I love this movie! I didn't feel the runtime at all, and can't think of anything I'd cut out. Had so much humor and so much heart. I personally would recommend seeing it in theaters
Minor correction: They shot the majority of the movie in real locations and not sets, as Martin stated. This was a huge undertaking by the production staff who hunted for and found those locations, so I feel it's important they get the credit for their amazing work.
I give it a full price. I actually thought it was the third act that seemed to meander a bit. But it was a wonderful film that I wouldn’t mind rewatching around Christmas time.
While this movie doesn't remind me of any Christmas themed films I've seen before, half way through I realized it did remind me of another film from the era The Holdovers takes place in, and that is 1973s The Last Detail. So many similarities, too many to mention in a comment section. It is the main theme they both share of 3 strangers living in the moment, creating good memories and giving each other hope before going their separate ways, and returning to their problemed lives. While Detail ends on a sad note, Holdovers ambiguous ending seems to explore the choices each character has to enrich their lives and carry on.
Good call on The Last Detail, great Jack Nicholson / Hal Ashby film I only caught last year. Yet they have different sensibilities as well. I'd say Last Detail is a little bit bleaker, more of an angry howl. The Holdovers felt more like 'to know is to love' and that we hurt, and hurt others, when we're alone. It's also pretty damn funny too, even more so than The Last Detail, which I also love. Just saw it here in the UK just over a week ago on the big screen and I can see Holdovers definitely being in my own all time Top 50.
@@PeterEvansPeteTakesPictures , And a month after I posted that comment, I stumbled upon another video with Alexander Payne explaining that The Last Detail was his inspiration for The Holdovers. So its not just my imagination or a coincidence lol. I can't leave the link, I tried but this comment won't go through, look up ..About a Trip Alexander Payne on Hal Ashby’s The Last Detail.
MILD SPOILERS HERE…. Just watched it. It didn’t. Feel long. It’s a solid drama. The kind of movie they made in the 70s that doesn’t have any real shocking turns. Just solid acting, characters you can relate to and kind of an open resolution. Love the intro too. This film even SOUNDS like it was made in the 70s. Solid.
Man I'm missing something because I Loooooooved Elwction and About Schmidt but this one went waaaaaaaay over my head. I appreciated the Aesthetic, editing, acting....like all Aces but I was boooooored. That first hour was weird to have like four characters just up and leave. Why even bother setting them up? I loved the ending but the first act didn't make that last act hit as hard as I wanted. Also Paul Giamattis eye was going CRAZY...
OMG!... he didn't see Snow White, he didn't see this movie... why are they paying him?... what is he doing there?... I know they need white people for diversity... but there are other white people out there who is hungry and needs work god damn it!

I agree, the pacing could've used some tightening, especially in the first half. The content doesn’t quite justify the running time. They could've at least talked faster or something. That said, I really enjoyed it, more than I expected to. The Holdovers legit feels like a Hal Ashby movie, like the sort of back-to-basics, back to his roots sort of thing he would've done were he still alive. There's almost this sort of reverse Harold and Maude dynamic. And the back half with the road trip through late-season New England feels a lot like The Last Detail.
The trailer is bad. I have zero interest to see this film. Based off the trailer, it looks like garbage. So.... either the film _is_ garbage, and everyone here is suffering from " The Emperor's new clothes" syndrome,..... or.... the Trailer does not represent what the movie is. If I could describe the movie in one word I’d say “wholesome”.
Paul Giamatti makes any movie better. Loved the film. It was well cast.

I saw the movie last night. It’s absolutely terrific!!!! Loved it! It’s not long at all. Newsflash: most movies are two hours. Go see it.
They had me at "Paul Giamatti." 😊
I enjoyed this movie it hit every level. Characters were brilliant and Paul knocked it out of the ballpark!!
Can’t wait for this one.. I actually had a speaking part in the Descendants but my scene got cut from the final film!
Was it included as a deleted scene in the special features?
I’m glad we got Martin’s review since he’s the one who made me notice/appreciate Alexander Payne’s greatness
It’s not all sets. I went to the school they shot this at and I recognized a number of interiors. I adore this flick.
