- It has been two years since Russian troops invaded Ukraine, sparking a deadly war that many say is far from over.
Western officials have estimated that hundreds of thousands of people have died in the conflict, which has evolved into what experts call the world's first full-scale drone war, with hundreds of drones firing explosives every day.
But in the past 12 months, the frontline has barely moved and some say a stalemate has been reached. The Guardian's Andrew Roth explains why the frontlines seem to be frozen and why the war drags on.

The UAF is still continuing the summer counter offensive - soon they'll have advanced to the Polish border. Meanwhile the RAF are continuing their speedy retreat from Moscow with their precious shovels.
Initially it was called the Spring counter offensive, it was started in spring 4th of June 2023. Not sure when was the official end date for it.

Ukraine did not "have to go to western partners to look for its shells", they were literally handed thousands of western caliber artillery pieces like the M777 with NATO caliber shells like the 155 and not their traditional soviet artillery. Russia isnt dependant on North Korea, they're literally out manufactoring NATO in making artillery shells.

Ukraine did not launch a counter offensive and retook the North of Kyiv, Russia started withdrawing after they started getting smacked with sanctions and international backlash plus their troops werent capable of taking Kyiv after their logisitic lines were getting attacked by drones while they were advancing. Kharkiv was won because the russians were expecting the counter offensive to take place in Kherson due to ukrainian false info war and weeks of attacks on the Crimean bridge and naval ports, there was barely much fighting compared to Feb24th-Late March because most of the russian forces were diverted there and those that was stationed there literally surrendered or retreated in mass, which is where ukrainians gained a lot of POWs and captured hardware like russian T-90 tanks . Bakhmut and Avdiivka aint incremental, they were literal fortress cities that cost both sides 1000s of lives , Avdivvika was a fortress city used to launch attacks into Donetsk separatist regions and was the most heavily fortified Ukrainian city on the Eastern front, it wasnt your basic Ukrainian city/town like Robotyne which only had a few warehouses and residental complex. To say no one is winning is delusional af, Ukraine has been on the defense with over $200B worth of aid from the US, UK and Germany , failed its largest anticipated counter offensive over 2 months with just a handful of towns to its name meanwhile Russia is literally taking Ukraine's fortress cities in weeks.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine have been constantly shelling the city of Donetsk since 2014. The attacks were carried out mainly from Avdiivka. Many civilians were killed, including children. The liberation of Avdiivka made it possible to move the front line away from Donetsk and thereby significantly protect it from terrorist attacks.
The vast majority of civilians have been killed by Russia, the country that started this mess
