My mama use to wear this one OUT when I was a little girl. We didn't get along that well, but I have to give it to her because she gave me a PRICELESS education in jazz. And when I went off to Howard University in 1975 as a student in their affluent music program at the time, this girl was ready as far as jazz was concerned. Peace mom.

I know all about not getting along with parents. And about finding out later there were things you're glad they passed on to you.
A *mom that's crazy about Cannonball* - that makes me *smile* ;-)
I first heard this wonder of a tune on a radioparadise (dot) com (they're not paying me, I'm paying them, commercial free listener supported, and I'm using this space to shamelessly advertise for them because they're doing a fantastic job of diversified great music...)

Bless you! What a touching tribute to your mother. The USA gave the world the BEST music which we call JAZZ and comes from the BLACKS in America. TREMENDOUS. I would love to see a black film maker do a documentary or movie on JAZZ so the real story can be told!

There's a strong possibility that I'll watch this video every day just to keep my head straight. This is one indestructable groove, presented here direct from the Mother Ship. Wonderful Zawinul was Austrian, and had a grandmother who was syndi -- a gypsy, which is a fabulous tradition to bring to the American Blues, played by the best.

The ironic part is, this was recorded in a studio. The extras were encouraged to do that to make it FEEL like a live recording.

I was a senior in HS when this record was out. Back then, radio played everything, rock & roll, jazz, soul, whatever. This song hit #11 on the charts. Seven months later, the Buckinghams hit #7 with a vocal version. You had Sinatra and Dean Martin both knocking the Beatles out of the #1 spot at various times. Nowadays, radio is so fragmented in their formats.

Heard Cannonball and Nat Adderley with Zawinul at Cornell College in Iowa in the early 1970s. Went to a master class as well as the public concert. I remember them making a big pitch to get into the real jazz tradition, not just pop stuff like Chicago and Blood Sweat and Tears. I was already persuaded. Tremendous privilege to hear the music and wisdom of these great musicians in person.

Love it. Thanks for posting and for pictures.
Another great place to pick up a ringtone.
This was a refreshing slice of peaceful beauty
amidst the harder and more acidic tunes (which i also liked) of the mid/late 60's.
The recording I owned of this tune had the lyric:
"My baby, she's made out of love,
Like one of those bunnies at the playboy club"
    (---an unnecessary "bunny trail")
    Julien Edwin "Cannonball" Adderly.
His brother Nat ("Work Song", lyrics by Oscar Brown)
    played Cornet with this quintet.
    Julien died in '75,
    too young at age 46.
Nat died in 2000 at age 68.
    Sweet music.

Being 1 of 7, my mother entertained us with music. This album, JUG (Gene Ammons) and Keely Smith were played very often, and to this very day, are as fresh to me as ever... over 50 years later. I have the original vinyl (and also CDs). My brother Klaus (of Seattle fame) is one of the best sax players I've ever heard.... no doubt inspired by Cannonball and Gene... Another great song from this particular album is "This Here"... a Bobby Timmons composition...def. worth listening to...still a fan...
