  • This Spring I have overwintered single brood chamber colonies and double brood chamber colonies. Both need room to expand. Singles become doubles and doubles sometimes become triples! see my website at www.BeeWhisperer.us

Please get what is called a "dead cat" for your microphone. The wind noise is incredibly distracting

Question. You have reflective, then a shim and then insulation. Does the moisture gather under the insulation? Or the vent hole helps the moisture to escape?

This has been wonderful! Thank you. I live in Down East Maine so this applies to me. I will continue to follow you.

Okay. I'm confused. Before watching this video, I watched the one where you drew the diagrams and extolled the benefits of 'only one' brood chamber. Obiously I'm a beginner, in my 4th week of beekeeping. I don't know whether to put on an excluder and a honey super, or another brood chamber, or what.

Start beekeeping with two deep brood chambers, it is much more forgiving of mistakes. In time try one or two with single brood chambers when you have learned to read the signs of what the bees are telling you.

What is the purpose of reversing the boxes?

For a more rapid growth of the brood chamber as the empty combs are preheated by the cluster below them.

Is that the secret? Overwintered with hopguard and formic pro. Those hives look great. I started last season and I was going to keep all singles but I have 1 that looks like your 1st single and I think I will put on another deep and see if I can get a good split off it? I am looking for honey production this year, I think if I leave them in a deep they will swarm. I do have 2 supers on over the queen excluder now for space.

No the hopguard and formic pro are well used up I was just slow in clearing up used treatments (this is not like using syntheics where it is VERY important to remove treatments) For honey production I will take the single deeps to doubles then just before the main flow shake the queen down to the bottom box and put in the queen excluder with brood above and below the excluder. That above emerges and gets back filled with honey.

Sounds good, thanks. I have learned so much from your videos. Thanks for your time.

In this video you had 2 deeps that were fully packed. Could you have left the bottom box where it was and put your new deep box between the full ones ?

Generally it is not a good idea to split the brood chamber but if the weather was very warm that would still probably work.

@@BeekeepingwithTheBeeWhisperer wouldn't that be similar to the Demaree system if they do it like I asked ?

What nice strong hives for the first part of April. You should make many nucs with all that brood. Have a great day.

Love the commentary on what you're seeing. What is your definition of night temperature are okay for hive body reversal?
