I was watching a Karmalita fox video and someone said that one of the best things you can do is SEPERATE your feelings from hunger. She said and I quote “sad is not hungry. Bored is not hungry.” and that’s when it clicked for me. I never had that big of an appetite, I just used food as a dopamine supply when I didn’t have anything else to do 🤯 now I gotta find something else to boost my dopamine lol
Yeoooo the way this is TRUE, I recently started eating once a day for weight loss purposes, and it really showed me JUSTT how much I was eating JUST cuz I was bored….. WOAH
@Mynameiselectra girl I just started too. 😢. My older sister has been secretly doing OMAD for the last year and half and BABY, she is slim and pretty. We are both 5'11'' and I realized how ethereal and classy she looks. She let me on the secret and advised me to do OMAD and here I am.
I find that the more upset I am about where I am, the harder it is to make progress towards where I want to be. I had to overcome the shame and guilt that I was feeling in order to get back on track.
I had read a book on intermittent fasting, and that helped me understand why I stress eat and how that affects me mentally and then physically. I started to pay attention when I got hungry and I would ask myself am I really hungry or do I just need a drink of water. This mindset has helped changed the way I consume and think about food.
Omg this!!! Sometimes we think we are hungry when really we are dehydrated. I just learned this about myself and I eat less often now that I always try to hydrate first thennnn see if I’m still hungry after.
@@CanelacurlsI rarely find this to be the case. I’ve tried it. When I feel hunger, it’s hunger. When I feel thirst, it’s thirst. Going to drink water when I’m actually hungry 9 times out of 10, doesn’t change anything.
The idea that your body puts on weight when it feels unsafe is so beautiful. Because God crafted our body to protect us. I have started to recognize a lot of the things you covered on my own, but that part was honestly such a wholesome way to see my body that it made me realize how important it is to pay attention to my cues and not punish myself for being hungry. I think another really great tip would be to prioritize finding and eating foods with nutrients that your body needs that are also tasty to you. Because you can eat sugary food and then because your body got no real sustenance from it, you’ll feel that trigger to eat again (even if it’s a just mental trigger) and it makes you feel guilty for wanting to eat again. But your body is literally saying “I cannot sustain you off this. I need better food to function properly.”

As someone who has lost 40lbs and still wants to lose 50 or more I almost left the video when you said 15 lbs. So glad I didn't. This applies to anyone who struggles with their relationship with food. Really enjoyed the video!
SAME. I’m currently down 40 pounds and still have more to go, and 15 just seemed like such an insignificant amount to ME, but then I realized it’s going to be different for everyone, but the advice holds true. I’m also glad I stayed!!
i admire the open mind you had continuing the video. i got judged SO much by those around me when i said i wanted to lose weight because i wasn’t happy & wanted to be healthier in myself. Id just have people continuously tell me i “don’t need to lose weight” but it wasn’t just that, i knew where my life would’ve headed if i kept eating the way i did. im so glad i didn’t listen to them & until i started, i didn’t even realise how bad my relationship with food was! this video would’ve been so good a year ago 😂 but also i wish my friends kept an open mind about it
Trust me, losing weight when you are already at a healthy weight is REALLY HARD. It seems insignificant, but if you are obese, the weight will start to drop really quickly as you change your habits minimally bc your body doesn't actually want to be overweight. But going from normal healthy weight to (healthy) skinny is the hardest b** of all lol

As a petite woman myself this video is so sooo accurate. The forced protein shakes + workout advice of social media led me nowhere but gaining an additional 10 pounds and looking so bloated. It’s like now I have to reverse everything
I definitely agree about not demonizing food. Funny story. My intern prepared a presentation about high cholesterol. I asked her to get feedback from the dieticians. They advised that she not say any food was bad but to categorize it into frequencies as always, sometimes or rare. I think that’s super helpful. Vegetables fell into always category but pizza falls into sometimes.

@@meraribenlevi6245 Pizza is not bad food. Most of the food types that make people fat today were the only source of lasting satiation for our ancestors. Bread and cooked meat being the first ones. They sometimes had one meal every two days or even more rarely (not by choice, of course). We just have too much constant access to a too big of a variety of foods today.
I have definitely experienced gaining and holding onto more weight during times of stress and depression. Your body knows best and will protect you if it thinks it is in danger. I really think being happy and minimizing stress is one the best weight management tool out there!
I read it. The only thing I took from it was eat more fish, drop pork, drink warm salt lemon water first thing in the morning, cut refined sugar and white carbs, try royal jell and garden cress seeds. I just saved you $14 on a 40 page easy read. Oh and fruit is better than veggies and veggies have pesticides so go with organic or grow your own.

this girl is talking truth. i decided for one year that i would just focus on clean up my diet. i wasn’t worried about working out of losing weight, i just focused on eating clean. i lost 35 pounds and went back to the weight i was before i had my son. the following year i started to incorporate fitness (i hate working out so i do things that don’t make me sweat like yoga lol). for reference i’m 5’9 and 145.

I had a similar realization. I spend the last 4-5 months trying to "bulk". I was consuming a ton of dairy via protein smoothies, big breakfast, yogurt, and lots of chicken. I was bloated and constipated all the time. I felt heavy and didn't gain nearly as much muscle as I had expected. I've switched to lighter meals and more veggie proteins, and it's been a game changer.
@@ShellMM I have at least one meal with protein (salmon/tuna or chicken) and have added more beans, wild rice and lentils. I’ve added a few fun salads too. I still eat some yogurt via smoothies but not nearly as much. I’ve maintained my weight and measurements the last 3/4 weeks. I have had egg/sausage bits with grape fruit daily. I hope that helps.
My problem wasn’t emotional eating, it was boredom eating, which I still struggle with even though I reached my goal weight 💀 acknowledging it really helps but it’s not always easy to stop the craving once it’s started

SAME! I'm 5'2 and I used to be an active healthy 130lbs. I got a depo shot and gained 30pds in a month, that was 10 years ago. I've been stuck at 170pds, I might loose a couple pds here and there, but they come back on if I goof off one day.

Thanks for reminding me I’m not alone 🩷 I was also reminded recently that having another “puberty” in our mid-twenties is so real, and our bodies just… change. I’m in my mid-40s and there’s so much GOLD and knowledge being dropped in this video that it made me sit up and take notes - and I’ve been struggling with my weight for over 30 years. Particularly where you touched on trauma because boy, my body has been through some sht. Hi Bria, this is the first video I have watched of you and I want to say Thank you for putting across your thoughts. The way you told us how our relationship with ourselves affects how we eat is so true. I never realised this even though I was aware of it that I gained the most weight when I was going through the most stressful periods of my life. I have always had a healthy relationship with food, but what I lack is working out and coping with my emotions and keeping it inside me. But my relationship with food took a turn for bad once I gained 10kgs in the last 6 months. I started viewing food as good and bad and I thought I would have to restrict myself. I have just started my wellness journey again and I have promised myself that I want to do this for life and not till I achieve some aesthetic goal. Learning how to eat healthy, working out is a life skill that everyone needs but most people talk about it as if we inherently have it. I learned a lot from your video and I am looking forward to watching more of your stuff.
The issue is you thinking that you have to keep the emotions inside you and that’s what is also contributing to your weight gain. You need to find outlets for your emotions. Journal your emotions and write down why you’re having these feelings - this is helping you to hold space for yourself and show compassion to yourself. The goal is to process your emotions which is making sure you’re releasing them.
I lost 25lbs last year and have k3pt it off pretty easily. For me, it was all psychological and started with therapy. Appreciate your take Bria and I couldn't agree ore. Thanks for sharing.
I'm only 8 minutes in but so far you've covered the same realizations that I learned in two years of binge eating disorder treatment including 3 months of intensive outpatient treatment. I was in a toxic relationship for four years on and off. During that time, I had gained around 60 pounds without even realizing it. (Around 6 months of weight gain, I know, that’s a LOT of weight to gain in 6 months, and I have stretch marks from that time because of it) and I had avoided even looking at myself for a very long time. One day I got on a scale, and saw 200 pounds. 60 pounds more than the last time I weighed myself. It felt like I completely blacked out for 6 months because I was just always snacking and not processing the many emotions that come with a toxic relationship. Once I saw how much I gained it was like an overwhelming feeling of “wow, I actually let myself go and I didn’t even realize it.” So I got back in the gym and stopped snacking as much, but it hardly helped. My bf then broke up with me in June 2022, and after that my weight quite literally fell off. The funny thing is, I didn’t even correlate the two events with each other. It’s obvious now. I wasn’t even trying to lose weight and the minute that he ended things with me, I found a nice routine for myself and saw results w/o even trying. Down to 170. 6 months later, we got back together. (Please don’t judge, if you’ve ever been in a toxic on and off relationship then you know what it’s like) and so I didn’t gain any weight, but I didn’t lose anything either. Fast forward to 2024. February, my bf moved away and we broke things off mutually. I have already lost 10 pounds, but it’s not going as easy as it did the first time. My goal weight is around 140 since that was my starting weight a couple years ago, but I’m still 20 pounds off. I’m currently in the stubborn fat stage and have been going to the gym regularly to build muscle (and I really have gained a lot of muscle!!) but I have been really struggling with eating. I’ll be good one day and then the next I spiral. Then I do good for two days and fall off for three. Currently I’m in a pretty big slump and it’s the third day in a row I haven’t gone to the gym (the first time I skipped more than one day since February, now April) and I feel so bad. I’m going to start intermittent fasting and try to listen to my body more, but I’m just stuck right now and I don’t know what to do. My mental health these last few days has been really struggling and I’m trying to dig myself out of my hole by doing things like cleaning my depression room (but that made it worse because now it doesn’t feel like my space anymore :( but I’m going to do better this week and try to change my mindset a bit more. This podcast is helping a ton and I can FINALLY relate to someone I see online. I’ve never seen you before but I’m subscribing so that I will. Your advice has helped me switch my mind to be a healthier version of itself, and I’m excited to implement this new perspective in my everyday life. If you’ve read this far, ily 🫶 and thank you ❤

Maybe you’ve hit a plateau because you need to heal emotionally before you can make progress again. Probably the best thing you can do right now is focus on maintaining and being as nice and caring to yourself as possible

Yes girl I loved this video! So happy for you, and you should be so proud of yourself for having these realizations. Like you said, not enough, people are talking about bodies and weight loss from this perspective, and it really needs to be talked about more. Here are some of my thoughts based on what you talked about: Emotion is energy in motion, and like you said, we have to keep it moving. When it gets stuck or stagnant, it can actually become something physical. Disease, excess fat, etc. are often related to/tied to an emotional charge that was never properly released from the body. So really allowing ourselves to feel and process ALL emotion is so important. Something else that really resonated with me on my own journey is to stop using the phrase "lose weight" because when you lose something you're usually trying to get it back. For example, if you lose your keys, you are going to look to find your keys and get them back again. But when it comes to weight or excess fat, we're not trying to find and regain the weight. So rather than saying "lose" weight, saying "release" or "let go of" weight that no longer serves you. Again, energy is everything. One thing that I find really helpful is actually taking a moment before I eat to send gratitude to everything and everyone that made my food possible. Gratitude for the plants or animals, the rain, the sunshine, the people who made and prepared my food. by sending that positive energy into the food you eat you also receive that positive energy when you consume it. This is where the quote "a happy donut is healthier than a sad salad" comes from lol. You could be eating the "healthiest" thing in the world but if you're consuming it from a space of shame or judgment, or fear, that is the energy that you're bringing into your system. Whereas you might be eating some thing that some people would consider less healthy, but if you are eating it with joy and gratitude, and love, that is the energy you were bringing into your system. i LOVE that you talked about the body positivity movement because i misunderstood it as "my body is like this and i shouldn't change it" when i, in fact, CAN CHANGE IT! spent years stress-eating and rotting in bed all day, ended up gaining too much weight… now i understand it's about accepting the way my body is naturally while doing my best to take care of it 🌱⭐️ i no longer wish for a body i can't have, i wish for my body to be the best version of itself 🌈 loved ur vid so much !!!

It’s actually crazy how we want what we can’t have. There was a study where parents said raisins were bad food, kids wanted them more. And my little cousin LOVED sliced tomatoes, but I spent my whole childhood hating all vegetables just because they were always compared with processed foods
I also hated vegetables my entire childhood (probably for the same reasons as you stated) and even into my late teenage years. It reminds me of how it’s so much easier to teach a child how to swim than it is to teach an adult because as we get older we have more complex feelings about the things we inherently don’t like and we’ve had a lot of time to develop views about those things. It was EXTREMELY difficult for me to start even trying to incorporate vegetables and other healthy foods because I was so used to processed foods tasting the way they did. It became my normal. As crazy as it is I couldn’t imagine eating shredded lettuce as a teenager and after I bit the bullet and tried it one time I realized it wasn’t as bad as I expected it to be. It still took time for me to adjust to adding healthy foods to my diet and I’m still on that journey! This whole story about me and vegetables is basically just me saying that it’s quite interesting how we internalize the stimuli around us. Those things can be very difficult to reroute when they’re constant reminders everywhere you go. And even when you remove yourself from that stimuli, you still have to do the work to relearn everything on your own.

Bria looks so young, and my first thought was that she couldn't know much about this with being so young. Then she mentioned that she had gained 15 pounds, and I'm thinking, "That's nothing compared to what I need to lose." Well, let me jusy say how thankful I am that I continued to listen. I think I kept listening because I could sense her authenticity. She is real. She has so much insight and wisdom to be so young. Yes!🎉 i was waiting to hear you say IF. Most days of the week, i fast 18 hours. My digestion always seems to need a kickstart, so i take flaxseeds, chia, cascara sagrada- not altogether - and i can maintain a flat belly and have no bloating. IF is the best thing I've done for my body. Great video❤
When I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease five years ago, it suddenly became so apparent how everything is always centered around food. It was like a gigantic slap in the face. So on one hand, my social life suffers and it's very difficult for me to go out or celebrate with friends. But on the other hand, I realized as a teenager that we have a very strange relationship with food and that it doesn't need to be that way. When I DO go out, I'm able to appreciate everything else so much more!

I realize starving myself wasn’t helping but healing my mind and having a better relationship with food it’s what I need to do. You said so many right things in this video, I wish more people would watch this as I agree 10000%. Journaling and releasing the trauma is the first step to healing and therefore shed pounds of pain/weight. Your body stores all those emotions and as you said protects you. Honestly, thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for making this video. I’ve been big my entire life and like you I’ve been in a yo yo of lose some gain some more for what seems like my entire life. I also love sugar always need something sweet after I eat anything. I’m also a Scorpio and yes I hold so many grudges from those who have hurt me and added trauma into my life. I’ve never felt so seen and heard before and this really helped open my eyes. It’s so hard to not listen to what this influencer is saying then this one and on and on. I know what I have to do it just takes me actually getting up and doing it without a time constraint and being so cruel to myself while simultaneously being accountable.

I’ve never had issues with my weight until recently when I gained like 15-20 pounds and my family started to make comments about it. I felt like my being skinny was the only thing that made me pretty so I tried to focus on losing weight by going to the gym and by sometimes not eating at all but it’s honestly been so stressful. I moved away from home for 6 months so I’m really trying to relearn how to eat when I’m hungry and not punish myself with food. I agree with literally everything you mentioned. Okay this is so amazing! I’ve always gained and lost very easily after a traumatic event. Now 22 years later, I am 3 years in off being around 20 kilos heavier then my health weight and not being able to loose it like before.. over the years I’ve had more traumatic events and it is now that I am realizing, that I haven’t forgiven the persons hurting me the most.. it’s holding me back in a lot of ways and finally I am able to see they actually helped me see the world in its true colors. It’s amazing you link sickness to trauma, I’ve been believing this since knowing of my auto immuun disease on my skin. When I started healing myself, the problems has gotten way less! Now my healing can start with food. Thank you ❤

I am 51 yrs old, and i have had eating disorders all my life ,that only stopped whilst i was pregnant with our son 22 yrs ago...only last year, did i make a vow to make my self STRONG , 1st on the inside and then on the outside.while i was never super overweight, i just did not feel like my self ,i wanted to glow, i wanted to look good and wear pretty clothes, and while some ppl told me "im fine" ,i just didnt feel "fine".i am 175 lbs now and the healthiest i have ever been in my life. Went from dangerously underweight as a dancer in my TEENS to a healthy weight that I was still unhappy with in my late 20s. I’m so glad this came up on my feed. I’m a guy and I’ve personally experienced a lot of this. There’s so many nuggets of real in here that needs to be said, especially in today’s chaotic social media landscape. For the last couple years I’ve been just like… lost in the mess of all this. I wanted to loose fat and I felt bad for it because on the surface people looking at it wouldn’t expect that’s what I wanted but… it is what it is wanted! And next to that it felt like the only way to get there was through numerous ways that did not make my body feel good. This video was so incredibly helpful processing a lot of thoughts and feelings around food and my body. What I love the most about intermittent fasting is that it naturally propels me to drink a lot more green tea, water, and coconut water. It feels good to use the fasting window to hydrate the mind, body, and soul.
This was such a great conversation and so many of the realizations you have came to have been working for me as well this time around, I have been shifting my thoughts to gain health and not the food I have to “give up” to lose this excess weight. Also when it comes to movement: do what makes you feel good and what you enjoy! Not what’s currently trending online. When I stopped trying to become a muscle mommy and then a Pilates princess, and instead implemented movement that I actually enjoyed and that suited my lifestyle, I finally got a routine going. That’s not to say that weightlifting and Pilates can’t be fun, I’m sure it can be. But at the current moment, it does not work for me and I don’t want to keep beating myself up for not being able to get into a routine with it. Now I mainly go for long walks, do dancing / walking workouts and hula hoop and it’s actually working for me because I’m able to exercise consistently. Cause I’m having fun. And you can always build onto those small things after a while.
This video was definitely needed cause I constantly snack and the questions you asked made me realize the fact that I’m not happy with where I am in life and eating sweets make me feel good but shortly after I feel like crap so I know I have to tackle the bigger issue while choosing a better substitute!
I gained 20 lbs since I moved to Florida because my ex used to sl*t shame me because of the attention I would get from other ppl. I never dress exposed or anything, I’m a mom and much too old for that. But that carried on to my job, where the men just were not safe and I just wanted to hide. Before this I was a gym girlie. Loved my body after 3 kids. And I gained weight to feel safe in my body. So men would leave me alone.
i notice this in reverse. ive always been overweight most of my life, but ive recently lost weight. i get not only more attention from men, but like creepy more forward attention and it freaks me out. i dont really wear make up or revealing clothing. i love how i look and feel, but this definitely worries me because i want to lose a little more weight and summer is coming up. conflicting feeling for me. i dont want to gain the weight back just to feel safer at the risk of my health😢

my binging started when i was in about 3rd grade. that was when i began feeling insecure, like i didn't fit in. my negative self image has stayed with me for practically my whole life and it has caused me to binge eat and hate myself for years. this video has really opened up my eyes and i thank you so much. it's never been my body's fault, it was my own mind's.

I'm crying as I'm listening to your video. I struggle with low to 0 appetite and ARFID so I can eat limited foods and it makes me gain weight (not a doctor, cannot explain it). Min. 24:00 when you started talking abount the body positivity movement, you touched my worst fear - that I'm gonna "show myself" that I don't "deserve love" if I lose weight, because I'm gonna like myself more and people are gonna treat me differently. For the first time ever I'm finding someone with similar thoughts, that it's "bad" to want to lose weight because of the movement. Thank you so much for this! You freeded me of my biggest obstacle! So much trauma and death (and stress induced weight gain and chronic aches) way too much to type. I just have to say THIS CHANNEL is so much more substantial than much of the encouragement I find on TH-cam. Definitely agree with this 💗 well said. I struggled with binge eating for years but after realizing that I ate most of my calories at night, I just tried to eat a lot every morning/afternoon so I would be too full later. Also going for a walk everyday after work to clear my mind and I wrote out my “why” for weight loss, which was because I hated how my stomach hurt so badly after every binge and I just wanted to feel good in my skin
genuinely this was one of the best videos i could have ever watched regarding weight loss. i’m 5’2 and have always been the smallest one in the family. my family was considered obese by a lot of doctors and i was the only one that stood out. i never had a problem with their weight, nor my own until they started to comment on it. my mother, who was the heaviest, made it an effort to keep me small. and i never thought much of it. and it got pretty bad after she herself went on a diet and got a gastric sleeve, loosing close to 300 pounds. every month our family was on new diets, adding more protein and larger portions to keep us “full”. we went on fasts that lasted days at point, just because of our relationship with food changed as a unit. i developed a really bad relationship with food during high school, and ended up with an ed that i still struggle with today. i was 17 and 110-115 lbs at my lowest. yet everytime i looked in the mirror i could only focus on my stomach and what to do about it. i’m now 20 and i reached my highest weight of 180. and it took everything in my being to not restrict and harm myself for it. but like you said, my body is trying to protect me. for years i denied its right to feel satisfied and constantly threw confusion of when it would be fed. i had so many people comment on my smallness for so long that i felt that i let people down for getting to this weight when i should really have been thinking for myself. i want to lose weight, i really do. and following so many different things on the internet from people with my dream body ultimately lead me to where i am now. but this past week, ive been really focusing on what my body needs to get to a goal weight. to a goal health. i’m learning about it and incorporating new habits that are in the same vein as my old ones. and im already feeling significant differences in my body that i haven’t felt in a while. but it feels different, it feels healthier. and im glad that information like this is being shared on a very larger scale so it reaches people who are too struggling in this world of misinformation/harmful information.

Great information! Once you realize that the majority of your weight loss journey requires that you work on what’s inside your head, you’ll have better success. It is about mindset. I also struggle with listening to my body. I know a food doesn’t agree with my body but end up eating it b/c it tastes good. Then I regret it…rinse and repeat.😩

I was watching a Karmalita fox video and someone said that one of the best things you can do is SEPERATE your feelings from hunger. She said and I quote “sad is not hungry. Bored is not hungry.” and that’s when it clicked for me. I never had that big of an appetite, I just used food as a dopamine supply when I didn’t have anything else to do 🤯 now I gotta find something else to boost my dopamine lol

Interesting, I gained happy weight because of my current circumstances and positive love. I lose weight if sad. Guess everyone is not the same.
I had read a book on intermittent fasting, and that helped me understand why I stress eat and how that affects me mentally and then physically. I started to pay attention when I got hungry and I would ask myself am I really hungry or do I just need a drink of water. This mindset has helped changed the way I consume and think about food.

Omg this!!! Sometimes we think we are hungry when really we are dehydrated. I just learned this about myself and I eat less often now that I always try to hydrate first thennnn see if I’m still hungry after.

@@CanelacurlsI rarely find this to be the case. I’ve tried it. When I feel hunger, it’s hunger. When I feel thirst, it’s thirst. Going to drink water when I’m actually hungry 9 times out of 10, doesn’t change anything.
The idea that your body puts on weight when it feels unsafe is so beautiful. Because God crafted our body to protect us. I have started to recognize a lot of the things you covered on my own, but that part was honestly such a wholesome way to see my body that it made me realize how important it is to pay attention to my cues and not punish myself for being hungry.
I think another really great tip would be to prioritize finding and eating foods with nutrients that your body needs that are also tasty to you. Because you can eat sugary food and then because your body got no real sustenance from it, you’ll feel that trigger to eat again (even if it’s a just mental trigger) and it makes you feel guilty for wanting to eat again. But your body is literally saying “I cannot sustain you off this. I need better food to function properly.”

i got judged SO much by those around me when i said i wanted to lose weight because i wasn’t happy & wanted to be healthier in myself. Id just have people continuously tell me i “don’t need to lose weight” but it wasn’t just that, i knew where my life would’ve headed if i kept eating the way i did. im so glad i didn’t listen to them & until i started, i didn’t even realise how bad my relationship with food was! this video would’ve been so good a year ago 😂 but also i wish my friends kept an open mind about it
Trust me, losing weight when you are already at a healthy weight is REALLY HARD. It seems insignificant, but if you are obese, the weight will start to drop really quickly as you change your habits minimally bc your body doesn't actually want to be overweight. But going from normal healthy weight to (healthy) skinny is the hardest b** of all lol

- Food doesn't control you, you control food.
- Stop labeling food "good" or "bad".
Step 2: Do a deep-dive reflection
Understand why you gained weight
- What are the real reasons behind your weight?
- What are you using food for besides sustenance?
- Why is food used to acknowledge our emotions, accomplishments, etc?
Step 3: Support your weight loss
Find alternative coping mechanisms
- Don't restrict yourself when it comes to food
Example: if you tend to go to sugar when stressed, replace the processed kind with natural sugar (like in fruit instead of ice cream)
Regulate your emotions more effectively
- Allow yourself to release emotions instead of letting them fester inside
Example: cry or journal instead of bottling up emotions
Stop listening to internet people and instead start listening to yourself
- A lot of youtubers say you should lose x amount of weight in y amount of days or weeks - DON'T rush yourself
- What works for someone else might not work for you. Our journeys are individual and we need to figure out what works for us
- LISTEN TO YOUR BODY (and its signals) and adjust based on how you react to food
Step 4: Prioritize feeling good in your body
Other things:
- You don't want to feel deprived
- You want to be able to practice sustainable weight loss habits for the rest of your life
- Prioritize body acceptance
- It's okay to want to change
- CHANGING YOUR LIFESTYLE CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE
- Work with your body as a team, don't fight it

I definitely agree about not demonizing food. Funny story. My intern prepared a presentation about high cholesterol. I asked her to get feedback from the dieticians. They advised that she not say any food was bad but to categorize it into frequencies as always, sometimes or rare. I think that’s super helpful. Vegetables fell into always category but pizza falls into sometimes.

@@meraribenlevi6245 Pizza is not bad food. Most of the food types that make people fat today were the only source of lasting satiation for our ancestors. Bread and cooked meat being the first ones. They sometimes had one meal every two days or even more rarely (not by choice, of course). We just have too much constant access to a too big of a variety of foods today.

I have definitely experienced gaining and holding onto more weight during times of stress and depression. Your body knows best and will protect you if it thinks it is in danger. I really think being happy and minimizing stress is one the best weight management tool out there!

The only thing I took from it was eat more fish, drop pork, drink warm salt lemon water first thing in the morning, cut refined sugar and white carbs, try royal jell and garden cress seeds. I just saved you $14 on a 40 page easy read. Oh and fruit is better than veggies and veggies have pesticides so go with organic or grow your own.

this girl is talking truth. i decided for one year that i would just focus on clean up my diet. i wasn’t worried about working out of losing weight, i just focused on eating clean. i lost 35 pounds and went back to the weight i was before i had my son. the following year i started to incorporate fitness (i hate working out so i do things that don’t make me sweat like yoga lol). for reference i’m 5’9 and 145.

I had a similar realization. I spend the last 4-5 months trying to "bulk". I was consuming a ton of dairy via protein smoothies, big breakfast, yogurt, and lots of chicken. I was bloated and constipated all the time. I felt heavy and didn't gain nearly as much muscle as I had expected. I've switched to lighter meals and more veggie proteins, and it's been a game changer.
I am having the same issues, what did your lighter meals consist of aside from veggies?
@@ShellMM I have at least one meal with protein (salmon/tuna or chicken) and have added more beans, wild rice and lentils. I’ve added a few fun salads too. I still eat some yogurt via smoothies but not nearly as much. I’ve maintained my weight and measurements the last 3/4 weeks. I have had egg/sausage bits with grape fruit daily. I hope that helps.

SAME! I'm 5'2 and I used to be an active healthy 130lbs. I got a depo shot and gained 30pds in a month, that was 10 years ago. I've been stuck at 170pds, I might loose a couple pds here and there, but they come back on if I goof off one day.

Hi Bria, this is the first video I have watched of you and I want to say Thank you for putting across your thoughts. The way you told us how our relationship with ourselves affects how we eat is so true. I never realised this even though I was aware of it that I gained the most weight when I was going through the most stressful periods of my life. I have always had a healthy relationship with food, but what I lack is working out and coping with my emotions and keeping it inside me. But my relationship with food took a turn for bad once I gained 10kgs in the last 6 months. I started viewing food as good and bad and I thought I would have to restrict myself. I have just started my wellness journey again and I have promised myself that I want to do this for life and not till I achieve some aesthetic goal. Learning how to eat healthy, working out is a life skill that everyone needs but most people talk about it as if we inherently have it. I learned a lot from your video and I am looking forward to watching more of your stuff.
The issue is you thinking that you have to keep the emotions inside you and that’s what is also contributing to your weight gain. You need to find outlets for your emotions. Journal your emotions and write down why you’re having these feelings - this is helping you to hold space for yourself and show compassion to yourself. The goal is to process your emotions which is making sure you’re releasing them.
I lost 25lbs last year and have k3pt it off pretty easily. For me, it was all psychological and started with therapy. Appreciate your take Bria and I couldn't agree ore. Thanks for sharing.

I was in a toxic relationship for four years on and off. During that time, I had gained around 60 pounds without even realizing it. (Around 6 months of weight gain, I know, that’s a LOT of weight to gain in 6 months, and I have stretch marks from that time because of it) and I had avoided even looking at myself for a very long time. One day I got on a scale, and saw 200 pounds. 60 pounds more than the last time I weighed myself. It felt like I completely blacked out for 6 months because I was just always snacking and not processing the many emotions that come with a toxic relationship. Once I saw how much I gained it was like an overwhelming feeling of “wow, I actually let myself go and I didn’t even realize it.” So I got back in the gym and stopped snacking as much, but it hardly helped. My bf then broke up with me in June 2022, and after that my weight quite literally fell off. The funny thing is, I didn’t even correlate the two events with each other. It’s obvious now. I wasn’t even trying to lose weight and the minute that he ended things with me, I found a nice routine for myself and saw results w/o even trying. Down to 170.
6 months later, we got back together. (Please don’t judge, if you’ve ever been in a toxic on and off relationship then you know what it’s like) and so I didn’t gain any weight, but I didn’t lose anything either. Fast forward to 2024. February, my bf moved away and we broke things off mutually. I have already lost 10 pounds, but it’s not going as easy as it did the first time. My goal weight is around 140 since that was my starting weight a couple years ago, but I’m still 20 pounds off. I’m currently in the stubborn fat stage and have been going to the gym regularly to build muscle (and I really have gained a lot of muscle!!) but I have been really struggling with eating. I’ll be good one day and then the next I spiral. Then I do good for two days and fall off for three. Currently I’m in a pretty big slump and it’s the third day in a row I haven’t gone to the gym (the first time I skipped more than one day since February, now April) and I feel so bad. I’m going to start intermittent fasting and try to listen to my body more, but I’m just stuck right now and I don’t know what to do. My mental health these last few days has been really struggling and I’m trying to dig myself out of my hole by doing things like cleaning my depression room (but that made it worse because now it doesn’t feel like my space anymore :( but I’m going to do better this week and try to change my mindset a bit more. This podcast is helping a ton and I can FINALLY relate to someone I see online. I’ve never seen you before but I’m subscribing so that I will. Your advice has helped me switch my mind to be a healthier version of itself, and I’m excited to implement this new perspective in my everyday life. If you’ve read this far, ily 🫶 and thank you ❤

Maybe you’ve hit a plateau because you need to heal emotionally before you can make progress again. Probably the best thing you can do right now is focus on maintaining and being as nice and caring to yourself as possible

Yes girl I loved this video! So happy for you, and you should be so proud of yourself for having these realizations. Like you said, not enough, people are talking about bodies and weight loss from this perspective, and it really needs to be talked about more.
Here are some of my thoughts based on what you talked about:
Emotion is energy in motion, and like you said, we have to keep it moving. When it gets stuck or stagnant, it can actually become something physical. Disease, excess fat, etc. are often related to/tied to an emotional charge that was never properly released from the body. So really allowing ourselves to feel and process ALL emotion is so important.
Something else that really resonated with me on my own journey is to stop using the phrase "lose weight" because when you lose something you're usually trying to get it back. For example, if you lose your keys, you are going to look to find your keys and get them back again. But when it comes to weight or excess fat, we're not trying to find and regain the weight. So rather than saying "lose" weight, saying "release" or "let go of" weight that no longer serves you.
Again, energy is everything. One thing that I find really helpful is actually taking a moment before I eat to send gratitude to everything and everyone that made my food possible. Gratitude for the plants or animals, the rain, the sunshine, the people who made and prepared my food. by sending that positive energy into the food you eat you also receive that positive energy when you consume it. This is where the quote "a happy donut is healthier than a sad salad" comes from lol. You could be eating the "healthiest" thing in the world but if you're consuming it from a space of shame or judgment, or fear, that is the energy that you're bringing into your system. Whereas you might be eating some thing that some people would consider less healthy, but if you are eating it with joy and gratitude, and love, that is the energy you were bringing into your system.

i LOVE that you talked about the body positivity movement because i misunderstood it as "my body is like this and i shouldn't change it" when i, in fact, CAN CHANGE IT! spent years stress-eating and rotting in bed all day, ended up gaining too much weight… now i understand it's about accepting the way my body is naturally while doing my best to take care of it 🌱⭐️ i no longer wish for a body i can't have, i wish for my body to be the best version of itself 🌈 loved ur vid so much !!!

It’s actually crazy how we want what we can’t have. There was a study where parents said raisins were bad food, kids wanted them more. And my little cousin LOVED sliced tomatoes, but I spent my whole childhood hating all vegetables just because they were always compared with processed foods
I also hated vegetables my entire childhood (probably for the same reasons as you stated) and even into my late teenage years. It reminds me of how it’s so much easier to teach a child how to swim than it is to teach an adult because as we get older we have more complex feelings about the things we inherently don’t like and we’ve had a lot of time to develop views about those things. It was EXTREMELY difficult for me to start even trying to incorporate vegetables and other healthy foods because I was so used to processed foods tasting the way they did. It became my normal. As crazy as it is I couldn’t imagine eating shredded lettuce as a teenager and after I bit the bullet and tried it one time I realized it wasn’t as bad as I expected it to be. It still took time for me to adjust to adding healthy foods to my diet and I’m still on that journey!
This whole story about me and vegetables is basically just me saying that it’s quite interesting how we internalize the stimuli around us. Those things can be very difficult to reroute when they’re constant reminders everywhere you go. And even when you remove yourself from that stimuli, you still have to do the work to relearn everything on your own.

Bria looks so young, and my first thought was that she couldn't know much about this with being so young. Then she mentioned that she had gained 15 pounds, and I'm thinking, "That's nothing compared to what I need to lose." Well, let me jusy say how thankful I am that I continued to listen. I think I kept listening because I could sense her authenticity. She is real. She has so much insight and wisdom to be so young. Yes!🎉 i was waiting to hear you say IF. Most days of the week, i fast 18 hours. My digestion always seems to need a kickstart, so i take flaxseeds, chia, cascara sagrada- not altogether - and i can maintain a flat belly and have no bloating. IF is the best thing I've done for my body. Great video❤

When I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease five years ago, it suddenly became so apparent how everything is always centered around food. It was like a gigantic slap in the face. So on one hand, my social life suffers and it's very difficult for me to go out or celebrate with friends. But on the other hand, I realized as a teenager that we have a very strange relationship with food and that it doesn't need to be that way. When I DO go out, I'm able to appreciate everything else so much more!

Hi Bria! This video hit the nail on the head! I’m going through an emotional turmoil and breakup and lots of trauma and this has been showing on my body. What you said it’s 💯 correct. I realize starving myself wasn’t helping but healing my mind and having a better relationship with food it’s what I need to do. You said so many right things in this video, I wish more people would watch this as I agree 10000%. Journaling and releasing the trauma is the first step to healing and therefore shed pounds of pain/weight. Your body stores all those emotions and as you said protects you. Honestly, thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for making this video. I’ve been big my entire life and like you I’ve been in a yo yo of lose some gain some more for what seems like my entire life. I also love sugar always need something sweet after I eat anything. I’m also a Scorpio and yes I hold so many grudges from those who have hurt me and added trauma into my life. I’ve never felt so seen and heard before and this really helped open my eyes. It’s so hard to not listen to what this influencer is saying then this one and on and on. I know what I have to do it just takes me actually getting up and doing it without a time constraint and being so cruel to myself while simultaneously being accountable.

I’ve never had issues with my weight until recently when I gained like 15-20 pounds and my family started to make comments about it. I felt like my being skinny was the only thing that made me pretty so I tried to focus on losing weight by going to the gym and by sometimes not eating at all but it’s honestly been so stressful. I moved away from home for 6 months so I’m really trying to relearn how to eat when I’m hungry and not punish myself with food. I agree with literally everything you mentioned. Listening to my body is definitely my goal for this year above anything else. I’m excited to feel the difference! Thank you for the video. :)

Okay this is so amazing! I’ve always gained and lost very easily after a traumatic event. Now 22 years later, I am 3 years in off being around 20 kilos heavier then my health weight and not being able to loose it like before.. over the years I’ve had more traumatic events and it is now that I am realizing, that I haven’t forgiven the persons hurting me the most.. it’s holding me back in a lot of ways and finally I am able to see they actually helped me see the world in its true colors.
It’s amazing you link sickness to trauma, I’ve been believing this since knowing of my auto immuun disease on my skin. When I started healing myself, the problems has gotten way less! Now my healing can start with food. Thank you ❤

I am 51 yrs old, and i have had eating disorders all my life ,that only stopped whilst i was pregnant with our son 22 yrs ago...only last year, did i make a vow to make my self STRONG , 1st on the inside and then on the outside.while i was never super overweight, i just did not feel like my self ,i wanted to glow, i wanted to look good and wear pretty clothes, and while some ppl told me "im fine" ,i just didnt feel "fine".i am 175 lbs now and the healthiest i have ever been in my life.

Went from dangerously underweight as a dancer in my TEENS to a healthy weight that I was still unhappy with in my late 20s. The flip of weight + not liking my body in either forms did so much to my mental health 😭

I’m so glad this came up on my feed. I’m a guy and I’ve personally experienced a lot of this. There’s so many nuggets of real in here that needs to be said, especially in today’s chaotic social media landscape.
For the last couple years I’ve been just like… lost in the mess of all this. I wanted to loose fat and I felt bad for it because on the surface people looking at it wouldn’t expect that’s what I wanted but… it is what it is wanted! And next to that it felt like the only way to get there was through numerous ways that did not make my body feel good. This video was so incredibly helpful processing a lot of thoughts and feelings around food and my body.

What I love the most about intermittent fasting is that it naturally propels me to drink a lot more green tea, water, and coconut water. It feels good to use the fasting window to hydrate the mind, body, and soul.
This was such a great conversation and so many of the realizations you have came to have been working for me as well this time around, I have been shifting my thoughts to gain health and not the food I have to “give up” to lose this excess weight. got this in my recs. never seen you before. just wanted to say this is very sound advice and i'm sure it's going to put a lot of people watching on the right path. i had to learn these lessons on my own and i'm glad there are people with a platform out there who share this kind of perspective. it is absolutely imperative to approach this journey through the angle of self compassion and kindness to your own body for the results to be everlasting and it has to be sustainable otherwise it will be a lifetime of yo-yoing
Also when it comes to movement: do what makes you feel good and what you enjoy! Not what’s currently trending online. When I stopped trying to become a muscle mommy and then a Pilates princess, and instead implemented movement that I actually enjoyed and that suited my lifestyle, I finally got a routine going. That’s not to say that weightlifting and Pilates can’t be fun, I’m sure it can be. But at the current moment, it does not work for me and I don’t want to keep beating myself up for not being able to get into a routine with it. Now I mainly go for long walks, do dancing / walking workouts and hula hoop and it’s actually working for me because I’m able to exercise consistently. Cause I’m having fun. And you can always build onto those small things after a while.
This video was definitely needed cause I constantly snack and the questions you asked made me realize the fact that I’m not happy with where I am in life and eating sweets make me feel good but shortly after I feel like crap so I know I have to tackle the bigger issue while choosing a better substitute!
I gained 20 lbs since I moved to Florida because my ex used to sl*t shame me because of the attention I would get from other ppl. I never dress exposed or anything, I’m a mom and much too old for that. But that carried on to my job, where the men just were not safe and I just wanted to hide. Before this I was a gym girlie. Loved my body after 3 kids. And I gained weight to feel safe in my body. So men would leave me alone.

i notice this in reverse. ive always been overweight most of my life, but ive recently lost weight. i get not only more attention from men, but like creepy more forward attention and it freaks me out. i dont really wear make up or revealing clothing. i love how i look and feel, but this definitely worries me because i want to lose a little more weight and summer is coming up. conflicting feeling for me. i dont want to gain the weight back just to feel safer at the risk of my health😢

my binging started when i was in about 3rd grade. that was when i began feeling insecure, like i didn't fit in. my negative self image has stayed with me for practically my whole life and it has caused me to binge eat and hate myself for years. this video has really opened up my eyes and i thank you so much. it's never been my body's fault, it was my own mind's.

I'm crying as I'm listening to your video. I struggle with low to 0 appetite and ARFID so I can eat limited foods and it makes me gain weight (not a doctor, cannot explain it). Min. 24:00 when you started talking abount the body positivity movement, you touched my worst fear - that I'm gonna "show myself" that I don't "deserve love" if I lose weight, because I'm gonna like myself more and people are gonna treat me differently. For the first time ever I'm finding someone with similar thoughts, that it's "bad" to want to lose weight because of the movement. Thank you so much for this! You freeded me of my biggest obstacle! You changed my life!
So much trauma and death (and stress induced weight gain and chronic aches) way too much to type. I just have to say THIS CHANNEL is so much more substantial than much of the encouragement I find on TH-cam. You are so constructive in your thinking and articulate with your words and I thank you for being part of the humble beginnings of me dragging myself out of this depression and back into a life filled with gratitude and good health.
Definitely agree with this 💗 well said. I struggled with binge eating for years but after realizing that I ate most of my calories at night, I just tried to eat a lot every morning/afternoon so I would be too full later. Also going for a walk everyday after work to clear my mind and I wrote out my “why” for weight loss, which was because I hated how my stomach hurt so badly after every binge and I just wanted to feel good in my skin
genuinely this was one of the best videos i could have ever watched regarding weight loss. i’m 5’2 and have always been the smallest one in the family. my family was considered obese by a lot of doctors and i was the only one that stood out. i never had a problem with their weight, nor my own until they started to comment on it. my mother, who was the heaviest, made it an effort to keep me small. and i never thought much of it. and it got pretty bad after she herself went on a diet and got a gastric sleeve, loosing close to 300 pounds. every month our family was on new diets, adding more protein and larger portions to keep us “full”. we went on fasts that lasted days at point, just because of our relationship with food changed as a unit. i developed a really bad relationship with food during high school, and ended up with an ed that i still struggle with today. i was 17 and 110-115 lbs at my lowest. yet everytime i looked in the mirror i could only focus on my stomach and what to do about it. i’m now 20 and i reached my highest weight of 180. and it took everything in my being to not restrict and harm myself for it. but like you said, my body is trying to protect me. for years i denied its right to feel satisfied and constantly threw confusion of when it would be fed. i had so many people comment on my smallness for so long that i felt that i let people down for getting to this weight when i should really have been thinking for myself. i want to lose weight, i really do. and following so many different things on the internet from people with my dream body ultimately lead me to where i am now. but this past week, ive been really focusing on what my body needs to get to a goal weight. to a goal health. i’m learning about it and incorporating new habits that are in the same vein as my old ones. and im already feeling significant differences in my body that i haven’t felt in a while. but it feels different, it feels healthier. and im glad that information like this is being shared on a very larger scale so it reaches people who are too struggling in this world of misinformation/harmful information.

three weeks ago I said no more calorie counting, no more fad diets, no more diets in general. I am focusing on intuitive eating. It's been pretty hard so far (I am a binger/emotional eater and have so much shame) but I'm giving myself a lot of time to figure this out and have a good relationship with food :) this video has been helpful, thank you!

Great information! Once you realize that the majority of your weight loss journey requires that you work on what’s inside your head, you’ll have better success. It is about mindset. I also struggle with listening to my body. I know a food doesn’t agree with my body but end up eating it b/c it tastes good. Then I regret it…rinse and repeat.😩
