I think there's a strong chance this "synesthesia" is a side effect of drug use/abuse (wanted or unwanted "side effect")
I see music in colors, shapes, and even numbers. If I hear a hardcore or metal riff, I can easily assign a four digit code to it. Some riffs even take the shape of certain vehicles, oddly enough.
