Is the VW ID.Buzz as Enchanting As We All Want It To Be?

- We've seen it for awhile but are still waiting for the ID.Buzz to hit the shores of North America. The version we'll get is going the be a 3 row only which will put this in a unique position to compete against the currently limited minivan segment and the styling is likely to draw folks who were looking for a different vehicle all together but fell in love with the looks. The retro roots and tech forward design have blended together very nicely to give you all the functions you need without making things too cluttered up throughout the interior and up on the dash. If you need maximum cargo capacity there are going to be other options that serve your needs better but you'll be hard pressed to find a vehicle this flexible that's also this fun.

It is insane how long this has taken to come to the US. They showed this at LA Auto Show like 5 or 6 years ago.
Six? They’ve had a concept out in 2001!
I'm hoping it doesn't get canceled at this point but I don't think it will. -Travis
I guess they need to setup production in the U.S. as they are still going flat out to supply Europe. As an owner I can say that by the time you can buy in the U.S. we will have suffered all of the startup problems - and there were/are quire a few 😤
@AAutoBuyersGuide hey there, does it have camp mode like Tesla?
This is my first time seeing Travis do the reviews. Great job, especially since it seem you are pressed for time around so many other people.
Agreed.
Thank you, I've got great reference material. -Travis
This guy did a great job with this video. Informative, not boring, good personal inserts, and also to whoever is behind the cam, good work too.
About the VW. I like this!! I think that it'd be so cool to see these on the road here. Stoked for you all to cover it with more detail and road tests when available. Good video you all.
Wholesome and based comment ❤
I like this guy. Keep ‘em comin’, chief.
Will do! -Travis
While nothing's set in stone in terms as specs I feel like it's a good van.@@AAutoBuyersGuide
Thank You for supporting Electric Vehicles and for All that you are doing for our Planet Earth.... Peace.. Shalom.. Salam.. Namaste 🙏🏻 😊 🌈 ✌ ☮ ❤
The Buzz is one of my favorite vehicles. I just wish we could get the short version, awd, and with more range.
No argument here. -Travis
The best thing about this is that it's an electric vehicle with normal door handles.
Fair point. -Travis
The worst thing about it is that it's a battery car, which are crappy and expensive to maintain. A gas model would be so much better and VW would sell way more.
Nice job Travis. Now I have to convince my wife to get this over the Kia Ev9.
I'd want to drive it first to say for sure but I'd probably prefer this overall if I had to pick one. -Travis
If my wife was more into EV Vans, I would wait for this but not the case. I love this style of van..so retro & modern all at once. Great job VW! Thanks for the cool review
I’m 37 and they’ve been talking about this since I was in High School. This thing should be perfect since it’s taken this long.
They haven't been talking about this one specifically but it's taking longer than it ought to regardless. -Travis
Other videos have commented that the second row trays are not going to be on the production id buzz, but here they are again. if VW keeps showing them, people are going to expect them. And I now expect them.
I would also like to see the removable center have accessories like airplane-style fold out tray version or even a bench seat and seatbelt.
Travis, great review! Would love if you showed the sliding 2nd row windows and the opaque switch in-between driver and passenger seat on the ceiling. Also, I think the 2nd row folds flat for an optional bed mattress and the center arm rest also comes out from other videos reviews
We had a tight window but I appreciate the feedback. If we get a chance to spend more time with it we'll cover as much as we can! -Travis
If they had a 2 row hybrid option (full EV is simply not an option for me) I would be all over this thing in Canada.
I was excited about this until they announced the unnecessary third row and extra length for the US version. It looks so much cooler in the European smaller version. Why do they think we all want that?
Because that's what people keep buying.
Very nice flat front floor between the front seats but can the console be removed? essential for a camper. So not practical when integrated into the dash like in the Sienna Hybrid.
I didn't have a chance to try but if we get one for testing I'm sure the van camper will be considered in the review. -Travis
I'm definitely planning on buying one of these. They gotta put in bench type seats with a table somewhere tho. Maybe something where the second row seats can swivle and be arranged as bench seats with seats in the back that can lay down.
I'm sure there will be many aftermarket customization options. -Travis
@@AAutoBuyersGuide yea, but I mean, kinda seems bland the way it is now.
This thing has so much CHARACTER, I love it
We could use more of it on the road today. -Travis
Travis, I used the most powerful search engines known to humanity and I believe I am entitled to say VW ID Bust® is an original appellation for this perpetually gestating machine. 😁
I hope it's not a bust, I'd love to spend a few weeks with one. -Travis
@@AAutoBuyersGuide VW has been previewing the second coming of the Microbus longer than you have been alive.
@@rightlanehog3151 Hate all you want, this thing will be on the roads by the end of the year in the US, and people will want it. Already happening in Europe. The difference between all of those “second coming of the microbes previews” is that those were all concept vehicles, this is not, this is a real vehicle that will be sold in the US and is already sold and in production in Europe.
I think it looks adorable. I love that color combo. It’s less bold than the yellow white combo
But the interior color looks weird and imo it should match the exterior color
The peach/cream-ish interior probably isn't the best match to the exterior but it creates a pleasant place to be in the cabin. -Travis
@@AAutoBuyersGuide I think it looks better with a different exterior color like probably an orange exterior like the fiat 500e
It's fun seeing VW finally make this van after teasing it for almost 25 years. First Microbus concept came out in 2001.
Many will be glad to see it finally come to life. -Travis
That open center is a godsend for us tall guys. I miss the days of bench seats. These giant center consoles dif into the sides of my knees. If shifters are going electric they need to go back on the column like this and the electric hyundai that is out as well
There was plenty of space inside for taller folks. -Travis
Compared to the cybertruck, I think it looks a lot better. Some people might say that it is more versatile, being able to carry seven passengers. Considering Volkswagen build quality compared to Tesla, I personally would spend the extra money rather than driving around in a bedpan.
If you needed a bed for hauling this wouldn't be that helpful but for everything else I would pick a Buzz over the Cybertruck...unless the way they drive isn't what I expect them to be. -Travis
If I needed a bed, I would have the store where I bought it from, deliver the bed, because that is part of there business. Maybe if I wanted to get some manure, the CT would be a better choice.
Volkswagen only makes Porsche, Audi, Bentley... and will make the new Scout
Well done, Travis! Loving the Buzz.
I wouldn't mind having one in our long term fleet but the future is hard to predict. -Travis
@@AAutoBuyersGuide I definitely wouldn't mind having one in my garage!
As a good American. I’m waiting for that four row…
If anywhere there would be one you can count on the good 'ol U S of A. -Travis
Thumbs up for a good review and for good taste in phones :)
Were the buttons on the steering wheel a capacitive touch or physically actuated design? I am not convinced that capacitive touch buttons on a steering wheel are an improvement.
I never heard, does the 2nd row seating fold flat also ?
From other review sources, yes. I think they might have a mattress option
@@ndg9367correct
I'm super wondering if this 2024 ID Buzz comes with 3 years unlimited EA charging or not ?
Excellent quick look Travis!! Hope VW releases more function details soon. Looks as family capable as our current minivan and the 3rd row is far friendlier than most SUV back rows. Only shame like to be that as a brickish EV, the Buzz is going to be hard on energy. Any clue whether VW will put a heat pump in the US Buzz??
At the moment, Canada will have both a 7 seater and an exclusive 5 seat version that isn't coming to the US. I'm hoping the wheelbase is shortened for the 5 seater, but I doubt it.
is VW ever going to ship this bus?
Hopefully, yes. -Travis
I was considering the VW Buzz for my next vehicle since I want a minivan and prefer to go with a BEV, but estimated pricing and issues that people have had with electric VWs such as the ID4 have made me reluctant to buy a Buzz instead of something like a Toyota Sienna.
New car warranty goes a long way. -Travis
@@AAutoBuyersGuide not needing to bring a car in to the dealership for a warranty repair is better than having a warranty. Inconvenient to be without your main vehicle even if a warranty repair will be done. Plus, my newest car is 16 years old, so I want a car that will be reliable far beyond its warranty.
Excellent review.
Thank you for watching! -Travis
This with a hybrid motor (not electric) and a strong accessory market would make this the best vehicle ever. I’d buy one of these in an absolute heartbeat as a single dude. The back two rows of seats would get ripped out, and it’d be an awesome adventure vehicle
Starting Cost is estimated at $50,000 USD.
Starting Range is approximated around 260 miles.
DC Fast Charge rate is about 360 MORPH (Miles of Range Per Hour), so it'll go from 10% to 80% in 30 min.
Alex got huge😂
Hibernation bod. -Travis
@@AAutoBuyersGuideLOL!
Can you remove the rear seats, like if you ever had to transport something big?
I didn't have a chance to ask but I would certainly hope so. -Travis
They need to hurry up and bring this to market! I'm also hoping it qualifies for the tax credit.
Dammit! I wanted the two row.😕
Can’t wait for the camper version 🏕️🏄🏽🌻
I would like to see Alex review this car too!
I.d love for Alex to get it as a long term review option. -Travis
lol what an abrupt ending
Sometimes things happen with footage and you don't realize it till you're already 2 time zones away from the vehicle you recorded with. We do our best. -Travis
Such a better use of volume than a monstrosity like the Tahoe or Suburban. If only it was cheaper... (guessing it'll be expensive as is the norm for American EVs).
I absolutely love the design! It's retro, yet modern. It looks highly functional and is a very sensible size. Modern minivans have gotten not-so-mini and very expensive. I do wish they offered it with an ICE. I don't foresee this vehicle doing well in the U.S. even though I want it to. It's hyper niche. Only 6% of Americans polled said their next new vehicle will be an EV. Combine that with a minivan, which sells pretty poorly in the U.S., and from a niche brand like VW that doesn't sell that many cars comparatively with a small dealership network. I will honestly be surprised if this vehicle survives in the U.S. for more than a single generation.
You may be right but I hope it does survive. -Travis
EV is the future and it s irreversible. When it come to the Buzz, if VW can get the spec right i don t see this not be a success. It has no competition.
@@jonpetter8921 the Smart Fortwo had no competition either and look how that turned out in the U.S.
@@palebeachbum Smart Forwo is not ID Buzz. That s the difference.
@@jonpetter8921 a lack of competition does not guarantee success. That's my point relative to your statement.
It should be here at VW America dealerships by the fall of 2024.
That would be great, would love to see these on the road. -Travis
Someone with lots of kids like myself wants this. I hope they don’t overprice it
It won't be cheap but everyone has their own definition of overpriced. -Travis
Where is the original Alex on Autos guy??
Alex (of Alex on Autos) hasn't gone anywhere except a short vacation while the Chicago Auto Show is happening. He wanted to grow the team and changed the name to Auto Buyers Guide to better reflect the fact that it's not just him in front of the camera. -Travis
bumbed we don't get the shorter option
I'm with you there. -Travis
I hope they give it ample power and range. I've heard a lot of reviews allude to this being low on both...at that price yikes
Machined wheels...More biz for my biz! Curb rash time...😂
Is this already available for sale in Europe? It has been "coming soon" to the U.S.S forever. 🤔🙄
The shorter one is already available in Europe - not sure about this longer one - I think not.
Any commitment on deliveries?
Didn't have a chance to talk to anyone about it. -Travis
wondering if a 4x8 piece of plywood would lay flat
Price? Range?
Looks cool, but Toyota haice would be great for North America too, and Toyota coaster
I'd love to see the vehicles announced for North America (like this one) get here before we start putting together a wish list of vehicles that haven't been announced. -Travis
It needs that old-style V out front.
It would be nice, but they undoubtedly spent hundreds of thousands of dollars designing their logo recently to the exact same logo, so they're probably not about to use anything else.
I'm not so sure that would be a better alternative than what it has now. -Travis
Battery is at 76%
It has 199 miles of range according to the dash.
ignoring all other variables...
This van has a range of about 260 miles.
People are going to need to lay on top of the dash to windex the inside of the windshield.
I'm sure you can buy an extending pole to make things easier, maybe even VW branded. -Travis
I have given up on ever getting something I'd like from VW. I had an 85 Jetta and the incredible 87 Quantum Syncro. I love the VW vans but this thing needed a range extender motor. It will have AWD though. I feel VW never really understands the US market.
What a pity the second row seats aren’t foldable
They do fold down. -Travis
Yes, you can take out the 3rd row.
If it had a 500 mile range id buy one tomorrow.
Until then it's not practical for me and my family.
500 miles seems like such an arbitrary number, especially compared to the statistical data that says the average drivers daily mileage is less than 50 miles. -Travis
@AAutoBuyersGuide Well, when it takes 1.5 hours to get to the closest grocery store, 200 miles range ain't cutting it.
Much better than the Routan
Very different than the Routan. -Travis
He didn't even attempt to fold the second-row seats! With those bright red pull tags, even a novice would have tried to fold it!
It's not childseat friendly if belts are not integrated with set.
yes
Succinct. -Travis
Nice little camper in perspective except that I wouldn't sleep peacefully in there during the recharge of the 77 Kilowatt-Hour battery as I would not feel more comfortable in any other EV in the same circumstances. I'd rather be on a full 50 gallon tank...it's that bad.
I can't say I share the concern. -Travis
Look up ev fires . Definitely something to think about . @@AAutoBuyersGuide
Soooo... Since I can't afford rent or a mortgage is there room for me to sleep in there in between Uber trips? I mean let's get real. That's what we're buying this cute buzz for.
Is this car for sell now? Or what
I really like it, but it's going to be all about pricing for me. We could use a short range BEV for a city runabout but not if it's going to be $50k+
This likely won't fit into that short range runabout category. -Travis
Rich people car.
Make a hybrid version!
Can't see that happening at this point. -Travis
Hard to imagine this being decent. VW has had issues with electrical parts for years and now pushing full EV's when they can't even get the simple electric parts done right seems like high risk on your resale value. Not only that it has taken so long and still seems a ways out. All the while we are seeing EV models discontinued and even Ford cancelling their 12 billion dollar battery facility. The longer EV's are out and get into people's hands the more issues they bring to light. Be it the battery in cold weather and in a lot of instances not charging for hours because the battery has to warm up to a certain temp to fast charge. Or that a lot of people are seeing major issues with tire wear because of not only the extra weight of an EV but also the Torque with the acceleration.
Not to mention that the wrecks people have with EV's are again way more deadly because of the weight of the vehicles. Also some safety measures on some roads also don't account for such high weights and forces in smaller packages and there have been issues with that in some states as well. Not to mention in some states to make up for the gas tax are charging insane amounts of money for car registration each year. It is one thing to buy gas each month but for instance imagine having to foot the bill for the gas tax on it each year all at once. Not fun. California and Pennsylvania are both over 50 cents a gallon so they are having to make that up with registration costs.
Not to mention auto makers are losing massive amounts of money on EV's each time they sell one. Which is bad for them and us. Meaning we are actually buying a vehicle that is more expensive than what we pay. Meaning when something does go wrong the parts are going to be more expensive than most anticipate.
you cant charge it with the door open....
That's not something I had considered, I'll have to look closer next time to see if that's the case. -Travis
Who’s this guy????
Hi, I'm Travis 👋🏽 -Travis
So, after showing me doors, seats and screens, you never answered the question you posed in the title. Is it as an enchanting as we all want it to be???
I'd have to drive it to be able to do that, and what may be enchanting to me may differ from you. -Travis
@@AAutoBuyersGuideand your reply should be the title of your video then.

this is what i concern most, the freaking FREE CHARGING !!!!!
Campervan?
I'm sure we'll see some turned into just that. -Travis
I’d want to remove the third row.
Only problem I see is EPEN$IVE !
I'll wait to pass judgement till there are final numbers announced. -Travis
And short range.
They need to release this thing already. Seeming like it’s gonna get cancelled in the USA
ID Buzz costs whay too much....
It won't be cheap. -Travis
Waited forever for this and really wished it hadn't been a BEV. Easily going to be as much as an EV9 so loaded I'd expect $75k. Also being a BEV no reason to buy one 4-5 years old with reduced distance. A Real shame, love the look of it.
BEV's lose range, yes, but that loss is quite minimal. -Travis
Nice design, shame the range sucks and the price is too high…
Back to the drawing board VW.
That lower grill & window controls are not the "right move for any market".
I'm not sure I know what you mean. -Travis
Try cleaning the junk out that lower grill will catch. It probably has a bottom chin piece that runs across so no bottom access. The Windows controls, you should be aware of the annoying REAR button.@@AAutoBuyersGuide
No rail system is VERY disappointing.
It’ll be incredibly expensive to maintain nothing like the old original Volkswagen. Skip all of this and go get ia hybrid minivan.
Did you mean to say maintain or repair? Maintenance cost on EVs is exceptionally low. -Travis
@@AAutoBuyersGuide yeah but it's a VW... maintenance aside, repairs on this are going to be way overpriced

@@AAutoBuyersGuide yeah thanks for the reply Travis, I’m nagging about the trend of these EV’s they all seem to like the idea of having cover less moonroofs for some reason, maybe to scoop out some head room? Since the battery sits underneath the floor which steals space vertically.

Alex on autos why isn’t Alex doing these videos?? new guy and cameraman adjust your shot focus on the vehicle not the guy in the middle of the frame I enjoyed the content so much more before these new people came in jeez!!
It's taken too many years, is too big & too expensive for me to care anymore....
I don't think it's too big, it might even be too small for some looking for a family mover. I'd argue it isn't, but I'm not in the market for any 3 row vehicle. -Travis
Just a little note: The short flat nose is not because of impact laws changing. It’s because an EV does not have a big metal engine threatening your legs in an accident.
My comment about the nose was referencing the fact that it's uncommon to have a passenger vehicle like this with such a short nose and that I would be curious to see the crash structure because of this unusual design. -Travis
Far too expensive,
