    Thank you so very much, paulmagicflute! This is absolutely lovely stuff. Became a fan of PL footie in about 2008. Arsenal since 2010. Still a babe in the woods.
    Took a trip over there with a dear friend in 2011 and saw 8 games over three weeks in Wales, England and Scotland (Cardiff, London, Manchester and near West Lothian). Time of my life!
    I’ve read and studied all I have been able to get my hands on and have thoroughly enjoyed the journey. Thank you for adding to my library.
    How anyone can downvote these generous postings is beyond me.
    Cheers from Colorado!!!

    Barry Davies was such a great commentator. Doesnt feel the need to chat or banter over what's happening, just says the names of the player in posession and lets the action speak for itself. The best

    I guess Cloughie had the last laugh: took Forest from obscurity to League champions and to European Cups, briefly eclipsing Liverpool's dominance. I'd love to know why Clough disliked Revie, in the previous episode Bob Stokoe accused Revie of trying to bribe him when he was at Bury. Great era, great show.

    • @tonybates7870
      @tonybates7870 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think you answered your own question there - Clough obviously knew Revie was bent and that, along with Leeds' leg-breaking style (Clough's playing career was cut short by a serious injury and I'm sure that affected his view) was easily enough to make the future Forest manager despise him.

    'Everton was the final straw for Brian Clough'..Well if you look up the records, Clough had already been sacked before Leeds loss to Everton. He was sacked after Leeds 1 all draw at home to Luton Town. He was sacked on September 12th, 1974.

    Also, I think on the probabilties, Revie did offer bribes and was corrupt. Bob Stokoe said it hundreds of times and Revie never sued him, Frank Mclintock has made similar allegations in his autobiography, but who is to say Hughes didn't do what Smith alleged. This sort of thing was probably rife in soccer at the time. Who is to say that the sainted Matt Busby and Bill Shankly didn't offer bribes?

    Paul,
    Emlyn Hughes' comments about Don Revie trying to get extra money for the England players at a time when players were not as well paid seem harsh. He was a manager trying to look after his players-and remember those players were hardly pulling up trees for England at this time.

    Emlyn Hughes is saying that Revie was money ruled, and maybe he was, but according to Tommy Smith's 2008 autobiography, Hughes himself wasn't whiter than white either, as he allegedly was going to offer Arsenal players £50 each to throw their title deciding match with Liverpool in May 1972. Smith was disgusted at the time. Pots and kettles come to mind.

    According to Tommy Smith in 2008 Hughes told him that in May 1972, several Arsenal players were willing to throw the game for £50 a man... so doesn't it make his claims about Revie look hypocritical if Smith is telling the truth?

      @JohnSmith-el2nj 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually it's hard to say who was more reviled, Clough or Revie. Clough had been successively chucked from Derby and Brighton, so nobody was really on his side at the time. And Revie didn't exactly set the world on fire at the England job. Though at least he got picked for it - more than could be said for old Big 'Ead.

      Dutch Van Helsing do you know the details behind that? The guy was in a bad way, struggling to live and his benefit had been stopped. He was desperate for money and a newspaper exploited him. Obviously Leeds players weren’t gonna be happy with him, were they? Same paper also approached another ex player Mike O’Grady... told him they were gonna run with the story anyway and did he want money to put his name to it - he obviously declined. It’s bullshit - don’t believe everything you read.

  • @Kevinasp
    @Kevinasp 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, I don't think they got on anyway, due to a clash of personalities. Smith said Hughes was the only member of the Liverpool squad he never got on with but he respected him as a player. However what increased the hatred probably was in 1973 when Smith was replaced as captain by Hughes, and perhaps, if it did occur, this incident of Hughes trying to brible opposition players.
