    The best blade geometry in my entire collection is probably my Spyderco Yojumbo. The hollow grind is Amazing! If you get one you Have to grind the bottom of the blade stock so it don't your finger, but once you do its a bad azz knife.

    Any experience with Stedemon/Maxace?
    Their designs can definitely be polarizing, but they consistently have the best cutting geometry of any folding production knives Ive ever handled at any price.
    My Stedemon Frida is .008" bte. If you just feel the grind without looking at it you'd swear it was a deep hollow zero grind.
    Certainly worth a look.

    Awesome job with this vid, tons of info especially for someone just getting into the knife world. Lots of reasons for all the different geometries on slicers, hard use, and over the top blade profiles. That's the reason I carry multiple knives, I want something that cuts good and something I can abuse. Keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable.

    Awesome! I knew I'd appreciate your thoughts on this subject. I never really factored in ergos or blade steel when attempting to get a knife with good edge geometry. But it makes total sense. You've quickly become my go-to for knife related content. Thanks dude keep it up 👊

    Yeah I love my 940 with ti scales. It definitely has a strange blade thickness.
    My 3 most carried knives for work my ad10, endela with 20cv and my 940.
    I can do crazy stuff with my ad10 but it's limits...it only got about halfway through 8awg wire haha.
    Awesome video.

    It rare to hear a 1/8 blade stock being called crazy thick. So many knives are way thicker than that but on a narrow blade with a saber grind that blade could/should be done with thinner stock or do a ffg grind on it.
    I'm a fan of 0.080 to 0.100 stock myself. Have a few knives and never had issues with them but they cut so much better than a lot of knives. For edc folders/small fixed blades you don't really need much more. Sure I dig my 940 and do thing with it I probably shouldn't but using it vs a Chaparral or a Cultrotech Slim with 0.080"/2mm blade and 0.010 and 0.015 bte you see and feel a huge difference.

    • @NeevesKnives
      @NeevesKnives  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it all depends on the blade and many other factors, the geometry, the lock, size, intended use, exc.. but as far as edc knives go that are not intended for hard use, the thinner the better as far as good cutting performance goes, you can definitely have a some what robust stock with good slicing geometry if the blade is broad enough or hollow. Because I do think to thin can be a thing especially with certain steels

    In this country blade stock thickness and blade length are related. Very few people will buy say a 3 inch blade with super thin blade stock. It's too reminiscent of cheap kitchen paring knives we used when growing uo. They may work for cutting cherry tomatoes but bend too easily. A full flat grind would be better on the CRKT CEO, but if you thin the blade stock below a certain threshold people won't buy them.

    Thank you so much for this! I’ve wanted to know more about different thicknesses. I carry and use an Izula, which has a maximum thickness of .16, but it has a distal taper. It could be fired from a cannon as an anti-tank round, rummaged out of the rubble and dusted off, but it really doesn’t slice that well. I’ve got my eyes squarely on Bark River as my next knife, but they have models anywhere from .16 all the way up to .22, and I don’t want to get another hard use knife that is so optimized to take a beating that it can’t do lighter tasks. Is there a general ratio of thickness/width that allows for grinds that can slice well?

    • @NeevesKnives
      @NeevesKnives  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I say a good grind can start at 120 thousands like civivi but it has to have a great taper like civivi. Anything less is good as long as it has a tall grind if it's short it should be hollow. If you look at the plunge you can tell, I did a video a while back on how to see good geometry from a picture online

    In more detail what do you mean by very rapid?

    • @najidrafee5889
      @najidrafee5889 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think he means the grind escalated so quickly from thick to thin. Like an axe.

    • @NeevesKnives
      @NeevesKnives  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes exactly, from the thickest point to the thinnest is a rapid decline, think about the difference from an ax to a chef knife, hollow grinds exist for a couple reasons one is to rapidly drop to a thin grind so that the thin grind can slowly drop to the cutting edge also so that the thickness behind the edge says the same thickness so it doesn't rapidly get thicker from Sharpening, a knife with thick geometry only gets worse with every Sharpening, but a hollow stays the same for a long time.

    • @cueball981
      @cueball981 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      An axe is a wedged shape; thick at the back and narrowing apidly to a very thin edge creating a wedge that's better for splitting than cutting through material.

      I have one and think it's great, the YOJIMBO is probably better for most because of its regular size, but I think it's great, the tips can be fragile as it's original intent is a fighting knife, but it also works great as a work knife as long as your careful with its tip, amazing hollow grind

    "It's a multiuse knife, it should be able to do all kinds of tasks" then why can't it do any kind of tasks? Like if you can't grip it to do heavy duty use and if the blade geometry is bad for light but effective slicing and so on, then what is the philosophy behind that? How does it make to sense make a multi-purpose knife that can't do much of anything when it should be decent at everything?

    As a wise president once said - WROOONG.
    This theory doesn't always apply just because of a thick spine or the type of grind. I suggest actually testing and showing things instead of yapping, that would make this video more objective and educational...

    • @NeevesKnives
      @NeevesKnives  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NeevesKnives I've made knives myself, I ve been sharpening knives since I was a kid. I could sharpen a 2.5cm(1inch in football field bald chicken freedom measure) wide pipe and it would cut decent.
      To be honest the only thing that makes a decent cutter or not with blades under 4mm thick is the angle of a leading edge bevel. Anything over that doesn't matter. I could point out more things which don't really add up but I don't think you'd wanna hear em. Im quite new to your channel and I don't say I dislike the videos, they re a pretty good point of reference for which knives are smooth and a good carry I just didn't like the theory in this video.

    Gotta decide if you want robust or slicey. Every knife you showed as slicey, is not robust at all. As good as the chapparal is slicey, its easily broken with work that id do with a 940. I totally get what youre trying to show but you can't have a fillet knife with strength of a AD-20, you have to sacrifice something to gain another.

    • @NeevesKnives
      @NeevesKnives  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely, and that's why I was saying it needs a grind that supports its build and intent, a hard user should not be super slicey, but there are some amazing large tough built knives with amazing geometry for hard use cutting

They’re beauties and absolutely collectible, but not designed for most every day cutting tasks.
