Well, actually, that's the best part about illusion magic. He could be doing words and gestures to do the big stuff, but hiding them under a minor illusion that makes it look like he isn't.
pretty sure he is using more magic here bc the old loki he met in the last season showed him where his true strengths lay. he is an illusionist and trickster, and as such he will be more powerful with that (and his other magic) than the blades he was always using previously.
Classic Loki's final stunt also helped in that. When Loki and Sylvie were checking it out, Sylvie wonders how the heck the old man is doing that, and Loki in realization answers "I think we are stronger than we realize". In the immediate time it helps them to use Sylvie's power on Alioth, but on the long run I think it helps Loki to push his own boundries further.
This is how he should have been through the entirety of his time in the MCU! Regardless of who his allies were at the moment, we should have always been guessing and just a little intimidated. Instead of the God of Magic, or the Trickster God, we got a con artist and a turncoat most of the time. Not a bad character, but he could have been SO MUCH MORE.

Whatever you smoked, stop, it can't be good for you.

They focused on his powers of illusion, but not the rest of his powers. The reduced him to a shell of what he should have been, because it was funny, and essentially removed him from the role of being any serious serious concern after his debut. Season 1 of Loki he ridiculously only used his powers to throw a random appliance/store product at a Loki-controlled normal human (who somehow was overpowering normal Loki physically). @@OTristian

He's not supposed to go overboard with It otherwise he creates branches. But he does use lots of different magic in the show, not just illusions. Heck, at the end of the show he does something that is far beyond anything else we've seen in the MCU.

But what I really mean by being competent with magic is that for one Loki is a few hundred years old even before the show, and he is a sorcerer not a warrior so you would think that Loki would be capable of more then just illusions after all that time - I'm not asking for Doctor Strange vs Thanos levels just more diversity. Some Ideas of the stuff he could/should be able to do. - Telekinesis - Mind Reading (proper) - Astral Projection - Hard light Illusions - Mind control (basic levels 1 person or so, not enchantress fem-Loki levels) - Some form of energy projection spells like the lasso, bolts etc - Transmogrification abilitys turning into animals etc
