! Much better pigment than grapes! Ah and glad you enjoyed it! 😊 Hope you have a great weekend too! 😊😊
And here I was thinking you might also try milking a squid 🤔😁
This was great - thanks for another fantastic video!!!
Haha! Oh that would be terrifying! 🤣🤣 Ah and no problem, glad you enjoyed it! ☺️☺️
The picture in my head for milking a squid😂😂😂
Really interesting. I've made watercolour paint before, that was easier than i thought it would be.
You could use turmeric powder for your yellow, it can be foraged from any wild super market....
Oh it was super easy to make! Haha and yep definitely! 😅😅
I think I'd have used some muslin or an old pillowcase to strain it through!
Oh yes I'm so excited!!!!!
😊😊
No, of course it's not wine, Linda! It's a beautiful handmade, foraged wild grape ink. 🍷
😆😆
I have ADHD which causes me to have a horrible time remembering things. The good thing about that though, is that I can rewatch videos and shows because I don't remember what happened in them. Like this video lol. I'm pretty sure I've seen it because when I found your channel, I binge watched all your videos. But I don't remember what happens or how it ends lol. 😂 I love your videos. You're so real and funny. I love it.
Haha oh at least you get to enjoy things multiple times 😅😅
I'm super baked right now and the only thing I can think of is that you poured the already-strained grape water back into the un-strained grape water.
I was YELLING "AN THON Y. SWEETIE NO"
Haha! I restrained it so it was fine 🙈🙈
Oooh this looks fun! I think I'll be buying this book as presents for all my arty pals 😁
😁😁
Less water and a longer simmer to reduce the liquid and make it more concentrated! Perhaps use turmeric powder to make ink?
Oh good idea!!
Aww you know me so well, i love purple!! 💜💜
😁😁
Wow those grapes were really expensive!!! I hope you ate the second punnet 😍
Tell me about it! And I did indeed! 😁😁
Yes try making jam someday ☺ Great video!
Ah thanks Kathleen! 😊😊
I watch a woman who uses flowers to paint. Amazing colors come from flowers. Beautiful color I like what you made.
Oh cool! Ah and thanks Alexis! 😊😊
Hey Ant, thanks for another brill video!! We've gone from History Ant to Science Ant in just one week! And who knew that wild grapes grew so easily in your local Tesco? 🤣🤣
Haha no problem at all! Just like to keep my content educational! 😆😆 And I know! They have soooo many wild foragable ingredients there 😅😅
@@AnthonyCrammen Hehe, get you, Professor Ant!! 😆😆 And hopefully next time you go to Tesco, you can forage for some wild chocolate oranges! Hope you're having a fab start to the weekend and getting some well-deserved sunshine 😎🌞
@kingmerry10 Haha for sure!! 😁😁 Oh not much sun, feels like it's been raining for weeks lol! Hope you have a great weekend too! 😊😊
All natural ink with bits of leftover grapes - love it 😂. Challenge, now you have to come up with a project to use it in. Did you keep it or chuck it already? Think I'd just go buy whatever instead too. Maybe it'd be easier to find certain things in spring. Cool idea for sure.
Haha! Nah it went the journey, didn't have space in the fridge for it and didn't fancy some off grape juice in the studio 🤣🤣
Hi Ant! Just wanted to let you know that Watergate salad should only be eaten in small amounts. I’m looking forward to seeing how you like about one of my family’s favorite desserts!!! ❤
Great going Anth.
😊😊
Cook it longer and it gets more concentrated. Cool concept though. Here in the USA we have wild grapes. I’ve wild raspberries here in the yard as well as wild strawberries. The tiny ones. Lol would take eons to pick enough of those. Hahaha can see the squirrels yelling at me for taking their berries. Lmbo. ❤the tutorial as always. 🥰
Haha! I used to know a really good place to pick wild blackberries but it's gone now 😭😭
@@AnthonyCrammen same. Had them everywhere when I lived on the California Oregon border. Tons of them. Here too cold to grow berries like that as winters here are brutal. Doubtful they could survive below zero temps.
❤👍
😊😊
I live near a premium wine making area so I’m sure to be able to get the grapes, but I think I’d rather just go to the shop and buy purple ink….. coz I’m super lazy 😅😅😅. Well done on cooking your own though. It turned out really well. I liked the colour you got very much.
Black grapes aren’t black and white ones aren’t white. I guess calling white ones yellow or green (or the colour they are) just didn’t cut it at some point in history.
Agree that grapes are delicious and cherries too! We have such a short Cherry season here in Australia that it’s usually over before I know it’s begun. 😢
Oh how cool! But yup I'm quite lazy too! 😆😆 And yeah cheery season is really short here too, think the majority are imported 😅😅
I have actually looked at that book on Amazon 😄 But I passed. It did look interesting tho.
It was really interesting and had some cool info inside, not sure I'll be a full time forager/ink maker but it was definitely fun 😅😅
Pleased your eye is getting better 👍🏻😃🤗🥰
Berries would be good 👍🏻😃
Ah thanks! Oh for sure! 😁😁
Well now I wonder if you can use foraged wild grape jelly and water/melt(?) it down to make ink or pigment.🤔
Oh quite possibly! 😅😅
At this stage I think you are stalking me as I borrowed that book 2 weeks ago from the library. Watching so I can learn from your mistakes
😆😆 One thing I learnt is to boil it down a bit longer and add less water for a better pigment 😅
At least no octopus was harmed and unlike some ancient dye recipes dung and other animal excretion were not required Though living on a farm you might have an endless supply.
Oh I have plenty of manure on the farm but definitely don't want that in my art supplies! 🤣🤣
I just knew you would go to Tesco for your grade. I think I’m. Tesopathic 😂😂
😆😆
🥰💗💗
😊😊
just imagine all the wasted grapes oof
I guess it would be a good way to make jam too with the leftovers if you wanted lol
Winter green oil is used in hand ointment,ie Snowfire😀it smells disgusting🤑
I'd never heard of it before, smells awful! 🤣🤣
