Just some advice, next time tape the edge of the entire table, then pour. After the top cures to a honey like thick consistency then pull tape and let it flow. Pouring directly on top with no tape edge is basically just $$$ pouring onto the floor...lol. Hope this helps...👍
I may have a few questions along this process, but my first question is the seal coat. I didn’t see you apply one. Did you? Also, how did you know how much epoxy to make for each indented panel, because I figure you to do each of those separately but you don’t want to make too much. Also when you did the flood coat over the top, did you sand the top of those panel portions so they would affix? I am so nervous to work on this project, but my door is finally sanded and ready and I figure I should start. I know I will do a little test project first but no matter...
I didn't see the need to apply one because the wood wasn't too porous and/or it didn't have any holes; so I wasn't worried about bubbles. Great question! There are some helpful videos out there on how to estimate the amount of epoxy for a project like this (th-cam.com/video/vbv9RyUHyFg/w-d-xo.html). I was way off on my estimation and wish I had done some calculations. I also didn't do, but may be a good idea, although I didn't have any issues. Good luck with the build!
looks great! i'm working on one right now. so you just poured in the panels all at once and it dries ok? and doesn't leak through the bottom? i have been reading some things where it says to layer it and let dry between layers. and how much epoxy did you end up using? my door is probably similar in size.
LeAnn thank you! Sorry for the late reply. Yep! Just make sure you blow all the air bubbles out. It self levels and dries great! I think I used 3 1/2 gallons, so quite a bit!
Also...how long did it take for the epoxy to finish curing?? And how bad does it smell...I’m going to have to do it inside because my dog makes it too dusty in my garage
It took a while, like 24-48 hours. It has a very strong smell. Try and close off the room you do it in and put a heater/fan on it to speed things up. Just watch for dust.
I am planning on using epoxy to cover an old door to use as a desk top...it’s tile painted...old paint...has an awesome crackle finish that I want to maintain...I have a few questions...I have used epoxy before on a flat surface bare wood and directions said to cover with water based polyurethane first to seal it which I did...it turned out awesome...my questions for doing the door are as follows...the door has old paint...not sure if it’s oil based or water based paint...there is a finish under the paint showing thru the cracks in the paint...do I need to cover with water based poly to seal it before I use the epoxy? Or do I need to sand the paint...without losing the effects of the cracking? Will the epoxy divot where the recessed panels are on the door??or if I get enough will it fill and level? I know my counter I did does have a small low spot where there was a spot sanded out...but that could have been my fault for not putting a thick enough coat of epoxy...hope you can help! By the way your table looks awesome

Your table is amazing. I was inspired to turn one of my 5 panel doors into a table. I only partially sanded off the white paint, leaving the table top looking distressed. That left it with a very interesting look. We finished the epoxy yesterday. Your guidance was perfect, especially since this was our first time working with epoxy. Today I want to build the table base (I do not want a bench). Do you have a material list for the pipe sizes needed to make the table base?

I don't remember the exact lengths of the pipes and I don't own the table! Most of the time for projects like this, I use the standard sizes sold at home depot or other home supply stores. Happy building!

How long are the larger sections of pipe for long horizontal support? Is that 2 of the 24 inch sections tied together?
Yes I believe they are 2 of the 24 inches or I may have found a 48 inch piece, it’s been several years so I can’t remember exactly
