    Pure negligence. You can see through the video he goes faster and faster as he gets over confident. You can hear how he talks about the curve coming up to it like it is no big deal. Accidents happen, catching a rock but coming in that hot into this tight of a bend is just asking for trouble. Turned way too far out, hit the rocks and sounds like he panic throttled. They are lucky to be alive.

      I had a 1983 CJ-5 6 cyl brown metallic that I bought new. I only kept it 3 years and traded it in on a new ‘85 Ranger. I drove the Jeep on the Mississippi levee a few times and. It was scary just going up the narrow levee road. I would love to have another one or a CJ-7 with a little more leg room.

      Nice, had a stick 79 4x4 CJ5, 67 4x4 1/2 ton Jeep pickup, and an old 44 1/4 ton Willys (ordered 2 of them & dad and I assembled them). You'll be fine, down or uphill, use 4H off-road slight up hill -#15 , 4L and granny gear on steep down/up grade. NEVER get in a hurry, never ride your clutch, and learn to walk your Jeep (don't gun the gas) down hill. Never go 4 wheelin when you have to be somewhere by a certain time, patience will keep you alive. I currently have a 2020 Rubicon Wrangler 4x4, 4 door hardtop auto and a 1994 F150 4x4 stick pickup (bought new). Mil/Leo ret.

      Definitely lack of experience, speed and getting too close to the wall. Front driver side tire went up the wall and suspension gave no articulation. But even so, a much slower approach would've prevented the roll over. Very lucky we didn't keep rolling. The only injury to report was broken index and crushed middle left fingers (with middle dislocated also).

    Glad to see everyone is OK. Must have been terrifying! I'm a Colorado native and have been driving 4wd machines for over 40 years and driven most every pass but two, Red Cone and Black Bear. Too dangerous!! I hope that classic crusher didn't get too damaged.

    • @charlesb4267
      @charlesb4267 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I was on both ends of that trail years back with a full size extended cab pickup, over the pass from highway 550 to just passed the summit ( then turned around ) also into the box canyon up to the power house and just being at that point to the top of the falls was well worth it if you haven't, and back then a family was still living in that building. Being that your a Colorado back country native, I was curious if you have driven Taylor pass as you may get a good laugh out of the fact I did that trail with my pickup and it has running boards to boot, again far from the hot setup to be near trails like that !. This video ( have not looked for the other parts yet ), I sensed something bad about to happen even if the title had not said as its so easy to bounce off a rock sitting loose on the trail at anything other then a very slow controlled speed, there is very little room for error when it comes to trails like this.

    • @TickleFingers
      @TickleFingers 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Red Cone definitely has it's moments... My Lexus GX470 on 33's and 3" lift made short work of it. Going up isn't too bad, it's the trail down from the peak that really gets you. Luckily it's a short run to Webster pass and it's all gravy from there. There's also plenty of room there to park for 10min and let your sphincter relax enough to let go of the seat! I took my DSLR with me and got some AMAZING shots at the peak. I have no interest in Black Bear. That kind of stuff just ain't for me.

    • @paulstandaert5709
      @paulstandaert5709 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Black Bear isn't terrible. It is honestly hyped up more than it should be. My first time down it was with my dirt bike and I was expecting something terrible. I walked my bike down the "steps" just to be extra careful and then I was like, "That's it?"
      I took my Jeep XJ down it in 2021. It has 33's and 3.5" of lift. Nothing special and no need for lockers. Make sure you have good brakes / brake lines, have a general idea of proper wheel placement, don't drive over the edge, or up on the rock face, and you're good to go.

    • @charlesb4267
      @charlesb4267 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@paulstandaert5709 From watching videos of various vehicles negotiate that trail, definitely the XJ wheel base along with its not overly wide wheel track was a good rig on not only that trail but a lot of the trails in Colorado. Full size longer wheel base pickups are a different beast, a worse break over angle, worse departure angle and a wider track, not to mention weight being a performance killer and a gravity killer !. Another item you're Jeep has going for it or in my mind anyway is the solid front axle as some pickups or for that matter independent front suspension SUV's can have opposite tires lifting off the ground long before your XJ would in the uneven type terrain and as a result can roll, at the very least has poor traction or no drive to the ground with no lockers. Hopefully your able to keep your XJ running good for a long time to come, those are excellent units and I had wished I had been driving one when I was doing some of the trails in Colorado.

    Especially with manual transmission vehicles and tcase in low, you can miss a line and the vehicle wants to keep going a bit more than an auto trans vehicle before you can stop it. One second and that left front tire is up too high causing the roll over. Makes sense to go slower in this situation due to the switchback risk.

    Go Pro cameras use a fish eye lens that makes your speed twice as fast as you are actually going. Used mine for off roading, skiing, etc, and pretty much doubles your speed. Of course, you never admit that, people think you're a badass!

    Going up the mountain you can move a bit quicker than usual but not down. Always crawl down because the smallest mistakes have exponentially deviating consequences.

    He needed a open rear end with a lock up with individual rear brakes. Do hairpin switchbacks braking the inside wheel. I think Broncos has that option.

    No offense to the driver but he was definitely out of his league on this trail with his vehicle. His speed on this trail says it all.
