      Owen actually thought that Anakin was dead(canon)because thats what Obi Wan told him. He always blamed Obi Wan for his death, which is why Kenobi just watched from the distance to protect Luke.
      Obi Wan had to have realized Vader was still alive sometime, otherwise he would have called him Anakin(he did call him that during his whole time on Mustafar, but went to calling him Vader in this one). I mean, depending, I know the twist wasn't planned in advance(just like it wasn't planned that Luke and Leia were siblings when they made out in "Empire").

He knew Anakins new name was Vader, and heard about him being the face of the empire in Mos Eisley. It sent him into a bit of a mad spiral cos he clearly felt guilt and failure at not properly killing him. _Absolute win for Solo now, because he literally went less distance in the Kessel run making it be faster._
      What's great is that, thanks to _Solo_ BOTH interpretations of that line are true now. Han really did plot a course through the Kessel Run that covered less distance. But his course was just _over_ 13 parsecs, so he's still BS-ing when he claims he did it in "less than 12 parsecs."

    I watched Star Wars for the first time this year and A New Hope was really incredible. Just with its story telling and the fact that its the text book example of a Hero’e Journey. The characters are all excellent and as a movie that’s like 40 years old it really held up from me as a new viewer. I was recognizing pop culture lines that I’d never known the source for and I new a number of the scenes just from their legacy alone.

      No, the new version was Lucas's way of attempting to "fix" something that didn't need fixing. I'm guessing they didn't have enough crew or couldn't hire enough extras when they shot it originally. In fact, it's still technically a "dead end". It's essentially a stormtrooper locker room. Why would that many stormtroopers be all in one place though? Yeah, that's why it doesn't make sense. And they didn't keep continuity, so you don't see that many again.

    The Expanded Universe already provided a brilliant resolution to why a short distance on the Kessel Run is something to brag about: in between the two planets, there is a massive black hole cluster, and it's tricky to pilot near one of those. So, making the trip in a shorter distance means flying close to the black holes, thus confirming both your skill and your ship's quality.

      actually flying closer to a blackhole would be not only insanely dangerous, buuuuut, it would make the trip faster, the blackholes would create super powerful inescapable zones of destruction, and he basically flew in between the blackholes, that is insane, and more to the point he was sling shotting around them as if they were planets to sling shot around, not only insane, but likely he was running for his life from something.
      and yes in theory, black holes are compressions of space, but we really dont know for sure, do we, but the theory goes two ways, its compressing space, and its also possibly the bridge effect where black holes as they become dense enough to form may or may not reach out of our universe to another layer of space, perhaps even reaching towards whereever gravity is coming from, its possible black holes are energy bridges that pull energy and bring it through a tunnel into a even larger blackhole or another universe or layer of space where it is consumed by some nightmarish thing we do not have a word for, or is possibly left floating outside of a white hole which mysterious to its viewers, if thier can be anything living in such a universe with randomly appearing energy and unknown physical laws, the white hole just appears with energy flaring out of it then presumably dissapears again or returns to its normal light which might be what a blackhole would look like if it wasnt sucking all matter through, maybe its like a glowing vortex of plasma that moves so fast it disrupts realizty itself and creates time dilation and spacial compression.
      but really its all crazy theories
      so yes... the kessel run being faster and in less space and time is related to black holes.
      so you can say george lucas is lieing if that makes you feel better, but chances are he is really smart and knows a bit of science, especially after all the life he has lived, all the things he has done, and the companies he has run etc

    To me the best version of the 'explaining hyperspace travel to 'fix' the parsecs thing' came from the X-Wing novels where they go into a lot of detail about that sort of thing. They explain that hyperspace travel is always a straight line point A to B. You want to chart those lines close to star systems and such so you've got a place to go in an emergency but anything that makes a gravity well is gonna fuck with your navigation (Han mentions this in ANH with his 'fly right through a star or bounce too close to a supernova' line). Larger, faster ships have the mass and/or momentum to resist these tugs of gravity so they can fly shorter courses.
    In the old EU novels the 'Kessel Run' was a smuggler's route to avoid patrols that went around a cluster of black holes called The Maw. They were well charted but highly dangerous and most smugglers had ships just one side of the scrap yard so they had to be a little careful. The Falcon had its super juiced hyperdrive, a daredevil pilot, and (as we learn in Solo) a truly unique navigation computer so they shaved distance off the run, could complete it faster, and made more money and bragging rights.
    All that being said I also like CinemaWins's take on it that Han was testing the waters to run a game on Ben and Luke. Han's a scoundrel. He's always gonna be looking for the angle.

      One of the main things that keeps Luke on the good side is his admiration for his father. When he learns his father was a Jedi Knight, this admiration is amplified. Obi-wan knows this and doesn't want to destroy that. Luke is broken upon learning his father is actually evil, and even still, he counts on the admiration of his Jedi father as the catalyst that brings Anakin back.
      When Anakin says "you already have, Luke" at the end, there is heavy substance to it. Luke could have just as easily and understandably let go of the feelings he had for his hero dad.
      I also choose to believe that Vader blocking Luke's strike on the Emperor wasn't to protect the Emperor, it was to protect Luke and keep him good in a moment of Anakin returning (hence the title of ep6) and reaching out.

Luke blew it by meeting Vader before he was fully trained, and then getting emotionally attached to him. Of course Yoda was concerned that Luke wouldn't complete the training and be turned to the Dark Side or otherwise manipulated and defeated.

    Also concerning the "Don't shoot the space pod, because of no life forms". The empire needed to confirm that the plans were safe. Just assuming that someone had stuffed the plans into an empty escape pod could lead to disaster is the plans were hidden somewhere else.

      Evsbear1 Basically some people have a problem with the fact the empire didn't shoot down the pod just because there was no life forms. However the empire needed to verify that the rebels don't have the death star plans. Only way to do that is to search the entire ship and all of the escape pods which you obviously wouldn't be able to if you destroy one of them. Therefore the empire would only take the risk of destroying the escape pods if there was a life sign and therefore suspected the rebels were trying to smuggle the plans.

I only saw it the first weekend because my wife just had our first child and she and her mother told me to get the hell out of the house and not come back until the evening. I remembered the movie was at the new CinemaScope theater and waited for three hours in a ticket line and then two hours in the entrance line and ended up in the center seat in the second row from the front, which is usually a bad seat due to the loudness of the sound system. Not with this movie! It was the best seat in the house and I will never forget the giant Imperial warship feeding itself onto the screen seemingly from behind me. Watching one of many amazing documentaries on Star Wars creation, I learnt that in making of a new hope Lukas has already started working the script of the next two films. Leading me to believe that he had most definitely planned out the plot twist where darth Vader reveals his true identity. So obi-wans line “he was killed by darth Vader” was not only accurate but planned.

    • @sandal_thong8631
      @sandal_thong8631 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can't take Lucas's word on anything, because it's him just being self-aggrandizing after the fact. He got the first draft of the script of Empire from Leigh Brackett in first quarter 1978, who then died of cancer. He then came up with the idea to make Darth Vader Luke's father instead of his father's killer. A couple months later, David Prowse in an interview suggests that they are father and son, so the story won't be resolved in the next episode as father can't kill son and son can't kill father. I suspect Lucas read that article in a San Francisco paper and got pissed at Prowse, who supposedly was never told until he saw the movie.
      He also supposedly had Indiana Jones planned out for three films, but Spielberg was quite ready to say that wasn't the case after he found he didn't have a second story ready. That was one reason why they brought back all the unused stunts from _Raiders_ (e.g. jumping out an airplane and mine-cart chase) to use in _Temple of Doom._

    Vader was always meant to be Luke's father, but Luke and Leia weren't twins until Return of the Jedi. It amazes me how many people get that backwards. What happened was, the first movie was made exactly as Lucas planned it except Obi Wan wasn't originally supposed to die, Lucas actually had the idea while shooting the light saber fight. Empire Strikes back also happened as Lucas had planned it except they had to introduce a new mentor to replace the one they killed, hence Yoda. However, just after Empire, Lucas' wife left him for another man and he got really bitter and cynical for a while. He decided that instead of making the several movies he'd planned, he would just combine the next two planned sequels into one and end it as a trilogy. Originally, the third movie was going to have Boba Fett as it's main villain and introduce a force sensitive girl. The plot would be about getting Han back and would've ended with the Jabba fight that happens in Return of the Jedi. The fourth movie would've revealed the new girl was Luke's twin sister. However, Lucas decided to just make one movie, to spend less time and money on it, and to put an emphasis on trying to sell toys, and that's why we got the version of Return of the Jedi we got. Don't get me wrong, I actually think the part where Luke is facing Vader as the Emperor watches is the best part of the series, but I believe the various people who worked with Lucas who said the things I just reported.

      "Empire Strikes back also happened as Lucas had planned it except they had to introduce a new mentor to replace the one they killed, hence Yoda."
      I'm not sure how accurate that is, especially since Lucas wasn't directing and in everything I've read, Empire was over budget and Lucas wasn't happy about that. That doesn't sound like a director that's got everything planned out.

    • @colinmurphy5508
      @colinmurphy5508 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lucas didn't direct Empire, but he did write the story, executive produce, direct several special effect sequences, and in general keep a close eye on things. The director, Irvin Kershner, was a friend and former college professor of his whom he trusted to follow his vision.
      As for the budget issues, there were two reasons he was so angry about the movie going over budget. First, because it was the follow up to the highest grossing film of all time at that point, people assumed the budget was unlimited and charged the production extra for everything. In some cases, the production was charged double the normal rate for rentals and purchases. For this reason, Return of the Jedi was shot under the title "Blue Harvest." Second, he had produced it outside of the studio system (hence he didn't have a huge fortune to fall back on) and the bank inflicted harsh penalties over when the production went over budget in addition to threatening to pull the loan. He then was forced to approach the distributor, Fox, for additional funds and they screwed him over pretty bad because they claimed they weren't sure if the movie would make money. The head of Fox was actually so mad about the screw job he resigned. Here's a copy-paste of the wikipedia page:
      "The initial production budget of $18 million was 50 percent more than that of the original. After the various increases in budget, The Empire Strikes Back became one of the most expensive films of its day and after the bank threatened to pull his loan, Lucas was forced to approach 20th Century Fox. Lucas made a deal with the studio to secure the loan in exchange for paying the studio more money, but without the loss of his sequel and merchandising rights. After the film's box office success, unhappiness at the studio over the deal's generosity to Lucas caused studio president Alan Ladd, Jr. to quit."

    About Han's line regarding his ship and the Kessel Run:
    The Kessel Run is a well known smuggler's route between Kessel and the Pyke Syndicate. Inbetween the start and finish of that route there are several checkpoints, nebulas and other things. Ships in Star Wars can (mostly) not travel in a straight line towards their destination since hyperspace doesn't let ships travel *through* other things. (see that Clone Wars episode where Anakin and Plo Koon chase Grievous' ship through a nebula without lightspeed travel and arrive at destination before him (with him in hyperspace) since he has to go around the nebula.)
    So, the Falcon's superior navigation systems made it possible for Solo to use a faster, more straight route. (Other ships had to do the run in e.g. 15 parsecs since they had to dodge more stuff)

      Sabu Uncia I think he did the sequels primarily for the money. Alec Guinness has said that the one thing he truly likes about Star Wars is how much he got paid for it. He actually enjoyed the original film when he first saw it, but over the years he grew to hate being associated with Obi-Wan Kenobi, as that role completely overshadowed the rest of his career.

    My first time watching this movie will always stick out in my mind: I was six years old, all of my cousins gathered at my aunt and uncle's lake house in Indiana. We were all exhausted from being out on the water and I was sitting on my cousin Lindsay's lap due to the lack of chairs and we were all sitting around the 30 inch tv in the living room. I was in complete awe and was freaking out over the attack on the Death Star. During the space battle my amazonian cousin bounced me on her knee to make it feel more immersive and even later picked me up and played Star Wars with me when we got dragged behind the boat on tubes the next day. Best weekend for pre-pubescent me ever! In fact, that was the last summer before I hit puberty.
    I loved A New Hope. It remains one of my childhood favorites alongside The Mask of Zorro, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi.
