  • Keeper Talk at the Maned Wolf exhibit with Isaac at the San Diego Zoo.
    The Maned Wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) is the largest canid of South America. Its markings resemble those of foxes, but it is not a fox, nor is it a wolf, as it is not closely related to other canids. It is the only species in the genus Chrysocyon (meaning "golden dog").

      @Nqzz ?
      they’re not being forced, lmao. Some zoos do mistreat animals, but most just utilize the simple reward training system. Many animals understand that when they do something, they get a reward. That’s literally how dogs are trained, it applies to maned wolves, too.

      I mean unless it has a condition, almost any canine can be trained "like dogs" (albeit I would imagine foxes probably have to be trained more like cats due to convergent evolution regarding cognition). The question is how consistently the training will hold up under adverse conditions and what additional challenges are present.
      Even among dogs, some breeds can learn more commands than others (on average for all of these), some will rely on their training more consistently while others are more independent, and some tend to have particular attributes that make training more difficult.

    So that's what they're supposed to look like. I was grilling one day (back when we lived out in the country), and I look up to see the giant, yet skinny, scraggly dog thing staring at me. It was about 100 ft away or so. We just stared at each other forever, I checked the grill, went inside to hide a bit and came out. It was gone. It was on the side of the property we let grow tall, so the fact that I could see an entire animal over the top of tall grass kinda freaked me out. Then I couldn't find out what it was! I guess this is how crazy monster stories start😁 Once I finally found out what it was, I realized the poor thing was way out of it's environment. It belongs it a warm, humid environment, and it was in the PNW. Humid, yes, but hot it ain't. Well, maybe with global warming... Shame on whoever brought it there though!

      They’re highly endangered due to severe habitat loss. People who cares them, they need to keep them in captivity to save the species from the people (corporations) who continuously destroying their habitat. We’re not really allowed to act against those corporations, so I would sacrifice many things just to keep a couple happy, even if it’s attached with the bad word “captivity”. Feels much better than let them die in awful conditions without food and water.

      Veronika, Questioning Things Yes, if you search for “Men save thirsty maned wolf” you see just how bad it is. Apparently there’s a lot of metal pollution in the natural bodies of water that they’d normally drink from, so it’s essential to secure the species, even if that means there are a few generations of captive maned wolves. Captivity is the closest we can get to a ‘seed vault’ for animals, and it’s the best way we can preserve species when the environmental issues can’t be fixed fast enough to avoid direct intervention.
