And a season on TV ran through the fall (A season), reruns in the winter, new episodes in spring and reruns of those in summer. None of this 8-10 episodes pulp that gets churned out and leaves you waiting a year+ for the next episodes.
@Hillary Got screwed So Gay the intro is from one of the biggest hits in music of all time but I'll let you work it out n by one of the biggest legends of music
My older brother became a cop because he loved watching this show. Worked his way up to Detective and Captain before he was killed in the line of duty, working under cover. Every time I hear this music, I think of my childhood and I think of him. He loved being a cop and helping people. Some of his colleagues and peers didn't like him, because he didn't mess around when it came to disciplining his men under his command. He would fire or even arrest you fast, if you were being a total asshole to people or he found you were dirty, racist, abusive with your power, or just a bad cop or being a bully cop. But many loved him for being that way. People said they felt the safest in their lives when my brother was alive and on the force. He used to tell people, "Live your lives with peace and no fear. Leave the monsters to me and my men." He also used to say to his men and other officers.. "If you wear the badge, and swore to protect and serve, you should pledge your life. If you betray the trust of the people who put their safety in your hands, and dishonor the badge, you should pay with your life"
Your brother was the epitome of what it means to be a real police officer. He was a man’s man and a cops cop. He expected the people around him and working underneath him to do the job of a police officer… To serve and protect. And that’s what he did. And from what you said, he did it with absolute honor And will always be remembered that way. God love your family and Godspeed to your brother. He was one of those that brought integrity and nothing but honor to the profession. Good on him.!!!!
I feel you… Would always watch this show with my state trooper Father. And we had a good family friend a city Metro officer killed in the line of duty Friday, 13 September 1985 that I remember to this day. Reading about the loss of your brother just broke my heart.
When my husband and I were first married we watched this every week, 24 years later when he was terminally ill we watched re runs. We had the theme music at his funeral. Always be special to me ❤.
The vibe of the 80s was so magical. The entire decade gave you the feeling you had the last day of school before summer break. So much hope for the future but yet we all felt like friends regardless of social background.
@Gary Cooper That 's very true without this there wouldn't be Breaking Bad and the Wire it broke new ground at the time , still is one of my favourites. Cheers !
I had an aunt who would just watch the opening credit sequence because she loved the music so much, then would change the channel when it was over. She never watched a single episode.
I brought up with this series! What a wonderful decade of 80's, everything was real, virtual reality hasn't been invented yet and people were happy with the life that they they used to live.
While I agree that it is easy to get carried away with nostalgia - I think you are right. The big difference between then and now is digital. I'm 52 so I can clearly remember a time before online . In 1985 we all lived our entire lives IRL - there was no digital life. Everything else was pretty much the same, you had school, work, cars and homes weren't that different, politics was the same, you went to the supermarket to buy food, put in the fridge and then cooked dinner. nearly everything was the same (apart from sylistically ie. the cars looked slightly different), apart from the Internet.
iSerpzy my brother used to have to play this for piano class. He would practice and always mess up and my mother would be yelling from upstairs “ You ain’t going outside till you get it done”
I was a cop in The Met Police in London, a retired vet, The Royal Navy, when this hit the screen in The UK. The first series was "Finding" itself. Long hair, not quite like a cop should present theirself. FROM THEN ON, as US Police said, JUST LIKE THEM....I AGREE....SO PROFESSIONAL!

One of the best shows ever. I was a tad young to appreciate it when it was on (born 1972), but i caught reruns on Bravo in abt 2004-2005 after coming home from night shifts as a cop. It really captures the everyday struggles and the unsung good work done all the time by good men and women. Kudos to the creators, writers, ans cast. They richly deserve every award they ever got, and more.
The police station they use in the opening theme scene is a couple blocks from my work. The University of Illinois at Chicago police department use it as their police station. Pretty cool I was 9 years old when this show came out and all these years later I still drive by the station.
I suddenly felt an urge to look up this theme music, as a kid growing up in Greece in the seventies and eighties on special occasions I would get to stay up and watch this show. My god where have these qualities gone? The first thing that struck me after some 40 plus odd years of seeing this show is the candour in the bleakness. Truly historical.
30 years I had just graduated college, no job yet. For 3 months I watched Hill Street then joined the Army. Always gave me some kind of comfort. To this day.
As a youngster, the bit at 0.56 where the Mother and two kids are walking down the road in the rain and sleet in that very depressing urban environment, always got me. Certainly different to most of the other stuff I used to watch back then that was all set in sunny California and where everyone lived in massive houses, had great cars and not even the teenagers had a single spot on their faces.
I wonder the fate of those children, the mother must be pushing 80 by now. Kids are surprisingly resilient, but that craptastic landscape was forbidding, just terrible. Everything is ruined, wet, cold and rusted. EDIT and she was probably about to cross the road. Looks like the older, industrial section of town.
@@sainte3443 Yes. It was so different to other programmes from the States that I saw as a kid in England. I suppose Cagney and Lacey had a grittyness as well though.
@@floydpitt7590 Most of the actual towns I've been through here in the US have parts like these. The railroads run, or did run through here. They tend to be crime ridden for obvious reasons, but they can have their charms, for all their grit. Those are often places that have experienced gentrification, which I don't find charming, but I can enjoy aspects of it. I have to revisit old Cagney and Lacey eps on yt at some point. x
Dude that just misted me up!😢 I know exactly what you're talking about. I even like how in the beginning, when the two squad cars are pursuing someone, how the second one burns out and almost loses it
I don't know why it's got me thinking about Punky Brewster right now, even tho it's music is more reminiscent to Greatest American Hero! This show was too adult for my age at the time yet I still liked it. Thanks so much for uploading it
When Hill Street Blues was aired on Saturday nights, no one I knew went out. We simply loved it. Nothing before or since was, or is as good. We looked forward to every episode, and felt a sense of loss when each episode finished. Just brilliant.
Retired as Police Lieutenant after 30 years in 2006. I watched this show faithfully every week. Best time was watching it with other Cops at the Ohio Peace Officer's Training Academy. Unique time in policing that can't be repeated. I've made arrangements for this version to be played at my funeral.
How close was it to real policing? You see many cop shows today and you just think that it can't be realistic in the slightest and that real cops must laugh at them
In the days of bs pseudo reality shows, long running plots, and paranoia. It would be refreshing to see well written, reality based show. With character actors not models.
I saw the episode where Larue ended up at an AA meeting. I went to a meeting the next night in Palm Springs and Kiel Martin was there. No wonder the episode was so accurate.

Hill Street Blues, Hill Street Blues, Hill Street Blues, I got those “Hill Street Blues” 😂😂😂😂😂. Family Guy reference
Shit i miss them good old days, the 1980s was just way better 😊👍
30 years I had just graduated college, no job yet. For 3 months I watched Hill Street then joined the Army. Always gave me some kind of comfort. To this day.
RIP Mr. Bochco. You were well ahead of your time.
More than the show, I remember how much my dad loved it. And he was a trooper at the time.
I even like how in the beginning, when the two squad cars are pursuing someone, how the second one burns out and almost loses it
Michael Conrad: "Let's be careful out there" 👮
Clinton Nebraska.....excelente actor !! Total Respect !!
I don't know why it's got me thinking about Punky Brewster right now, even tho it's music is more reminiscent to Greatest American Hero! This show was too adult for my age at the time yet I still liked it. Thanks so much for uploading it
Carter Guitar brought me here.
Hahaha yaass
Lmmmmao he sang it too well with Louis
I just had to c aswell
When Hill Street Blues was aired on Saturday nights, no one I knew went out. We simply loved it. Nothing before or since was, or is as good. We looked forward to every episode, and felt a sense of loss when each episode finished. Just brilliant.
When TV shows were focused on telling gripping plot lines and not forcing their political opinions down their viewers.
Joe Spano is now in NCIS as FBI agent Fornell. He went from one smash hit show into another! That fabulous theme still gets me.
Gibbs and Fornell are an excellent duo when on screen together.
Dennis Franz went from Hill street to NYPD blue too
This song... my siblings... nothing but love and beautiful memories
this takes me back
Such a classic intro music never get bored of it THE Hill st blues wow high 5
Retired as Police Lieutenant after 30 years in 2006. I watched this show faithfully every week. Best time was watching it with other Cops at the Ohio Peace Officer's Training Academy. Unique time in policing that can't be repeated. I've made arrangements for this version to be played at my funeral.
How close was it to real policing? You see many cop shows today and you just think that it can't be realistic in the slightest and that real cops must laugh at them
The beautiful 80's. Nostalgia overload when I see this.
In the days of bs pseudo reality shows, long running plots, and paranoia. It would be refreshing to see well written, reality based show. With character actors not models.
When I was a kid, this was the last show my mom would let me watch before getting ready for bed 😂😂😂😂
Unlocked so many memories of staying up late with my dad. Ace programme
I saw the episode where Larue ended up at an AA meeting. I went to a meeting the next night in Palm Springs and Kiel Martin was there. No wonder the episode was so accurate.
AMAZING!
He was like, "Uh, I'm doin' research. Yeah yeah, that's it. Research. Christ, my head."
Loved watching Hill Street Blues as a kid. Would love to spend a weekend binge watching the first two seasons.
Mike Post created some awesome themes.
Mike Post の曲、その後のLA LAWもだったような記憶。良い時代
だった。
His theme from Murder One was brilliant too!
NYPD Blue! 🚇
Yes! Hill Street, Rockford Files, Magnum, PI, Doogie Hauser, Quantum Leap etc. Some of the greatest themes ever!
The Great Mizuti.... Mike Post & Pete Carpenter, both
