Great ideas with the boxes. For the heavier boxes, try using rope handles. Drill two holes in each end of the box, use 1/2" hemp rope with knots. Search images of old wooden ammo crates.

Another great video with great ideas. Thank you Emerald and Jade. Double up some landscape fabric to lay in the bottom of your planter boxes. If you’ve got little critters that love to eat the plants and veggies in the boxes, cover the bottom with chicken wire. All of my raised beds have chicken wire and landscape fabric on the bottoms. No gophers or moles can get in. Chicken wire covers also keep rabbits and deer from munching on the plants.

Might be worth checking to see if you could fit 3 or 4 flower pots in your boxes. It might be nice to have then in these during early spring and late fall when you might have to move them to protect against freezing. If the fit snuggly so they don’t slide around you might be able to team up with a local green house or garden center to sell them.

I like the planter with the feet. The box will last longer if it sits on dirt or grass - the feet will rot faster than the bottom. I think holes on the bottom will work better than the gaps along the edge. I can always cover the holes with some screen or a broken piece of pottery etc. to prevent soil from falling out but that would be hard to do with the long gap. Holes are traditional for a reason I guess.

May I suggest either finger joints or dovetails for the corner joinery as well as dadoing the bottoms in and I would dowel pin the wooden handles on (keeping it 100%wodden construction). YES, I know there will be small investment in tooling jigs and fixtures to get going but that will pay for itself VERY quickly. and you will have a product that will actually function well. for small flower boxes it isn't really necessary but for boxes that need to stand up to weight, yep, that is what I would do. well actually have done.

Awesome ideas all around. Couple of thoughts, in particular for the cook wood. Yes, definitely needs rope handles, but perhaps also making skids on the bottom like sleigh rails / sled, could be decorative and help. Also, to reduce weight, have the cook wood on the outside /line the outer walls of the box and have homemade charcoal in the middle. Would reduce the weight tremendously and provide 2 different cooking options. I would buy that in a heartbeat and I think others would as well. Keep doing what you're doing! Peace and all good!

Pine, outdoor planters, maybe some way to preserve ? posts in the ground you can tar, wrap in plastic and heat and shrink wrap (the best way)(posts for pole frame buildings) and old farmers in the west used to coat their posts with used motor oil, two coats length in the ground to 6 inch above grade, some of these posts have been in the ground for a hundred years, but depends on soil type/climate also. So something to think about.

Just my 2 cents (9/16 cent after current inflation). ALL of your ideas are great. Offering a box to go along with your other products will be a big hit. Maybe offer a smaller version that can be shipped economically. The planters need drainage. Drilling eight or ten 1" and stapling a 2" sq piece of stainless or alum. screen over each hole would allow a solid bottom which will be stronger.. Give some thought to longevity.. As the pine dries, it will loose it's grip on fasteners and glue is completely useless outdoors. If someone lifts a planter full of wet soil and plants and the bottom falls out of the box, their shoes may get dirty. Dovetail corners would be good but time consuming to produce. You can leave a couple sample boxes in the kiln for a few months to gat an idea of what might happen outdoors... LASTLY Get a branding iron with your company logo and burn it into every box... You do great work and take pride in ti.. It wouldn't hurt to FLAUNT IT!!!! ..

Very creative use for the boxes. Use the wood with knots for the bottom of a plant box by removing them to drain water. I would never imagined being so interested in the inner workings of saw mill and lumber business!

You should line the planter with landscape fabric. For the charcoal, I would line with burlap.

Too keep the bottom from rotting out.....the user can use old cooking oil. Paint the bottom bords with the oil. This will extend the life of the boxes.

Use Dawn dish soap on hands allow to dry, at the end of an sappy day it will GREATLY aid in removing the sap from your hands. Don't get hands wet if possible. Don't use Anti-Botanical soap, especially if you have a septic tank.
