A nice fact about Inigo Montoya: The actor that played him, Mandy Patinkin, had just lost his father to cancer when he took this role. He has an amazing anecdote about the final fight being absolutely cathartic for him. He'd said, "I want my father back you son-of-a-bitch," was a line he felt he was saying to Cancer itself.

The mask reference is actually a joke referencing Andre the Giant, seeing how Andre was a wrestler and they sometime wear masks. An old wrestling match with Andre the Giant and his opponent, the opponent was wearing a mask and Andre ripped it off to reveal it was some famous wrestler fighting incognito. As a wrestling fan, Rob Reiner wrote that joke in to see if anyone would catch it

There's a reason this 33 year old film still works so well. Actually, several:
    1) The story is simple, but classical. Also, relatable.
    2) The characters are straight-forward, and cheesy, but in a good way
    3) The hero actually "dies" in the film (that never happens)!
    4) So much of the humor is so inherently stereotypical of certain groups of people... but never in a "bad" way. They're actually healthy stereotypes, that aren't designed to insult or demean those groups. But actually to enhance the characters.
    5) The secondary characters are every bit as important as the romantic leads (Inigo Montoya is secretly the best thing about this flick).
    6) I can't watch Andre, The Giant in this film without shedding tears, because he died WAY BEFORE HIS TIME!!

    • @westingtyler1

I think a big deal, and I think Lindsey Ellis has mentioned it in her vids, is.. movies that aren't afraid to be sincere. for example MCU marvel movies, any time something emotional or sincere happens, it QUICKLY gets undercut with a cynical joke or an explosion, because there's this hollywood trend that just being sincerely dramatic or emotional, is "lame". Guardians of the Galaxy is an example of an otherwise good movie where the writers were like "oh no! the character said something honest! now have them roll their eyes so the audience doesn't!" I think people are in the mood again for movies like Princess Bride that dare to be sincere without cynically undercutting itself constantly.

This was one of my dad’s favourite movies ever. He passed away from cancer almost 6 years ago, and I hadn’t been able to watch it since he died. Part of the reason for that is Inigo’s line “I want my father back”, because Mandy Patinkin’s father also died of cancer, and when he took this role, he said that line to the cancer that took his own father. That makes it even more poignant for me as a viewer who has also lost a father.

I don't think this could possibly be done again even half as good. Andre, though, was easily the best. And the best comedic line in the whole movie between him and Billy Crystal (Miracle Max) gets me laughing every single time.
Max: Beat it! Or I'll call the Brute Squad!
Fezzik: I'm on the Brute Squad.
Max, looking up at him, surprised: You *are* the Brute Squad!

A thing that happened during the production of this movie:
Andre the Giant (Fezzik) wasn't really an actor and he kept reading his lines in a slow, lugubrious manner. It was a tricky situation because as time passed no one knew how to tell a 7'5", 500lb man he was doing it wrong. Then one day during rehearsals, as Andre sat there with the script in his hand reading his lines very slowly, Mandy Patinkin, in character as Inigo, yelled, "Faster, Fezzik!" and slapped Andre hard in the face. The shock of it brought Andre out of his stupor and after that, his line readings were fine.

    • @ericjamieson
      @ericjamieson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@Freerefill Yeah exactly, wrestlers have to be able to act to at least some extent, but they're used to playing off each other, not so much just reading lines. So Mandy Patinkin playing Fezzik in character probably helped him get into it.

This is my favorite film. I mean that. When people ask me what my favorite film is, I say "The Princess Bride" without hesitation. I have seen this movie countless times and while I think the humor is very good and it always gives me a good chuckle, I felt the humor was rejuvenated by seeing the reaction of a new viewer of the film. I was laughing out loud at jokes I had long since taken for granted. So thank you for your review and keep them coming! I would definitely recommend Young Frankenstein, my second favorite film, if you haven't seen it yet.

She was also amazing in a later film with her then-husband Sean Penn, called “She’s So Lovely.” Great movie! And of course her role in the new Wonder Woman movies is fun to watch.
She recently directed a movie called “LAND” about a woman, disenchanted with the world around her, moves to the harsh wilderness of the Rockies in search of a meaning to her life.

The filming of this movie was one of the happiest times in the Andre the Giant's life. It was the first time he ever felt normal and people weren't looking at him as if he were some type of freak. The cast has just wonderful memories of him along with the regular laundry drinking stories.
Andre the Giant was in so much pain from his back he couldn't even hold Robin up they had to lower down on cables and keep weight off of her. Andre flipped over a car with four guys in it after they tried to pick a fight with him, yet his back was so bad he could not hold 100 lb Robin Wright in his arms. 10 years earlier Andre could have caught her just jumping from the Second Story.
The funniest is that on set he let out a loud 40-second long fart. Everybody was standing around dumbfounded and finally Rob Reiner the director goes "Are you ok?
Andre, looked at him, smiled and said "I am now boss!"
Tim White who was a professional wrestling referee and was Andre's Handler, that is he made sure Andre have hotel rooms with king size beds ready in the cities they were going to etc said that Andre had never really considered to being an actor, but was truly heartbroken at the end because he loved feeling like a regular person as he did during the filming process. Tim said that was the happiest he had ever seen Andre.

The man who played Inigo Montoya said that the reason why the final "prepare to die" scene was so heartfelt was that when he pictured the six fingered man he was actually picturing the cancer that took his father. He said the "I want my father back, you son of a bitch" line was the hardest to deliver in the whole script.
    Also, I second the 'A Knight's Tale' recommendation. 11/10

Last year there was a "remake" on Quibi where several actors, including much of the cast, reenacted the movie via Zoom and Skype. And at the end, Rob Reiner played the kid in bed with his dad Carl finishing the book and saying, "As you wish." It was essentially the last acting Carl did before he passed. And remembering it makes me tear up as I'm typing it.

what always gets me is from the start Inigo lets Westley wait hill he was ready, he even hands him is sword, completely trusting that Westley was a man of honor just based on the first few minutes of conversing. Right from the start they have immediate respect for each other and that runs all the way until the end when Westley just knocks him out. I wish we had just a fraction of that in our actual society!
