He didn't acknowledge *his* mistake anywhere in that statement. If anything, he basically said that he and Eric share the blame, when that is totally false because ter Stegen is the one who had 2 wide options and thought it best to pass the ball to a marked Garcia.

I would honestly put the blame on both of them because eric was the one who started running towards ter stegen and then stopped right as ter stegen released the ball but the 2nd goal I believe ter stegen should have saved

Speaking with a cooled head last night, defeat marked three major mistakes. Ter Stegen by, making that awful pass, Garcia making a stupid red, and it is not "taking one for the tram" like everyone says. You don't take one for the team in the early moments you do it in the final moments. Flick waiting to concede second goal to start making changes. Lewa was completely useless by not having No 10 behind him and we played with two man in the midfield in the entire game. There was no way we were gonna survive that. He could have taken Lewa off and being in someone to connect the midfield and the attack. The best is that this happen now and woth the new format we are alive in all the competitions. Ter Stegen have the Rome, Liverpool and Bayern ghosts still hunting him. Yamal is the light in the tunnel he is littery pulling us at the age of 17. Protecting him until he reaches his full potential is the most important thing right now, even more important than winning something this year. He is the future of this club, and the only way to salvation of Barca

My interpretation was it was a pass he made to the other CDMs. We (Barca fans) are being too harsh on one of our best keepers ever. Does he make mistakes? Yes. But two years ago we were saying he was the best in the world when we were winning games 1-0 with Xavi and we won the league. Before MATS came back from injury we were conceding goals like crazy, then we went on a run to 2nd place.
Let's not turn on our players at the first sign of adversity. I believe in MATS and he will be saving us in big moments this season. @TalkFCB

Anyone who isn’t braindead would recognize ter stegen’s answer as a completely normal response
I respect that point but I have a few problems with this
1. Ter Stegen is the longest serving player at Barca in the squad at the moment, whether he realises it or not, a lapse in focus from him hits the wills of the players far more than if other players like if maybe Marc Casado or anyone else did it
2. His making that mistake then costing us the game is one thing but having a golden opportunity to be an example to the young players by showing accountability and character, even in the event that you cost the team, and instead avoid taking full responsibility in front of the coach, the team & the whole world, sends a bad message. Not just to us but also your young teammates
3. Ter Stegen should've known better. Not just the obvious, that Eric Garcia is not a natural pivot but that in the ucl, a risk like that, in the context of our form, is dangerous. Not only did this cost us the game, but this could have a knock on effect on the players mentally and it may show in the following game. All because he hasn't learned his lesson about the ucl being no place for unnecessary risks and silly errors
4. The problem is that it seems like these players still think that it's all fun and games here. This is a man's game. Any lapse in judgement will be severely punished.
The only way to come back from this mentally now is to absolutely dominate & win convincingly in the upcoming games. This will prevent our mental strength from declining further than it historically has from a situation like this.😮
Ter Stergen's performance yesterday make me remember 8-2 trashing against Bayern.... So sad
If u watch the game back u'll see MtS played that exact pass several times AFTER Garcia was sent off. And he has played that exact pass a lot during Flicks tenure so far. Its obviously an instruction by Flick. MtS plays it to the def mid(even if marked) as theyre coming towards him. Then the def mid plays it first time around the corner to the full backs/wide centre backs & suddenly we are out of the oppositions press. Its clearly a tactical plan. Flick wants MtS to play that ball. Hence why he kept playing it.
The problem yesterday was that at first Garcia showed for it and came towards him. However then he suddenly checked his run as the ball was being played. Thats why MtS is saying "we didnt understand each other" and tbh Jamie he is right. Garcia didnt realise MtS was gona play the pass AND MtS didnt realise Garcia was gonna check his run. They both messed up.
Im not sayin it wasnt MtS's fault as even if Garcia didnt check his run it was still probably too risky that time. However to ignore that it looks like a tactic by Flick and to ignore Garcia suddenly checks his run is slightly unfair on MtS..... IMO both MtS and Garcia messed up in equal measures last night

If u watch back ull see not long after the sending off MtS plays the exact same ball to Casado. He is tightly marked but continues running towards MtS and then plays it one touch out wide to the full back/wide centre back. Same scenario. Clearly worked on. Otherwise MtS wouldnt be riskin it again and again. Flick would tell him to stop.
For the next few Barca games watch MtS + def mid. I bet he plays that exact pass to a tightly marked def mid several more times. And he in turn plays it first time out wide.

I understand Ter Stegen's words. From my point of view, Eric Garcia asked for the ball, and at the very last moment, he felt under pressured by the opponent and was on the point to get back to the midfield position. And this last decision from Garcia wasn't expected by MATS. It's not as if the pass was bad, but it's all about this misunderstanding between him and Garcia who led to the goal.
MATS had a better view of the situation. He should have made a better decision regardless of the fact that Garcia asked for the ball

In an interview a couple of years ago, Ter Stegen openly admitted he didn't have a full understanding of football (tactics, positioning, etc), which led him to become a goalkeeper despite being excellent with the ball at his feet. He's too much of a perfectionist in my opinion.

Ter Stegen,s comments after the game implying it was Garcia at fault are just another of his holier than though attitude. He is far too comfortable at this club and needs to be brought down a peg or two. He is a massive weak link in this project and it needs to be addressed in January. Forget Pena he was just as incompetent as Ter Stegen last season. It's worth pointing out the goalkeeper coach kept his job at Barca after Xavis departure and it never went unnoticed by myself at the time
I personally felt that aside from the red card 10 minutes in which completely changed the entire game plan, Monaco’s energy was much more higher than ours. When the opposition player is quicker to the ball that is intended for you it says a lot. I believe that we should always look to match or have more energy than the team that we are going up against. That was my biggest takeaway, it just felt that Monaco wanted it more.
You're 100%right about MATS not taking responsibility for the mistake. I'm more upset about that than the mistake itself. I'd like to think flick will have a word with him about that. We'll bounce back. The Munich game is massive now.

Everyone loves Jamie, I do too but I also love all of you guys in the comments. It is always so nice reading your comments and getting to grasp many different opinions from people from all over the world with one thing in common which is unwavering love for our club. Ter Stegan did the same thing in our friendly with Monaco where Bernal lost the ball leading to the first goal.... I see our players usually pass the ball to teammates who are already under pressure. Never quite understood why. Anyway, we move forward as always Visca, hail Barca 🔵🔴
If you see every matches of barcelona, you would clearly see that the idea is very clear.. our goalkeeper is instructed to prioritize vertical passing(it's a good strategy to beat the 1st line of pressing) and that's what he did.. that's what he always does.. Eric was coming for the ball and then suddenly changed direction when Marc had already made up his mind to play the ball.. the idea was really simple as always : Marc -> Eric -> Cubarsi.
PS - when Marc played the ball, it wasn't possible to play to either Cubarsi or Inigo as they were already been marked.

You can see Garcia running clear towards TerStegen. he had plenty of space from the defender. Garcia then for some reason stalls and stars running another direction as soon as TerStegen makes the pass. With any other decent CDM, thats an easy 1st time ball outwide. Of course Ter Stegen is at fault but the fact that no one talks about Garcia's terrible movement is crazy. A player like Pedri, Rodri, Busi, would never fake the run like that. I get the frustration. But in this specific play, Garcia triggered the mistake. Then MATS just crumbled after this. Love you Jamie

@@kikirichy48 Why are you trying so hard to excuse Ter Stegen for his terrible performance? Are you forgetting that Garcia doesn't normally play at DM? Yes he was assigned to that position but it doesn't necessarily mean he's automatically supposed to be like Busquets in that position. The fact is that Ter Stegen shouldn't have played that pass to begin with. He had all that time to pass it to the fullbacks or to another outfield player, not one that is literally being closely man marked. Are you also forgetting how easily Ter Stegen let in both of the goals conceded?
I honestly agree with everything you say, BUT! There are many teams and examples where teams win after having a player sent off. First one that comes to mind is when we played Chelsea and John Terry got sent off early in the game, and guess who won that game - Chelsea
I feel like teams should be prepared or have a plan for when you go 1 man down, especially with VAR now, more and more red cards.
I think flick is the kind of manager that will now make sure there is a plan to still be productive and organised with 1 man down.
