I wish there was a remake period. Or a digital version at least. The combat system, I understand why it can be frustrating but it makes sense to me that it is how it is. A 14 year old girl with a pipe shouldn't feel too agile or dextrous like (extreme example) Kratos or Dante. The gameplay certainly was what turned down most part of the people who didn't like the game but to me it's a masterpiece just how it is.
This game and the SH series both have that feel to me. Maybe it's because it's like they are frozen in this nostalgic liminal state, floating around the storage units of my memories.
Nah it is good as it is. Maybe a remaster but a remake just would not catch the atmosphere of the game, even the bad controls are part of it, would you enjoy a chrono trigger remake for example? I dont think so

It’s almost upsetting to think about how hard it would be to remake the game, but it needs to happen and hope it will. greatest, most unique, and ballsy horror game ever made
I tried when I worked at Atlus/Sega. Everyone there knows that I was obsessed with getting that going. But the people I was working with said the rights were in limbo because the studio disbanded. But looking back I think that's horseshit. Atlus probably has the rights, they just didn't want to make me happy because they knew how important it was for me (toxic work environment, almost got into a fight in the parking lot, co-workers played pranks on me, shit was worse than the show The Office).
The aspect I appreciate the most in this entire soundtrack is how even the most joyous songs like the Airship Theme C leave a sense of melancholy in the air too. Like it's showing you a happy picture but you see dark corners in it. Truly genius.
25:48 If this song would have been on the videogame, I think they would've used it in a scene with Diana, the melody goes perfect with her, I cannot listen to it with another character in mind.
I confess to being really high on dexedrine when I played this game. I hadn't slept for several days in a row and the whole thing was like a crazy fever dream. It was a truly unforgettable experience, but one I wouldn't recommend. I was like the old lady in Requiem for a Dream in those days.
Such a peculiar experience this game was. As an outright lover of dark, mature themes I found plenty to love in Rule of Rose. Yet its gameplay, arguably the most important aspect of *any* video-game, is utterly atrocious. Had it not been for the story characters, graphics and music I would have had quitted it half-way through. To me, it is worth it (some of the story still gives me goosebumps), however, considering how appalling its price is this game is nigh impossible to recommend.
I understand and even agree with your opinion about the gameplay, but to me even that was well done. It's a 14-ish years old girl holding a pipe or whatever else, she's supposed to feel like that, not like Kratos or Dante or etc. But yeah, I'm sure that turned a lot of people away from the game. Still, it's pretty high up in my list of favorites from the PS2 era.
Gameplay is temporary, a story and music lasts. If this game played well but didn't excell expectations otherwise it would be just another "good game". I played a lot of games that had good gameplay, where i didn't have any big complains, but if that's all to them i forget quickly. In fact if i had to tell you why i like all my favourite games no description would start with just good gameplay. Maybe Rule of Rose is not a good game, but it's still an incredible piece of art, don't plan to replay it anytime soon, but i'll never get tired of listening to the music, reading up on the story and generally get my mind into its atmosphere again.
@@convolution223 Definetely work on hitstun, hit detection and some balancing. The games tends to feel really unfair, not because teh combar is hard but because the hitboxes are't aligned with the animations properly, so your attacks that look like they hit missed while the enemy looks like he totally missed while you still get hit. Also some bosses make it really easy to get into a stunlock, where you get hit almost immediately when your hitstun is over, punishing slight positioning errors too harshly. As for the balancing, you probably played the mermaid boss. You are right about the combat being meant to be difficult, but these things come on top of an already limiting combat system and are not proper ways to enhance difficulty.
The Orphanage theme B seems to be meant for players to be uncomfortable and annoyed at the tragic orpahange setting. I mean, it's a jolly tune played in a sunny day in the orphanage, but deep down the players know what has been going on at that point in the game.

I love when they use actual quartetto's and composed music inspired by some classical music in popular content, sometimes, like in K-drama, film and games it works so well.
I really love this soundtrack. One of my favorites in my entire record of games, alongside Bloodborne, Ender Lilies and Silent Hill. Truly masterpieces in my judgment.
